2002 Mock Lotto Preview
*Based on Day 20 standings and best available player rankings*
Will it Yao or Amar'e as the 1st selection in 2002?
1- Houston Rockets- Yao Ming
C 7'6'' 310 22 B C D+ C+ C+ A China
Yao takes the top spot in this mock because face it you just can’t teach height! At 7’6, Yao will be the 2nd tallest in the league and will be an instant shot blocking threat. He also comes with a very polished offensive game for a 22 year old with potential to grow into a star. It’s close but Yao is the more complete player right now than Amar’e. Go Niners could bring Yao home.
Projected rookie stat line- 16 PPG, 9 RPG, 1.7 BPG, 48% FG
2- Atlanta Hawks- Amar’e Stoudamire
PF 6'10'' 245 20 B+ D+ D+ C C A Cypress Creek HS (Fla.)
One of the most powerful scoring big men to come into the draft falls into the lap here on whoever picks #2. Amar’e has elite athletic, jumping and finishing ability at the rim but the rest of his game is still very raw. However, at 20 years old, you can pump enough camps into him to be a budding star by the time he’s 25. Amar’e is just slightly behind Yao in defense and rebounding but should be a top 5 PF with the righ development. Losanglife would elated to take Amar'e here at #2.
Projected rookie stat line- 17.2 PPG, 8 RPG, 1.1 BPG 49.7% FG
3- Phoenix Suns- Caron Butler
SF 6'7'' 228 22 B- C+ C+ C C A UConn
Here’s where the talent dropoff really starts as the divide between Yao/Amar’e and Butler is staggering. Caron can be a nice wing scoring option for a very long time and he’s got decent handle to boot. His defense needs some work but can definitely be a 3rd option on a good team in his prime. Andrew would be welcoming of the former Husky to Phoenix.
Projected rookie stat line- 13.4 PPG, 5 RPG, 1.1 SPG 44.4% FG
4- Indiana Pacers (from Lakers)- Carlos Boozer
PF 6'9'' 258 21 B C- D+ C B B Duke
The former Blue Devils star checks in at No. 4 but this spot certainly isn’t secure for Boozer. While he boasts being one of the strong inside scorers and rebounders in the draft, his achilles heel has always been
his defense. But, Boozer should be at minimum a monster on the glass and be a strong non-option scoring big. I think the original michael could take Booz and be happy.
Projected rookie stat line- 14.7 PPG, 9 RPG, 0.5 BPG 47.1% FG
5- Milwaukeee Bucks- Dimitris Diamantidis
SG 6'5'' 195 22 B- B C+ C C B Greece
The gambles start at No. 5 this year and Dimi seems to be on the top of that list. He’s been a household name in Greece for years hoisting several Greek League championships and MVP awards. He’s a very good outside shooter with a nice inside game as well. Dimi could be groomed to be a very good scorer in this league with the right camps. This is a big draft for chipper and this Greek man could help Sheed and the Bucks.
Projected rookie stat line- 15.2 PPG, 3.3 RPG, 0.9 SPG 45.4% FG
6- Indiana Pacers- Arvydas Macijauskas
SG 6'4'' 215 22 B- B C C D+ B Lithuania
Back to back combo guards should go here as Macijauskas or ‘Jaws’ should be another terror on the offensive end. He’s a former 3 PT champion in the Lithuanian league and has also been an All-Star game MVP. He’s not as strong with the ball in his hands to create like Dimi but should be able to fill up the basket. Pacers will be looking for the best prospect here and Jaws should be it. Another potential backcourt stud for the original michael here to add in Indy.
Projected rookie stat line- 14.1 PPG, 2.3 APG, 0.7 SPG 46.1% FG
7- San Antonio Spurs- Tayshaun Prince
SF 6'9'' 212 22 C B C- B+ C B Kentucky
The pride of Dominguez HS and former Wildcat wing Tayshaun Prince should be the top ‘3 and D’ guy in the draft just ahead of Dunvleavy. Prince can guard almost all position 1-4 and can be developed into a serviceable offensive threat with the right camps (see: Battier, Shane). For the right team, Prince can come in and start right away and could be the case for @ukfanjohn .
