Roundtable with the fellas
w/ Steve, Galo, HF, and RC
w/ Steve, Galo, HF, and RC
1. Talk about your offseason. How would you grade it? How was your TC?
Steve - We lost Livi which was expected. Was able to draft Darius Garland at pick 21 and he went +6 and still has +13 left. Excited to see if he can become a player in a season or two. Dealt DC for Russ Westbrook and Burton. Thought that was pretty good value for us. I'll say it's a B+. Doesn't deserve an A, but how can you be mad at that offseason.
Galo - It began about 9 AM this past Saturday morning right after TC and been fighting a migraine most of the morning. The wife and I had to do errands all day in Ventura County, CA and started at AAA. Mike is incessantly messaging about KAT which at that time had no intention of trading. We start talking and going through scenarios that get up to 5 1sts but guts my team plus KAT. I pause and think as we get back on the road and get lunch at Lure Fish House. Got some Charbroiled oysters there and Salmon Burger – highly recommend if you’re in Cali and like seafood. About 2 hours later we end up at CarMax – Mike still wants to know what’s happening. I’m working the market for other deals but the rest of HUE crew is letting me down so it’s just Mike. He finally relents on the Boston pick and says he has to run so I’m like fuck it’s let’s retool and take a chance on getting some more assets including a potential lotto pick so that’s how the KAT deal happened. Shortly afterward, I’m throwing up my guts at CarMax (mixture of chicken and oysters I think) maybe because of the deal too who knows and contemplating FBB retirement as Play rips me a new one on the KAT deal. The next day, I dealt Beasley to get Hayward who’s similar but has higher TOs for his expiring contract and to subtract $21M from my payroll next year plus add a former 1st rounder, sniper uncamped in Shamet.
Overall, C+ per my article. I mean could have I tried to 3-peat? Probably but wouldn’t have fallen short. TC was fine for the most part although we just need bigs at this point and that will be the main focus moving forward.
HF - Off-season was busy for the Wolves, added cousins, turned him into Jokic. Then got oladipo in a deal where we sent our best bud Dwayne over to Denver ( ) we followed that move by moving 2 picks for Biedrins and Bradley. I would give my off-season a B. Could of been executed better but we came out a contender.
TC was shitty as they killed my boy Duncan. We can say Minny does not run on Duncan anymore.
RC - i'm going to give myself B+. Keldon Johnson looks like he will be a stud in the draft, and we used our FA space to grab Norman Powell and then re-sign Oubre to a great deal which we already flipped. Excited to see more of Powell... we'll see if he's the TS% Ninja that I expect he is. Coming to a contender near you soon!!
Editor's Note - Thanks for the dissertation, Galo. My wife works at CarMax.
2. What are your expectations for the upcoming season?
Steve - I think it'll depend on if I can land a really good PG. If we can do that, then we'll win 50 again. If we don't, then I'm not entirely sure since the East is always a pain in the ass. I think we'll have a really fun season and really like our depth. Our last 3 seasons we've had good teams, but just came up short. Hoping I can tinker and get over the hump in the next couple of seasons.
Galo - Playoffs would be nice. If we can shoot our way to the ECF, that would be cool but we don’t have the big talent to win it all. Again, a retool season like in 2010 and we came back in 2011 with a bang.
HF - Championship or bust. No exceptions when we’re not retooling with Giannis.
RC - TANK! I think Mikal and KJ will make it tough for us to be in the bottom 3, but the bottom 5 should be all we need to get one more quality youngster and then compete in our CY next year
3. Which team had the best offseason in your opinion? The worst?
Steve - I'll probably say Mike Sargo. Acquiring Porzingus, and seeing those young guys take another step forward in their development is a scary sight for us all in the East. As far as the worst goes, probably Boston. When you trade all of your good pieces, you need to make sure you have all of your 1sts. Simply astonishing to not get all of those picks back.
Galo - Pacers obviously had a great off-season in getting KP and KAT they’ve done a nice job. I also like what the Bucks have done so far. I still both are a player or two away but they are close to where they need to be. I’m already on record about the Spurs and Warriors so won’t get into them too much but don’t like what ATL and NOH is doing so far.
