Macs are overpriced.
I love my wifes old SurfacePro + (it plays the old version of OOTP for online fun)
But for what you listed, Habes is right, all you need is a chromebook

thats just a dif processer vs intel right? yeah. When you narrow down your choices, we can talk processors should you go with a non mac. The answer isn't just MAD vs Intel one is better. It varies by price point.

It's not a "true" laptop

you can basically do everything on chromebook that you can on windows. just takes some figuring out

probably not. It has more than enough resources, but it's running android which is linux. You can put an emulator on it or wine(this is not something that is supported mind you), but older programs usually have issues with them as they tend to use C libraries that talk directly to the GPU etc.

well i assume it doesnt come with any sort of Microsoft stuff.- word ect. but no reason i cant use google docs / a cloud version i suppose. any other drawbacks there is an office app in the play store, so as long as you have the MS subscription, you should be able to use office. there is even a way to install Rstudio so you could run the script. As Kobe said, newer stuff there is a way to get around the limitations, but if you are willing to spend some time, you can get most stuff to work. like everything, the faster the processor and the more ram, the smother your experience will be. They dont have a lot of internal storage, but get a usb 3.0 thumb drive for stuff that you would save to a normal HD

acer swift 3 a good 'cheap' option instead of chromebook? acer tends to be good quality, and for the most part all the ones I just looked at have decent specs. There were two with a 1.1 GHz processor that I myself would spend the little bit more to get to the 2.4GHz ones.