Projected rookie stat line- 11.3 PPG, 5.1 RPG, 1.3 SPG 44.3% FG
8- Seattle Super Sonics- Mike Dunleavy Jr.
SF 6'9'' 230 22 C+ B C C+ C A Duke
In this history of BBS, Dunleavy has always projects as a hit or miss prospect. Sometimes he’s been really good and other times he’s just been a decent wing off the bench. It appears Dunleavy has higher scouted potential than Prince which might place him higher on this mock but he’s never been known as a great defender. Dunleavy might be the better scorer against Prince but may need more work to get into a starting line up. Sonics need a lot of depth so 13rock could turn to Mike D here.
Projected rookie stat line- 12.9 PPG, 4.1 APG, 1.2 SPG 45.3% FG
9- Philadelphia 76ers- Jay Williams
PG 6'2'' 195 21 C+ C+ C+ C+ C- A Duke
Two Dukies in a row and three in the lotto! What can you say about Jay Will expect that his well rounded ratings seem to project he’s the biggest risk/reward guy in the class. He’s still one of the legends in Durham so I would have to bet he might be a steal in the top 10. Stevie B might take a gamble here even with Starbury in the backcourt and bank on Jay Will turning into more assets down the road.
Projected rookie stat line- 12.3 PPG, 5.7 APG, 1.3 SPG 42.3% FG
10- NY Knicks (From Bulls)- Luis Scola
PF 6'9'' 240 22 B- B- D+ C C+ B Argentina
The scrappiest player perhaps in the whole draft goes here at #10 and his offensive ratings should support the case. Scola does not do anything particularly well but always been a get the job done type of big and could be a nice complementary piece this late in the draft. Skillz would probably go in a different direction here but Scola would be nice frontcourt depth at least.
Projected rookie stat line- 12.7 PPG, 6.7 RPG, 1.1 SPG 45.7% FG
11- Portland Trail Blazers- Nene Hilario
C 6'11'' 250 20 B- C- D C+ C+ B Brazil
Nene is a bruising big man out of Brazil coming with a nice inside rating and decent defense and rebounding as well. At just 20, Nene has room to grow and come into his own for the right, patient team. He should be a serviceable for a long time but well behind Yao and Boozer for big men in 02’. Orlando Magic Johnson has a couple of bigs on the roster but could look at Nene here as an option.
Projected rookie stat line- 9.1 PPG, 8.1 RPG, 1.3 BPG 47.3% FG
12- Orlando Magic- Chris Wilcox
C 6'10'' 221 20 B- D+ C- C+ C+ B Maryland
Chris Wilcox is a very poor man’s version of Amare Stoudamire with better defense and rebounding at the moment but much less perceived potential and athletic ability. Wilcox was a complete stud for the Terrapins throughout his college career but probably won’t be able to replicate the same results at the BBS level. At minimum, he’ll be a nice big to bring off the bench for some points and rebounds in the paint. Could breakthewalls and footy go in a different direction here? Sure, but Wilcox should be on that short list.
Projected rookie stat line- 12.3 PPG, 6.1 RPG, 1.1 BPG 48.2% FG
13- Boston Celtics (from Hornets)- DaJuan Wagner
SG 6'2'' 200 19 C C+ C+ C D+ A Memphis
Rounding off the lotto is Wagner, who behind Williams is another significant boom or bust type of prospect. Wagner was supposed to be everything that Derrick Rose ended up being in the NBA but injuries and health problems derailed his career. Can Wagner be the steal of the draft at this point? A team like the Celtics and Lasagna and tears of failure could roll the dice here or go need based.
Projected rookie stat line- 13.3 PPG, 3.1 APG, 1.4 SPG 41.6% FG
