2002 BBS Mock Draft
1. Houston Rockets – Yao Ming C 7'6'' 310 22 B C D+ C+ C+ A
The consensus #1 Pick. Yao Ming is going to be a superstar and one of the best big men in the league for years to come. This is what the Rockets have been working towards for two seasons, and they desperately need the lotto gods to be kind to them, because after Yao, this draft is a crapshoot of maybes and role-players. Yao can't jump to say his life, so you know his scoring is good. He is going to be a high % FT big man as well, which is so valuable when you're getting hacked down in the paint. He should block shots and become a 10+ RPG guy as well. Easiest draft choice to date, Yao will instantly boost the Rockets from miserable danger, to pretty okay.
2. Philadelphia 76ers – Amar'e Stoudemire PF 6'10'' 245 20 B+ D+ D+ C C A
I'm not sold on Amare but Spencer is hyping him up like crazy. Spencer likes to troll occasionally though, so who knows? 76ers need a lot of help so it makes sense to take Amare and hope he's loaded with potential. His jumping is probably through the roof, so it'll be very crucial to see how his scoring really is. I imagine he needs to be +8 Inside Scoring instantly, so hopefully Steve is on top of that. His defense and rebounding being a concern is scary, but I feel like he'll block some shots too, so it might not be the end of the world. Either way, I think Amare is very boom or bust, and his first few TCs plus camps will probably determine his career.
3. Indiana Pacers – Carlos Boozer PF 6'9'' 258 21 B C- D+ C B B
I like Boozer here a lot. He's not going to be a defensive big at all, but he probably has the best inside scoring in the draft. His notes paint him as a day one starter with good scoring and rebounding. He is a strong big man, which is also nice. With camps and a good TC, we could see Boozer as a A- C- D+ C A- guy in the future, which is pretty interesting. The Pacers are in a really good spot here because their wings are set, now they just need a big or PG, and since PGs this draft suck, easy choice at #3. Boozer should have a pretty solid jump shot, so maybe he works okay in an outside focus? Might have to switch up to balanced, but either way it's a problem you don't mind having when you get a talented scorer.
4. Atlanta Hawks – Caron Butler SF 6'7'' 228 22 B- C+ C+ C C A
Hawks need a lot of help and I'm not sure any of the players left really do that. I think they go for the relatively safer youth pick here, and take Butler. He should be a very similar scorer to Stephen Jackson, so the Hawks should be pretty set there. I could maybe see the Hawks taking Nene here depending on what they think of Dally, but I think value-wise Butler is the pick. Either way, the Hawks have their work cut out for them and this really isn't the draft to bank on turning things around.
5. Milwaukee Bucks – Mike Dunleavy SF 6'9'' 230 22 C+ B C C+ C A
Chipper should just go with the Warrior factor and take Dunleavy here. It's probably a little high for Dunleavy, but sometimes you have to take chances. Bucks had a pretty poor draft last season, so hopefully Dunleavy is Spencer's secret love and comes with nice potential. The scouting on him should mean he is a solid scorer who won't turn the ball over. However, it also infers he probably won't create a lot of turnovers, but you can't win them all. Good luck, Chipper!
6. Phoenix Suns – Nene Hilario C 6'11'' 250 20 B- C- D C+ C+ B
I think pairing Gasol with Nene is the play here. Suns could definitely use a scorer so I could see them taking one of the Euros here, but passing up on a sure-fire stocks/rebounding big man is too hard to do, at least for me. I think Nene/Gasol will be a really good frontcourt for the Suns and gives them plenty of time to continue building a squad. Nene seems like not only a safe pick, but one that has big upside to be a great pick down the line. This is also the point in the draft where teams can just go anywhere with their picks, so it'll be very interesting from here on out.
