Welcome BBS to "8 From The Trough", where 4 GM's are invited to the Pigpen to chow down on 8 questions regarding the league! This is brought to you by John Salmons, your favorite combo guard who will be AC'd out of control! Let's get started!
1.) With this being the first year where we start seeing some talent players coming off of expiring contracts, do you think that significantly hurts their value in trade negotiations? If so, how do you attempt to acquire fair trade value for your players who expiring, especially those you are not sure will require max contracts.
Chipper: For me- I would struggle to give anything for an expiring- but that’s just the situation my team is in to be honest. I can see why other teams going all out this season would want to make a move. I have a bunch of cap space at the end of the season, so I can go all out in free agency if need be. Also- I don’t have any expirings that have any real value so yeah.
Red: I think it makes people fearful. In one sense you really only want to get a stud that is worthy of a max, or you’ll have some team with cap come in and take the tasty cookie you just had for a 1 yr max, that they can then just flip for pennies on the dollar. ..
Nanz: This is a good question and it’s a bit tricky. I know that when I’ve been looking around for some deals, the fact that a player is expiring makes me a little nervous to know that he may be just a 1 year rental. At the same time, there are soooo many players hitting the market that we are all kind of on the same boat. A player like Larry Hughes is worth a MAX in my heart but if he hits the market who knows what he gets when you have other big time talent in the pool. Overall, I think most of the league doesn’t really view these expirings as a negative when talking trade because it is the norm at this point. Did I answer the question? I think I came pretty close….
SARGO: It really depends on the player, but overall I'll say no. These guys will all have bird years, so that shouldn't hinder their value THAT much. When I have a guy that is expiring and he can't really help me in the current season, I'll try and swing him for some future assets or another piece that can help me. Prime example, Kenyon Martin. When I acquired Martin, he was supposed to be my 3rd big. Since, I have acquired Eddie Griffin and Joel Pryzbilla, who both are better. Martin is unfortunately redundant now for me, so I flipped him for shitty ass Marbury. At least Marbury will give me more depth at the SG position.
PIGS TAKE: I made it clear in my original Zo roundtable that I feel like expiring contracts, especially with guys where GM’s don’t know or feel like they will need a max contract, always lose value. What exacerbates the situation this year is that you don’t have any CY teams you can pawn these guys off on in order to generate fair value. I think it’s a slippery slope that GM’s have to navigate.
2.) The Nets decided that they would decided to rebuild without their 1st Round pick for this years draft by dealing MJ to the Nuggets. Do you think it is critical to rebuild only when you have your pick? Or is there more to it that we don't see.
Chipper: My philosophy is this- unless you are getting a crazy goodnoffer where something that is comparable to your pick is included- don’t rebuild without your pick. It gives you something to look forward to at the end of the season.
Red: The only strategy I can think of is, since MJ was expiring anyway, why not get something for him before he either has to MAX him and make him hard to trade or lets him slide away in FA for nothing in return. Preferably you don’t want to start the tank without your 1st, but I can see why Greeme did this.
Nanz: This one hits a little close to home for me sooo. First off I don’t think Greeme is rebuilding right now, but retooling enough to get thru and start tanking next year. Do I think its smart? No. You only have 3 years to be able to tank and make the playoffs so by taking the risk of not winning 42 AND not getting an asset in the draft, you’ve pretty much wasted a year. I know you pretty much just did that and now only have 2 years left of taking to try to get back to the playoffs. Taking away a year of the rebuilding process for nothing is just not worth it. Should have taken the pick from me in any of the 3 deals we had discussed lol
Sargo: Here's the thing and it's unrelated to the Nets situation. You can rebuild without your pick is you have elite young. If you don't have elite youth and you don't have your pick, then what the fuck are you doing? The Nets don't fall into that category as they can still win. I would have traded for their pick back first, then dealt of MJ and the rest of the pieces if rebuilding was the direction.
Pigs TAKE: Send Ben Wallace to the Lakers and it’s a non issue. I think a big issue is that a lot of these GM’s want a King’s Ransom for these picks. At some point you need to decide if you can get better value somewhere else.
3.) When you are evaluating all statistics and trying generate a players trade value, what stat do you believe is the most overrated by GM's?
Chipper: Probably points per game. It’s important- but sometimes looking at the percentages tells you more about the player than anything. But FBB is so screwy when it comes to that. They did a great job in FBB3 of expanding the advanced stats tremendously (PER, oEff, dEff, EWA).
Red: Blocks. I mean it’s a great thing to have, but it is not an auto TO that a steal is.
Nanz: That’s a good question. I guess I’ll go with blocks and really for selfish reasons. When looking at AK the man does 3 steals with 1 block but doesn’t have the same value as someone who does 2 and 2. A turnover is a turnover and I love AK. He is a nice man who is quiet but plays hard and gives it his all. Plus what if you block a shot but 9 out of your 10 blocks go out of bounds that doesn’t do us any good does it?! People also love points regardless of each teams circumstances.