HF - Best off-season will probably be the Bucks, stealing DLo flipping him for Bismarck after adding Ja Morant. 2 franchise changing players being added in one offseason that’s awesome. Mavs also had a good offseason even though they could of been a lot better. Sargo also made some moves.
Hard to tell with all these shitty voided deals.
RC - In terms of the best offseason, I really have to tip the cap to the Pacers. They brought in two of the unicorn bigs from the real life 2015 draft, KAT and KP, in one offseason, and it looks like they will be very competitive this year. De'Aaron Fox has the goods, and it looks like Lonzo does too. In terms of the worst? Give me the Boston Celtics. They held up the draft multiple times. They flubbed their FA bids by failing to retain Serge Ibaka. Really seems like they dropped the ball in multiple areas.
Editor's Note - Damn, get off Sargo's nuts. I like what Minny has done with the quick re-tool. (Should've never tried tanking last year, yikes.)
4. Alright let’s get serious. Call out one of your fellow round table members on a bad move they made, or their terrible direction, terrible job, etc etc. (Galo, Steve, HF, RC)
Steve - Galo trading away part of his core after winning 2 titles is dumb. Man! Go for the 3-peat!!!! Just wasn't in love with the KAT trade, but obviously that Celtics pick will be a good one.
Galo - I wanted to call out myself but I’m gonna get skewered enough so fuck it, I’ll go RC. I’m hoping you’ve got a good plan buddy because the East isn’t easy. Obviously, that KD deal was bad in hindsight but the moves since then haven’t been great either. Powell getting a big contract was probably warranted but the team is full of wings – basically the Warriors of the East. This team needs bigs badly and would start moving those Knicks before they lose all value to get some. Lastly, I hope you don’t block me because I think you’re a good dude but unblock my guy Steve please? Sure, he can be an asshole but these Philly/NJ guys don’t know any better!
HF -
Galo - wtf was that gift to sargo. Gtfo
Steve- suck on deez nuts should of gave me caracter
Rc- skillz farm team. Wtf dude
RC - Galo, how the fuck did those WC pussies take you to 7 games in the finals last year? You need to be putting that shit away in 6 or less when you have Steph on your team. SMDH. Do better this time around as you search for your three-peat.
Editor's Note - Should've ran it back, Galo.
5. What about me and my team? Let me have it.
Steve - I'm intrigued to see how Fultz sims this season. Wonder if those turnovers will still be a massive issue. Ayton seems like he should be way better. He's camped out and that's what his ratings are? Sheesh. Guess he'll be one of those guys that takes a little bit longer to develop. Isaac had a sneaky nice season, but I wonder if that 3-point shot will ever be respectable enough to be an option...probably not. Need another big for sure. Solid up and coming roster, but certainly need some upgrades at the 2 as well as needing another big.
Galo - Fack you Ryan! Stole Lopez from me a season ago and still won the title with Pecherov as my starting center. I have no idea how your namesake Jon Issac is so good at PF yet he’s at SF right now. Give some minutes to Okafor or hand him over here. Already told you how great it was that you got KPJ – just need to reset now.
HF - Stop bitching about shitty luck. Sounding like my boy JR out here.
You got Fultz. Quit bitching.
RC - fuck man idk what there is to say. when you hit on multiple high draft picks in a row, you put yourself in a position to be very successful this league... and I'm sitting here looking at Ayton, Isaac, Fultz, and KPJ... you haven't really missed on any recent draft picks. The Rozier pick is another example of one that has paid dividends. If you draft that well, it's tough to be in too much of a bind at any point so long as you have your picks.
Editor's Note - Damn most of you are so tame. But like I'm going to sit here and entertain some starchild talking about my luck. Giannis should have 3 titles by now.
6. So JR aka Aubrey aka in his feelings but why are you in your feelings aka No Value Team was recently crowned King of BBS by like three people. What are your thoughts? Agree or disagree? Grade JR’s performance over the recent years.
Steve - He's not my king! lol. But I mean it's whatever. He does post a good bit, produces content, and has won a title which feels like eons ago. I think Habes or Skillz would've been the better choice, but didn't really care all that much about who won. There's a lot of quality fellas and would've been okay with numerous people winning it. Solid idea by Pig.
