Welcome to the first 2002 installment of Back to the Future Roundtable: Part I! I am your host, Johnny B Good Stamos and today we are joined by Game,Jeb , Covid and Kobe! As ALWAYS, Part I focuses on the upcoming season, and given the craziness of so many teams trying to reset their CY and what seemed to be a pretty crappy TC all around, this year is shaping up to be a good one!!
YOU KNOW WHAT WE SAY AROUND HERE! SAY IT WITH ME! BBS is a big part of our pasts and thanks to big Spence, now our futures! LETS GET TO IT!
1. After the top two in this year’s draft, after that who do you think was the biggest reach and best value pick of the draft?
Covid:The best value pick for me was probably the best player in the class Dimitry. The man is nothing short of amazing already as a rookie, and will be a force for a very long time. The pick that was a reach for me was Boozer. People won't agree with it, but a decent scoring big is very easy to come across in this league. These type of bigs get buckets, but with out the defense it tough to compete with.
Game:The best value was definitely Dimitris Diamantidis did anyone not believe he’s be a stud !!!The biggest reach was definitely my boy Juan !!!He was looking super raw and George didn’t like my pick but hey I like Juan aka Dejuan Wagner for those that don’t know which Juan I’m talking about.
Jeb:Best value is obvious after TC and Preseason: Dimitris Diamantidis is a monster and will be a problem for years, also a problem on Def but when you have 3 RC's and two AC's to sink into his def i think he'll be passable at worst there for a long long time.
Kobe: Best pick of the draft was Dimitris I would have taken him #2 without a doubt over Amare. Prince was a big reach at the time but he looks pretty nice. It's hard to call any of the picks a reach since the draft was pretty bad. Some guys just had more luck in TC than others.
2. It seems people around the league had bad TC’s all around. How did you feel about yours? Who was the bright spot of your team and who stunk the bed?
Covid:Yeah, TCs weren't great at all, Raef looks amzing for me however. Great third option and rebounder and his Stocks look cute. As far as stunk the bed, I wouldn't say anyone, however I did expect Jay to do a little more.
Game:My TC was very solid most my young guys went +2 or +1.My favorite was of course Jason Richardson B B+ scoring at 20 is good. The worse one was El Nene going +0 like nothing he is the same.
Jeb:Pretty quiet TC all around thats for sure. Best TC on roster was probably Q-Rich who bumped up his handles and his outside shooting. no major drops for us aside from the fact according to Pre-Season stack dosnt like holding on to the ball.
Kobe: I also had a bad TC besides Ricky and Zo. They are all I really have to be excited about at this point. Everyone else stayed the same or went down sadly. ACs will fix them but that's annoying
3. We got a little pre-season action today… YUM! Was there anyone that on your team that stood out the most? Someone who outperformed your expectations…?
Covid: Once again I'm goin to go back to Raef, he absolutely crushed all expectations, but than again I don't pay too much mind to Pre, I basically just use it as a tool for trades, nothing more as far as team performances. DC's play a huge role.
Game:I newer though Jason Richardson would be so efficient.
Jason Richardson SG 15 30.8 18.9 3.7 2.7 1.7 0.1 1.4 .502 .905 .52
He be looking like a snack !!!
Jeb:I was pretty happy/surprised to see the rate that Gooden was rebounding at as well as his 1.3 SPG. thought that that was definitely a bit of a fluke but if i can get a steal per out of a big guy i'm more than happy.
Kobe: Bad CPU DC so not much to talk about for my team in preseason. Everyone kinda sucked.
4. Going into this season, there are a lot of teams trying to reset their CY (Suns, Blazers, Magic, Lakers, etc), who do you think has the best chance at doing so?
Covid: Lakers hands down should finally cross the playoff milestone, I honestly thought they would do it last season, but things didn't work out. Sadly, I should be going with Kobe Bryant's team, but I don't think the pair of GMs, are doing a great job getting him the pieces around him. Seems theyre still trying to stay relatively young, while competing. Thats tough.
Game:I think you aka the lakers because it seems Brand has fixed his To issues and Agent 0 can get buckets and that should be enough.Plus their gm is a likable guy and fbb likes those kind of dudes.
Jeb:of this crew I definitely think that the Lakers have the best shot of it this year, his team rounded into a form and even though AK47 didn't really emerge in TC he's a part of a better roster. Gil playing the 2 I think is in the best interests of the team long term but that also creates a problem because Hughes is also a SG and I dont think would work at SF or at PG well. For my own good I hope its not the lakers or the blazers
Kobe: Suns need to make a few moves not sure if they will wait until next season to do so or not. Looks like they will stay pat for another season so don't see them resetting.
Blazers don't have their firsts for the next 2 seasons looks like so they will definitely need to trade probably Wallace and/or Curry for win now talent since their team is pretty bad currently with only one good player in Houston.
Magic have a good chance of resetting imo they just need to make a few moves as well. Shouldn't be that hard to sneak in to the playoffs this season for them
Lakers should make the playoffs in the West this year pretty easy imo.
5. The Nets lost a few pieces in the off-season but still have Ben and Mike to lead the way. Who do you think is now the favorite to come out of the East? And who is the early favorite to win the title?
