02’ All-Underrated Team - *Stats as of Day 80
The Super stars and elite rookies usually get the shine in BBS but a lot of the guys on this list put up large numbers and don’t get the same attention. Many of them are very effective, on very small contracts and on some of the best teams in the league – let’s take a look.
1st Team
C- Shawn Bradley | Dallas Mavericks
Line- 6.2 PPG, 8.5 RPG, 3.0 BPG, 1.0 SPG, 48% FG
Breakdown- Bradley is quietly having another stellar season this year in Toronto after spending most of last year in Denver. Bradley’s size and length obviously makes him special but he’s also shooting almost 50% from the field and nearly 9 boards a game. If Ray Allen does not get hurt, Toronto would still be in contention at the top of the East. GAME has to be pleased with the production from his big man down low and not to mention his team friendly contracts.
PF- Jerome Moiso | Chicago Bulls
Line- 20.2 PPG, 9.1 RPG, 2.8 APG, 1.0 SPG, 1.4 BPG, 44% FG
Breakdown- This was another fantastic Play /insane pick in the creation draft in getting the big man from UCLA. Moiso has blossomed in his second season in Chicago and carrying the Bulls back into playoff contention while their star wing Michael Finley has been injured. Moiso combines a strong inside game with a complementary defense which supports his strong numbers this season.
SF- Stephen Jackson | Atlanta Hawks
Line- 20.4 PPG, 5.4 APG, 2.1 APG, 1.2 SPG, 47% FG
Breakdown- Jackson has been one of the bright spots for the Atlanta Hawks this season while averaging over 20 points a game. Losanglife took Jackson and combined him with guard Steve Francis for a young and exciting scoring tandem. This team needs some more talent in the front court and more depth but Jackson has proven to be a strong 2nd/3rd scorer already in the league and only 23 years old.
SG- Jalen Rose | Denver Nuggets
Line- 23.8 PPG, 6.4 RPG, 5.0 APG, 1.2 SPG, 46% FG
Breakdown- This former Wolverine was dealt around mid-season to Denver after being a #1 option in Memphis for the last season and a half. Rose has not slowed down since as he’s up to almost 24 PPG and been a very nice side kick for Shaq to carry the scoring load for the Nuggets. Royal has to be happy about the job Rose is doing in his backcourt.
PG- Mike Bibby | Boston Celtics
Line- 18.5 PPG, 4.6 RPG, 8.7 APG, 1.8 SPG, 47% FG
Breakdown- Lasagna and tears of failure has one of the best hidden gems in the league in point guard Mike Bibby, who has been the low key piece running the Celtics. Everyone seems to focus on Allen Iverson and Rasheed Wallace as the superstars of this team but Bibby has been very effective in his own right the whole season and has the Celtics looking primed to make a run in the post-season.
2nd Team
C- Eddy Curry | Portland Trail Blazers
Line- 18.9 PPG, 7.8 RPG, 0.5 BPG, 46% FG
Breakdown- After being plucked as a top 10 pick in last year’s draft, Eddy Curry has defied the critics with a very promising 1st season in Portland. Orlando Magic Johnson took the former high schooler and has seen him lead the team in scoring ahead of guard Rip Hamilton. Good things should be ahead for Curry and the Blazers as they continue to grow.
PF- Tony Massenberg | NY Knicks
Line- 11.7 PPG, 8.3 RPG, 1.4 BPG, 46% FG
Breakdown- Skillz got a nice under the table free agent steal in big man Tony Massenberg who has continued to excel in NY. After playing ahead of Moiso in Chicago last season, Massenberg has led a young and unproven NYK frontcourt to another successful season in the East. Tony’s game meshes nicely with franchise cornerstone Jamal Crawford.
SF- Mike Miller | New Jersey Nets
Line- 14.4 PPG, 4.4 RPG, 2.5 APG, 50% FG, 46% 3PT
Breakdown- After acquiring Miller from Dallas, he has been a very good sharpshooter for NJ and filled the void after the loss of Glen Rice. For the Nets, Miller is making almost half of all his 3PT attempts and 50% of all his other field goals. He’s been the model of efficiency for greeme ’s club as they are the currently the top favorite in the East.
SG- Courtney Alexander | Chicago Bulls
Line- 16.4 PPG, 4.4 RPG, 3.1 APG, 1.1 SPG, 41%
Breakdown- Another play/insane favorite is young Courtney Alexander, who is being groomed to a an elite 2-guard in the league. With B/B inside/outside scoring, Alexander is scoring just under 17 ppg and a steal a game plus is only 24 years old with some upside left in him. He could be a nice guard to continue building in Chicago.
PG- Tim Hardaway | Toronto Raptors
Line- 14.6 PPG, 4.2 RPG, 9.4 APG, 1.4 SPG, 44% FG
Breakdown- The second Raptor on the underrated teams is the veteran point guard Hardaway who has helped the Raptors tremendously this year. His playmaking abilities have helped carry Toronto while Allen has been down and excelled under game’s offense. For the mid-level exception, Hardaway has been an excellent addition in the 6 this season.
Honorable Mention Team
C- Jim McIlvaine | Seattle Super Sonics
PF- Christian Laettner | Miami Heat
SF- Corliss Williamson | Los Angeles Clippers
SG- James Posey | NY Knicks
PG- Nick Van Exel | Detroit Pistons