Galo - Ah my guy JR – what can I say in less words than my response to question 1. This man has moped around the boards for at least 10 seasons now. I think the turning point was when Spence messed up the playoff by mistake when he won instead of losing and the Mavs won the title – that really irked him. I don’t think he’s been the same since. It’s fine to troll and have fun but being passive aggressive can be exhausting. Like bro, there’s no conspiracy against your team and its players values and if there is, so what? Just deal with it and move on. There’s always players that can be dealt and moved. Value isn’t always everything in my opinion because there’s so many different perceptions of it across GMs and some sell better than others. The Drake persona coming back is good and bad at the same time. Bad for the league but good for him. He’s been subpar recently but think he’s finding his swagger again so we’ll see what’s in store when fakes come around.
HF - Maybe the Queen of BBS. He probably complains more than all our wives. Gtfo JR
RC - it seems like JR was a fair choice given the (fairly arbitrary) categories and scoring methods of the competition. "King of BBS" connotes several different things, and it seems quite clear that it doesn't exactly mean 'most skilled GM.' JR is super active and seems to be involved anywhere/everywhere around here. I can totally understand why he won the popularity contest.
Editor's Note - Oh Aubrey.
7. Steph vs Giannis. Steph has the lead currently, but when it’s all said and done, which player has more titles? Will these players every play for another team?
Steve - I'll say Giannis ends up with more only because he's in the West where the path is so much easier to navigate through. However, Steph is a god, and it's crazy that Play couldn't have more success with Steph. Steph will be moved for sure at some point...obviously not now. And same goes for Giannis, too. Just won't be for awhile, and that's okay. I wouldn't trade these cheat codes either.
Galo - Obviously, I’m biased but hope I can get Steph another one or two before he hands them up. Giannis is filthy though – don’t think we have the players to contain him if we matched up. I don’t plan on moving Steph as long as I’m GM but you never know.
HF - Giannis only leaving in free agency. So I’ll give you the answer to that one. Galo probably gonna gift Curry to Mike for 2 first round picks and Lavine.
Giannis came in younger and needs a title in the next 4 years to catch up to Currys pace. Definitely gonna be the GOAT.
RC - Giannis. Steph will have more MVPs, but he only has 2 titles and is already 31 years old. Giannis has one under his belt and is still 25. Wolves look pretty solid right now, I bet they could win another one in next 2-3 seasons. I think both Steph and Giannis end up with a combined ~7.5 titles. I'll attribute 4 of them to Giannis and 3.5 to Steph.
Editor's Note - Not moving, eh? Steph has this.
8. How do you feel about players like Deonte Burton? Where do you think they sit value-wise?
Steve - Well, I just traded for this kid! I think he's certainly solid. The B outside isn't great and so it makes me wonder if he can even replicate those shooting splits of last season. Burton's stock:to ratio is a thing of beauty and he'll be a guy that will resign cheaply one would think. I think he's valuable right now, but prob goes away quickly once he starts making more.
Galo - They are nice stories and really like Spence making these under the hood guys like him and Paccelis so good but it’s also tough to gauge them if that makes sense lol. I mean if he’s gonna make guys like that he should make more like Will Barton (sorry ashes), Jayson Tatum and Gerald Wallace that look amazing on paper but sim like poop. Some consistency would be good but don’t have a problem with guys simming above their ratings.
HF - Burton is a glorified Billy Walker. Maybe a bit more volume but wtf is the difference between those guys??
RC - i think they have under the hood magic that they were blessed with by their lord and creator, Spencer. I LOVE these guys and I value them quite highly. At a certain point, the proof is in the statistical pudding with these guys no matter what the surface ratings say.
Editor's Note - Burton getting about as many minutes as he should get right now. Love it.
9. The recent draft was pretty weak, and looking around the league, very few rookies are slated to get much playing time. With TC behind us, what would be your starting 5 of rookies and why? How do you think their careers will shape up?
Steve - Ehhhhhhhh. I didn't even look at the draft all that much.