7. Indiana Pacers (from Los Angeles Lakers) – Dimitris Diamantidis SG 6'5'' 195 B- B C+ C C B
Grab a scorer, camp him up and succeed. Maggette isn't in the plans for Sargo, so I think Diamond fits right in with Carter/Lewis. He looks like he could easily become a better Bodiroga-type guy, and that's pretty good. Like many of these flawed scoring types, he won't be a defender but I don't think you can pass up on a guy who might come in and score 16-20 his rookie season. Definitely a camp-reliant player, and I know Sargo will be a GM that pumps him up. Good spot to be in for the Pacers in this draft.
8. Seattle Supersonics – Arvydas Macijauskas SG 6'4'' 215 22 B- B C C D+ B
Samesies. Just a slightly worse version of Diamond, Seattle needs a lot of help and they should probably grab a guy that will make an impact early. Arvydas Macijajdksjfejasksvich will be that guy with some camps, and could have solid trade value as well, if the Sonics choose to go that route. I don't think any of the guys left on the board will do as much for Seattle value-wise, so this is the safest pick for them. I'd definitely try to move this pick/fluff him up then trade him. Not sure Seattle will do either though.
9. New Orleans Hornets (from Minnesota Timberwolves) – Tayshaun Prince SF 6'9'' 212 22 C B C- B+ C B
Prince might be what AK was supposed to be. Maybe not to the high extent that AK should've produced, but still going to be a good value defender at the 3. The Battier comparison is here, but Battier is kind of ass right now, and I think Prince should come in getting more blocks, which is huge. Prince will need camping, which worries me since Pig isn't a big time poster or article writer anymore, but either way I think Prince is good value here and could be a useful piece for New Orleans, or a juicy trade bait for an active contender.
10. Orlando Magic – Luis Scola PF 6'9'' 240 22 B- B- D+ C C+ B
Scola seems like he is going to be a pretty solid scorer, and he should fit in pretty well with Walker. I don't think he is going to be a big upside guy, but he should develop into a solid-scoring 4th starter who won't turn the ball over. Worst case scenario, you have a solid back-up at the 3/4 who can rebound and score. Not too bad. I think the Magic might be better off trading this pick for value, or possibly trying to move up in the draft. But if I'm Orlando, I'm trying to get another piece that's more ready to contribute.
11. Portland Trailblazers - Jay Williams PG 6'2'' 195 21 C+ C+ C+ C+ C- A
I think Dan's team is in a really good place, so he can afford to chance Jay Williams. PG is arguable the only position of need for the Trailblazers, and they aren't quite ready to compete next year. I actually kind of like Williams' notes, something about them just scream potential to me, and we know how FBB can treat high potential PGs in Training Camp. I think if anyone in the lotto can afford to gamble on Jay, it's the Blazers, so I think Williams goes to Portland with the #11 selection.
12. Milwaukee Bucks (from New Orleans Hornets) – Udonis Haslem PF 6'8'' 235 22 C+ C C- B- B B
Bucks need a PF and they take the best PF left on the board. Haslem doesn't seem like much to me, to be honest, but really no one left is. He'll be a solid rotation guy probably, and could develop into a nice rebounding big man. With a little camp love, he could be a decent scorer, so probably a double-double guy in the future. Not the best you could hope for, but at #12 in a weak draft, it's probably the right move here. I don't think the Bucks can afford to gamble too much with boom/bust type players, so I think playing it a little safer here isn't bad. Could try to get value in moving this pick, but I don't know how much the market will give at this point in the draft.
13. New York Knicks (from Chicago Bulls) – Ronald “Flip” Murray SG 6'4'' 190 B- C+ B- C D+ B
I could see Skillz taking a plethora of guys here at 13. Guys like Vujanic and Rush could easily go here as well, given the direction the Knicks are going with their offense, but Flip's notes place him as a 6th-man scorer. The Knicks could really benefit from an option guy off the bench at the 1/2, and I know Skillz will either camp him up and get him there, or fluff him up and get good value out of him in a trade. I think Murray is a real solid pick here, but the Knicks could really go a lot of different directions here. I don't see them taking a potential guy and waiting on him, doesn't seem like Skillz's MO.
