Some of us have been tanking the first few years in BBS and need something to really look forward to. That something is none other than the 2003 offseason. All players outside of the first 15 selected in the first round of the creation draft will potentially be available in Free Agency. Teams with no hope and even some of those that do have hope will be slinging maxes at any warm body who will entertain their offer. It’s going to be a truly wild ride. With that in mind let’s take a look and see who are the most valuable members of the potential FA class of 2003. This analysis will look at current player stats and age to determine who will be the biggest potential catches. In no particular order:
Jermaine O’Neal: No doubt the Mavs GM talking JO up was a contributing factor to him being on the list, but he’s a good player! JO has put up 18/10 while showing that he can block and steal and did so as a non-option for the majority of the year! His percentages weren’t particularly great and his mid-range looks to be his biggest weakness, but his explosive first TC, A potential and age of 23 mean that he is an easy max and one of the most desirable potential FA’s
Jamal Crawford: What hasn’t been said about him that I didn’t already cover last night? Volume scoring, nice %, low TO’s. He’s a dream PG and he’s only 21! Skillz would probably offer him a 10 year max if he could. Come with only godfather trade offers or contract negotiations.
Kenyon Martin: Don’t mean to single out another one of Skillz players, but lets be honest with ourselves - he will be gone by 03 FA. Kenyon hasn’t really shown much in his sophomore campaign, averaging only 9 points and 8 rebounds per game. However, he didn’t see the floor as much as he probably should have. He appears to be a solid stocks guy. His % were, let’s be honest, downright awful, but some GM on the brink of the CY(me) who might be starved for a big man(not me) is more than liable to throw a max at this guy. It would be good timing as he would come off the deal in his early 30’s and hopefully an early retirement.
Rashard Lewis: Indiana has a nice piece in Shard who finished the season with awesome splits and he can also play some solid defense. Shard managed to finish the season with 22 PPG despite never being a top option in a DC. His only problem is his TO’s which I would expect to decrease going forward as he undoubtedly improves in TC. At 22 with the shiny A potential rating, he is an obvious target for anyone in FA.
Antoine Walker: A pleasant surprise to be included on this list! I can’t remember him ever simming as close to as well as he is in this iteration of BBS. Toine went for 27 and 9 this year while also contributing some solid STOCKS and his TO’s were down nicely year over year. At 25 he is on the “older side” for this list, but like Kenyon he will be coming off a 6 year max in his early 30’s and the decision to not re-up with another max should most likely be relatively easy. Whoever ends up with Walker will end up with his best production years at a reasonable price.
Antawn Jamison: Jamison very quietly had a nice season in philly as they 6ers tanked their way to the second projected draft pick. Nice job! Antawn was good for 27 and 8 a game. Although his TO’s are less than desirable and his % were also nothing to write home about, he would certainly receive a max in FA. Hopefully that B scouted potential means that Jamison still has something left in the tank because he could develop into an elite player. Time will tell!
Stephon Marbury/Steven Francis: I am lumping these two together because they are essentially the same player right now. Intriguing young PG’s with decent scoring ratings, OK PPG and %, not so great defensive ratings, and terrible TO problems. Usually not the best recipe for a max contract! However, they have two things going for them. They are young and should improve considerably in TC and they play the most important position (arguably) in FBB. A team who is in trouble with the CY or a team desperate for a PG will eagerly throw a max at either of these guys. Hopefully they have some time in their future to write an article to +5 their handles as well.
Ben Wallace/Marcus Camby: These two are also the same player and are most likely edge cases in this analysis. Both will be 28 going on 29 when FA rolls around, but they are both elite rebounders and defenders with little to no offensive prowess. However, I could see a few GM’s sending these guys maxes to anchor their defense if only for a year or two before shipping them off for expirings or something along those lines. 6 year contracts for these two will most likely not age all that well, but they could both have something to offer in their mid 30’s just not for $18 million a year.
Chris Webber: Mr. Webber has been somewhat maligned in this version of BBS, but he is a good player. Some GM’s would argue that he is a “system player” and is therefore being underutilized. If that’s the case then watch out for when he is put into a system that matches his game. Chris was good for 24/13 and was a 3+ STOCKS guy. Sure his TO’s are a bit concerning, but that can be fixed! Maybe! Another guy who could use a +5 to his handles and most likely a candidate for the full max
Alonzo Mourning: One of the best players in the league. Someone is gonna do it and we all know it. He’s just too good and someone will be too desperate. Interested to see who ends up eating this contract.
Allan Houston: See Alonzo Mourning
Valuable players who just missed the list do to either age/ production/ perceived potential, but will probably get maxes, just not the full 6 years. Or maybe they will! I am often wrong. No hard feelings:
Jason Kidd
Deke
KVH
Allan Houston
Rasheed Wallace
Ricky Davis
Michael Finley
Bo Outlaw
PJ Brown
Richard Hamilton
Ron Artest???
Corey Maggette
Chauncey Billups
Feel free to let me know who I missed as I know you will anyway!