Sargo: Obviously assists. Like Biggie once said, "More assists, more problems."...or something like that. But yah, I like low passing, high handles point guards, so passing and high letter grade handles is useless to me. Give me a C handles guy who averages 5:2 A:TO ratio over a A guy who does 10:4 A:TO.
Pigs Take: Well you have to put the ball in the basket to win the game Chipper. Assists is the easy answer I think here. Stocks have value. I think a lot of teams look at TO’s from an individual perspective and not fully from the team perspective and that’s what value and fit should be based off of.
4.) Name the 5 strongest GM's in the league right now as you see it and why?
Chipper: In no particular order- greeme (champ- no explanation needed), ashes (he’s built that team into a monster), svedda (done a great job with building a team in the mistake by the lake that is Cleveland), kobe (all-around solid GM), and Habes (love what he’s done with the Mavs).
Red: Ashes, Skillz, Svedda, Game, and you. So far the only bad thing you’ve done was a freak accident that was unlikely, and that Malone was going to call it one and done. Right now you have so many picks and will have so much cap room to pick up FA, the team will be back in no time. Play / Insane was gonna make the list, but since they co-GMing... Speaking of, has anyone ever seen Insane and Play on at the same time? Svedda seems like the real deal, the Cavs just keep getting better. Skillz is a used car salesman, but a good one. He knows what he is selling and gets the most bang for his buck. Ashes, is just amazing, the Magic trade is just one of the things he’s done that when he wins, it’s a landslide. In just two years he has taken a good team that would probably make the playoffs most years, into a contender.
Nanz: Ashes: Started off the league with Kobe and has traded his way to get Nash, then JJ with Walker and Amare (some luck of course) but he is just constantly winning and his teams are always in the mix.
Skillz: I mean this guy loves to trade and even though some trades are better than other, he always finds a way to make something out of nothing. Prime example, last year I had his pick and thought I could wait and get something good for it, instead he trades and rallies off 50 wins. Then he pulls off another trade by getting Big Dogg and now he’s got another good looking squad.
Haberino: No doubt my main man. Similar to Skillz he is not afraid to make offers and take chances to make something work. He knows how to build his teams and I always like how he doesn’t worry about having too many players in the same position, they are assets and he’ll figure it out (TP & Kidd). He looks beyond the ratings which is hard to do… even though GMs say they don’t look at just ratings its easier said than done.
Kobe: Another guy is willing to take his team in any direction. He understands value and knows how to build good teams. He’s also known to make something out of nothing when he made all those trades last year and got TMac then knew when to bail.
Also hard not to go with JR who won the first title and was not afraid to tear it down when he thought it was the right now. He didn’t trade me Allan tho soooo kinda still hurts.. and so he is not on my list! Just a shout out…..
Sooo..Last and yes, also least.. I’m going to go with my main squeeze Erbes! Yes the big slick turkey! He marches to the beat of his own drum and so far has put together solid teams each and every year! When people made fun of him for trading all those 1sts in the creation draft and then turned around and traded BACK for future first… he didn’t care! When people are trying to go fast and outside he wants to go slow and inside! Gotta give him propz!
Sargo: Svedda and the Cavs - good team from the get-go, always a contender.
Skillz and the Knicks - another good GM, some questionable deals, but usually makes up for it.
ashes and the Kings - Great haul for Kobe, nice deal for Nash. He needs bigs who defend and rebound if he wants to win a title though.
JR and the Jazz - ya he's tanking now and didn't get the best value, but he crushed the creation draft and won a title.
Greeme and the Nets - another title winner and a guy who killed it with the creation draft.
PIGS Take: Playsane, Skillz, I don’t think Sargo gets enough credit honestly. Kobe seems pretty on top of stuff. Svedda in no specific order.
5.) You have to rate the Blazers and Lakers as an outside GM. Which team has the brighter future and why?
Chipper: Oooooof. Tie. Dirk is a cheat code- but Gilbert is on another level with his scoring. If you put a gun to my chest, I’d say the Lakers- but only because they are currently ahead in the standings.
Red: Lakers look to be a a little bit better, tenacious D and a couple scorers and they edge out Portland for the next few years.
Nanz: Ummm I love my good pal Don but give me the Lakers baby! Gilbert looks like a crazy man doing 35 points a game and around 3 turnovers, this guy is a superstar. Then you’ve got Brand who can do 3 blocks a game while avg. 25 and 12… in league without many big, that is something you want. AK is now doing 4 steals+blocks a game and crashing the boards… he looks like he’s turned the corner. And lastly, Larry big balls Hughes… the man is as CLUTCH as it gets. He already has 3 buzzer beaters this year and has no regard for human life! Assassin. That s a core I’d like to party with.