14. Washington Wizards – Drew Gooden PF 6'10'' 250 21 B- C D C C+ B
Drew Gooden is the jahallstar of the NBA. I don't know what it is, but I just really feel deep in my bones that jah takes Gooden here. Stromile is poop and I guess you could make the argument that PF is the only position jah needs to worry about. Gooden is likely the best big left, and should have a solid inside-outside game that could pair well with Peja, Redd, and Terry. Not a whole lot left here to be excited about, but I think jah gets a little bit excited about Gooden. I don't know why.
15. San Antonio Spurs (from Detroit Pistons) – Nenad Kristic C 7'0'' 240 19 B- C- D+ C C B
Spurs need a PG, but newsflash, there are none. They could use another Center to groom and maybe use Blount off the bench, I don't know. Kristic isn't very exciting, but he's young and his notes almost make it seem like he has some upside. I think the Spurs can afford to start developing a young Center to potentially pair with Randolph down the line. Could see them go with Vujanic here and hope he is a potential Crawford-type guy, but that's a stretch.
16. New Orleans Hornets (from San Antonio Spurs) – Dajuan Wagner SG 6'2'' 200 19 C C+ C+ C D+ A
Pig reset his contract year last season and isn't winning any time soon. I think grabbing a very young, high potential guy is the way to go. There's no one left on the board that does anything for the Hornets or has any type of crazy value. Wagner's notes label him as a scorer, so maybe he is a low jumping player with solid inside scoring already. Pig likes to gamble, so I think the gamble here is the right play for his squad. Could be a nice player with a few good TCs.
17. Toronto Raptors – Matt Barnes SF 6'7'' 226 22 C+ C+ C- B C B
Trusting the Warriors hype seems like the only good move here for game. Barnes has solid notes that label him as a potential 5th starter, so that's pretty decent here at 17. With some camps and TC love, Barnes could be B B C- A- C type guy, maybe like a less athletic Eddie Jones? Not exactly the most exciting thing, but in the mid round of this draft with what's left, Barnes is a pretty good fit for Toronto. I can't see them gambling to find a shot-blocker here, but maybe Salamons could go here. I think if you're debating between Barnes and Salmons, might as well trust the Warrior connection and go with Barnes.
18. New Orleans Hornets (from Dallas Mavericks) – Milos Vujanic PG 6'3'' 187 22 C+ B+ C C D+ C
Vujanic probably ends up going earlier than this, but if not, Pig should snatch him up and look for a trading partner. I'm not sure New Orleans is the fit for Vujanic, since he probably needs to go to a "just +24 him and he's a stud" type GM, but there's decent value here for New Orleans. They probably take him here, see how his first TC and Preseason go. If he has a good Preseason, maybe keep him and try to groom him into a starter. If not, trade him to kobe or something and get value.
19. Los Angeles Lakers (from New York Knicks) – D.J. Mbenga C 7'0'' 255 22 C+ F+ D- B C+ C
I feel like Nanz takes Mbenga or Rush here, you know, that Lakers chub. Mbenga has look of a possible shot-blocker, so I think it's a decent idea to take a chance on him here. Nanz can't afford to pick a young guy that needs time to develop, so I think you take Mbenga here and hope he can contribute right away with some defense. Not else here makes too much sense other than Rush/Salmons, but shot-blocking is paramount, and maybe Mbenga is that guy.
20. Golden State Warriors – Kareem Rush SG 6'6'' 215 22 C B+ D+ C D+ B
Warriors snag the best shooter left. Easy choice. Surround Dirk and Billups with shooters and let it fly! They have no need for Evans since they already have a rebounder in Murphy, who can also shoot outside. At this point in the draft, no one is good, so grabbing a B+ outside guy with non C- and lower Defense is probably the only move.
21. Orlando Magic (from Cleveland Cavaliers) – Reggie Evans PF 6'8'' 245 22 C+ D+ D C B+ B
Evans is going to be a really good rebounding big man, so I think he provides some use, which is pretty much all you can ask for at this point in the draft. The Magic already have a good shot-blocking big with Griffin and some scorers with Walker and Johnson. Pair up Scola and Evans to provide some depth at the 4. Why not?