PG: Ja Morant...no brainer. He arguably might be the best player of this class when it's all said and done. Zion could be a tricky player in terms of development with respect to his outside shot.
SG: RJ Barrett...i guess. he'll be good, but will he be great? spence been fucking up wings for awhile now.
SF: Zion...no brainer. 100 pot and so the outside shot should develop to respectable levels, but we'll see.
PF: who the f knows
C: who the f knows
Galo - Daniel Gafford, Jaxson Hayes, Zion Williamson, Tyler Herro and Ja Morant would be my five. I think Gafford will be a young stud big – maybe not on Bam’s level but he’ll be sought after. I think the same thing with Hayes too if GAME camps early and right. Zion looks like a better Blake Griffin so far in his career – probably strong as fuck. Herro is a nice sniper type guy and I think Morant will be special if he gets his turnovers down.
HF -
C-Jaxson Hayes - future 3 bpg 10 rpg big.
PF- Zion - hopefully he’s a juiced up ZBO
SF-KEldon Johnson - idk he looks legit looks like PG tho.
SG- Tyler Herro - next Ingles/Bogie/GOAT dude is a stud
PG- ja Morant - B+ inside as a rookie he looks goated. I can see him being similar to DROSE
RC -
PG-Ja. TO issues are brutal but he has the potential to overcome. also could be an awesome SG i bet.
SG-Tyler Herro. Sorry RJ. Herro looks like he has big time potential, and daddy wants a bucket.
SF-Keldon Johnson--KJ already looking like a potential two-way stud after 1 TC. i am so proud of him.
PF-Zion-all around best, offensive and rebounding machine.
C-Jaxson Hayes-great stocks. total stud.
Editor's Note - Herro sucks PP.
10. Will LeBron ever win a title? What team should consider grabbing him for a strong run?
Steve - Prob not, but what are you talking about? Royal just snagged Roy...he's going to try his darnest to deliver Bron a title!
Galo - It’s possible but depends where he lands. I don’t think he can do it in Denver as it stands now. Some good landing spots would be NY, Memphis, Indiana or Chicago but not sure if any of those teams would do it. Lavine to Denver for Bron just makes a lot of sense for both so we’ll see.
HF - Unfortunately it doesn’t look like it. Send him to Minny to have Giannis carry him.
On the real though the Pacers could use him. Maybe the clippers.
RC - no, he will not. I think he makes sense for anyone who can match the contract, but he's going to be the 2nd or 3rd banana on a title contender at this point i suspect. his prime days are behind him
11. Of the last of the real players in the upcoming few drafts, who are you most looking forward to and what would you trade for them?
Steve - Lamelo would be pretty damn fun. I don't care about giving up the house to get him, but I'd talk about any of my young guys to help facilitate a deal.
Galo - There’s a bunch of guys in 2020 class that look interesting to me so won’t tip my hand but they are bigs and wings. And, hopefully will get one.
HF - LaMelo hopefully will be a fun player. Definitely looking forward To him, I would deal Bradley and Dipo for him idk. Not Giannis.
RC - I think Anthony Edwards is fucking hilarious and really cool. Because hes in this upcoming draft and I will be in my CY, i'm not sure if i would trade much to get him tbh. If he is there when i am picking, I would be thrilled to get him.
12. Would you rather be beaten up every week by a guy named Chet or beat up a defenseless baby once?
Steve - Um.
Galo - As a father, I’d prefer the latter because there’s those days man. But Chet seems like a he might have an issue. Is he 7’1 195 from Minnesota? If so, I’d like him on my team after he whups my ass.
HF - I’ve been watching UFC I’ll kick Chet’s ass
RC - fantastic question. i have actually heard this one before--the baby's name is Chet. you beat it up once, then you don't have to worry about him beating you up in the future. So you can kill 2 defenseless babies with one stone by taking option 2.
Editor's Note - That baby is catching these hands.
Galo - It began about 9 AM this past Saturday morning right after TC and been fighting a migraine most of the morning. The wife and I had to do errands all day in Ventura County, CA and started at AAA. Mike is incessantly messaging about KAT which at that time had no intention of trading.