SARGO: I'll say the Lakers, but only because they have the best young player on either roster. If we are talking longevity, then the Lakers. Gilbert Arenas could be an MVP candidate for years to come. Brand is a nice 2nd or 3rd piece. Hughes is solid, AK is eh. The Blazers have a good mix of youth and vets as well.
PIGS Take: Blazers now with Dirk but Lakers could make something out of that Nets pick to bring them over the line.
6.) The CY will be coming up next year for the first time. Does anyone become CY'd or does anyone make it through? Who gets CY'd and why?
Chipper: I’m gonna be optimistic and say everyone makes it! I’m a positive guy like that. No one gets canned and then they’ll trade me the good players after they make it!
Red: Hmm the only candidates are Magic, Sonics, Lakers, Portland, and Phoenix. Sonics might be high risk as they are losing with Shaq. Looking at the teams Phoenix is young and will probably win next year. Portland needs to win this year as they are winning too much and wont get a tasty treat in the draft to help them next year. Magic swung big in FA this year to try and reset their CY and it looks like with the small sample so far, struck out. Had they not traded away all their good guys they would have reset this year. If they don’t get a tasty treat in the 03 draft, and do better in FA next year, they will be on the outside as one SG no matter how good, cannot win in FBB.
Nanz: Man, I this one is so hard to tell because a lot of the teams who are going into their CY will have cap and if they sign any of the big time players hitting the market (and there are a lot) they will be more than fine. Suns are off to a slow start but they have the pieces to put together at least a 42 win team. Blazers are more than good. Houston hit big with Dimitris and Marion… another top pick and they are in a good spot. I guess I’ll maybe go with the Hawks? If they don’t get in FA and they miss out on the top 5 players…. That roster is a little light especially if not a lot of teams are tanking. What do I know tho… I’m not a therapist.
SARGO: I think some team will be CY'd, yes. I'll say the Bucks. I like chipper, he's a good guy and a good GM, but has been handed some shit luck. Right now his roster is littered with C type prospects, with the exception of Arvydas Macijauskas. Even if he gets LeBron, is that enough to get him in the playoffs? Questionable. If his pick drops to 4 and he lands Bosh, he's in hot water. He may be forced to deal his draftee at the draft for win now players if he wishes to stay in the league...or he can hope he can strike gold in FA
PIGS TAKE: Hawks need some help.
7.) Who is the BBS champion this year and how do they get it done?
Chipper: Gotta go with Sacramento. To quite John Cena- “Ruthless. Aggression.” That team is a monster of a team. He really lucked into the Amar’e pick.
Red: this is a tough one. My thoughts it’s gonna be Kings v Cavs for the championship and the Kings are one of the few teams with the talent to slow KG down. If you can stop KG then the Cavs are beatable, and the Kings have just enough firepower to take them out.
Nanz: I’ll go with the… Kings! I mean they have a ton of pieces to work with and they added Amare in the draft LOL. JJ and Nash were great last year and they had a great series with the Mavs. A year later Okur like a hell of a center, Walker is nice looking SF and if he trades Amare for a shot blocking big? Wallace? Man watch out !! Sleeper pick my good pal HABERINO. Guy is always wheeling and dealing and if he gets a trade done JO you can bet your bottom dollar it will make him the favorite. He was just in the finals so hey! WE BELIVEE IN DALLAS!
SARGO: I said it in the other roundtable, so I have to stick with it. I'll say the Cavs. They have a balanced roster and 3 legit stars in Keith Van Horn, Grant Hill, and Kevin Garnett. Payton is a nice fourth piece. I hope to see our team make it deep into the playoffs, but I'm afraid we are too young. Maybe next year with an addition to the roster + training camp + camps...
PIGS TAKE: Cavs over Kings in 6.
8.) Who lands Lebron James with the 1st overall pick?
Chipper: It had damn well better be the Milwaukee Bucks. We need something to fall our way for once.
Red: In a cruel twist of fate, like last draft the worst tanker doesn’t get the #1 pick and Houston hits the lottery even though the bucks only win 3 games for the season.
Nanz: i. It’s have to be the Bucks. They are already 0 and 10 to start the season and they have nothing outside of boozer to help them win games. Bucks are defineltey in the best position to land the number 1 pick without question…. However, history tells us that a team will more than likely jump in the Lotto soooo I say the Hawks or Hornets finish 4th or 5th and jump to get Lebron! CONGRATS PIG! YOU DID IT! YOU HAVE LEBRON JAMES! And just for good measure, I’ll throw out another scenario…. Wallace gets hurt for the rest of the season…? Nets pick ends up being 7th -10th….? Lotto balls do their thing and BAM, Lebron to LA! I like the sound of that… really do.
SARGO:
I'm going to say chipper and the Bucks. He's 0-10 right now. He'll likely be the #1 projected and it's just about not dropping in the lottery. Last year in a RT, I predicted that Ahsan would win and I was wrong, so there is that...
PIGS TAKE: Hornets clearly.
Thanks to Chipper, Red, Nanz and Sargo for participating!