22. Portland Trailblazers (from Memphis Grizzlies) – John Salmons SF 6'7'' 210 23 B- B- C+ C C B
Trailblazers have an easy pick here at 22 if they can pick up Salmons. They don't have a lot of wing scoring right now, but I think you bring in a guy like Salmons who can potentially back-up the 1/2/3 and that's pretty solid. Salmons fits with the offensive mold of the Blazers, and I could see him being a good B B C+ scorer that produces a lot off the bench. Very possible Salmons is off the board at this point in the draft, but I think there is a decent shot he falls to the Blazers here at 22.
23. New York Knicks (from Boston Celtics) – Jiri Welsch SG 6'7'' 208 22 C B C+ C D+ B
Same mold as Crawford, so why not? He's not a PG, but Welsch could be solid with some camps. At this point, you take what you can get, and Welsch to the Knicks here makes sense. Skillz is probably hoping a guy like Rush falls to him here, but I think Welsch is more likely. I don't expect anything more than a back-up at this point in the draft, so take a chance on shooting development and snag a potential decent rotation guy here at 23.
24. Sacramento Kings – Dan Gadzuric C 6'11'' 240 24 C+ D D B- B- C
Gadzuric is a known NBA2K savant for me, so I'd probably grab him here if he falls to 24. Kings need shot-blocking and maybe Gadzuric can block shots. Only real reason I would take him here. He has the same mold as the other 58 mediocre 2nd string and 3rd string big men in the league, so I'd just be hoping I could make him an okay Tony Battie-like guy. I might go Wilcox here, not too sure.
25. Minnesota Timberwolves (from Denver Nuggets) – Chris Wilcox C 6'10'' 221 20 B- D+ C- C+ C+ B
I think Wilcox is the last guy left that had notes, and his notes are pretty subpar. He is marked as a late 1st Round Pick, so he ends up going where he should. Being called a raw atheltic big men leads me to believe his scoring is probably nothing special, but maybe there's a chance he can block some shots. He might have decent potential to develop into a good back-up 4/5, so probably the safest pick at this point late in the first round. If you could call it safe.
26. Los Angeles Clippers (from Utah Jazz) – Qyntel Woods SF 6'8'' 221 21 C+ C+ C- C+ C A
Clippers should just grab the best A potential guy here. Woods has a good make-up for a SF if his potential is anything remotely close to A, so why not grab him and let him develop for a few years in TC and with some camps. When you have Duncan you can pretty much take a chance on anyone and it won't matter because your still going to be in the playoffs fighting for a title. Could be a nice steal here for LAC if he develops in the next 3-4 years.
27. Houston Rockets (from Miami Heat) – Devin Brown SG 6'5'' 220 24 C B C B- C B
Devin Brown, the guy who made T-Mac's 13 in 33 game possible. Rockets take him here for that sentiment alone. Nah Brown is a solid rotation guy who can shoot a bit and plays more defense than most players in this draft. There are no right picks left here and there are really no wrong picks, hell Rockets could take Boki Nachbar here, it wouldn't matter. Grab the guy who might be an okay 8-12 minute guy.
28. Sacramento Kings (from Los Angeles Clippers) – Nikoloz Tskitishvili PF 7'0'' 225 19 C+ C+ D+ C C A
Potential pick, just like last season's Kedrick Brown. Probably sucks at scoring, sucks at defense, and can't rebound. Will likely move to SF and bust in TC, but hey, take a chance on young potential. With a bunch of work, he could maybe get to B B scoring? Maybe? I don't know, someone probably takes him a little higher, but I'd be happy with Shittyvili or Woods here, and I feel like one of them falls here.
29. Los Angeles Lakers (from New Jersey Nets) – Jared Jeffries PF 6'11'' 230 21 B- C C- C C B
Best case: Mark Blount? Sure, why not.
Side Note: I hate that I couldn't get the pictures from the same place.