Covid:Last season, I had Heat winning the East, and I'm going to double down on that. Top to bottom their the most complete. Cav's are their only real threat, but Zo is a difference maker. We'll probably see a Heat-Clippers finals. Heat in 5. Idk way too early, but thats what I'll say now.
Game:There’s one answer for both the Cleveland Vedda’s as his former Co we built and incredible base and now everything is coming into fruition.Hope I get a ring too for all I did.
Jeb:Nets are still for sure a contender, I'd say out of the east the Cavs have a good shot to be there at the end fighting with the nets for top dog. KG really came out of his shell this past year as DPOY and i think that plus the scoring punch they have gives them the best shot.
Kobe: I thought the Nets were about to get their pick back and tank but looks like they will have to push out another 50ish win season. Don't think they will have the same success in the playoffs this season unless they pull off a nice trade or too. Which is possible.
6. How do you see your team stacking up this year? Whether for a top pick or a top seed, any moves you are looking to do to get you to that next level?
Covid: Honestly wanted to put my team in the previous question, but yea I feel really good about this season. Don't want to tip my hand, but something big is in the works for the Nuggets. I'm always looking to compete and make adjustments based off the competition, and my next move will be a testiment to this.
Game:My team is meh I’ll end up 8-11 range in lotto cuz no one offers more than 2nds for my dudes.I need to trade my old guys but I hate being ripped off.
Jeb:Well, my team is horrible. I want to get a high pick but i dont want to be blatantly tanking because 1 that is not allowed and 2 we all saw how well that worked out for Houston, masterful tanking, ends up with the fourth pick. I legit didn't realize it was possible to lose that much in FBB. I'll probably mess with my DC a lot this year to try out some of the glitches i know exist in FBB and how i could use those to my advantage going forward.
Kobe: Rockets got the 2nd best player in the draft in Dimitris I think the draft still worked out for them. Rockets like a lot of teams will be relying on the 03 draft and FA to make their CY. Dimitris is a better start than a lot of similar teams have honestly.
7. Rockets had some bad luck in the lotto and are now in a tough spot. Is the only way you see them making the playoffs next year or winning 42 is if they get Lebron? What would you do in his situation?
Covid: I don't think they had bad luck at all. He has no pressure at all, he made playoffs season 1, and got the best player in Season 2, he's actually in a really great spot if hes able to get a top 4 pick this season as well.
Game:Well he’ll be okay cuz he belongs to our Hue crew(even if he is the black sheep)and well help him cuz that’s our boy Ahsan.Enjoy the gifts friend.
Jeb:Not sure about the needing LeBron, with Matrix and DD that team has a pair of nice cornerstones, another good pick or a hit in FA and I think they are in a good place.
Kobe: Rockets got the 2nd best player in the draft in Dimitris I think the draft still worked out for them. Rockets like a lot of teams will be relying on the 03 draft and FA to make their CY. Dimitris is a better start than a lot of similar teams have honestly.
8. Speaking of next year, we’ve already had some articles about the upcoming FA class coming up. Anyone you are excited to see hit the market? If you had to pick one player to hit FA and not resign with their team, who would it be?
Covid:to be completely honest, I'm not a big FA guy, I try to put my team in position without having to deal with the drama of signing outsiders from FA. I like to keep it in house. My biggest targets this offseason will be too secure Raef and Jalen Rose long term. If I had to choose a player from a different team, I would want 100 pot Michael Jordan to hit the market.
Game:I really like Big Dog Glen Robinson he gets the buckets.I won’t mind 1 year maxing PJ Brown again as well.
Jeb:For amusements sake I'd be curious how many teams would try and max the much talked about Crawford. I know for a fact I wont be one of them. I just dont want my PG to throw up every shot ever and make way for any opposing PG to light more fires than the people turning these protests into chances to light things on fire.
Kobe: Ben Wallace. But there are a lot of guys since almost everyone is expiring lol. Should be a landscape changing FA for the league.
9. Summer vacation is coming up… are you more of a beach or lake or ski/hiking guy? Where would want to go?
Covid: I live in San Diego so I'm definitely a beach guy. A summer vacation for me is linking up with all the boys in July for NBA Summer League, but thats kind of dead this year. So we're all talking bout just saving and making it a go in the fall when football season is back. Maybe catch Brees or Brady vs the Raiders. That would be cool.
Game:As a family we usually head to the beach quite a bit since we’re so close to so many here in California. But I need to get into the lake aka camping more the kids are always asking to do it more.
Jeb:Man oh man this sounds lovely. In a perfect, no Virus and No Protests world, my chosen summer plans are normally off at a lake house with a few of my guys and our significant others and then one trip with the better half, I'd love to head back to the NE and maybe go hang out in Burlington VT or something. I've come to realize I am such a lazy city kid these days, tried to go hiking last fall and about a mile into the hike i looked at my fiancee and just went I dont want to do this any more, she laughed, told me she was about to say the same thing and we went and found a brewery, much better times followed with way less work.
Kobe: More of a lake kinda guy but live right near the beach. Went to Gulf Shores/OBA last week. Will probably go a few more times over the summer.
