We’ve had a lot of trade activity lately, so I decided to delve into player value like we did two seasons ago. And boy, while a good deal has changed, the top of the top has remained remarkably steady as well!

Let’s get to it. As always, player value involves production, ratings, contract status, age, player perception and alike.

As a reminder, I ranked your players much lower than they should be ranked and it is because I have a personal vendetta against you.

Okay, let’s get to it.

Tier 5 (75-51):

A mix: a) very old players who used to be elite but no longer carry the same value because of their age, b) interesting prospects who are not sure things, C) good players in their respective prime’s who can start on contending teams but are not the key to a title team’s success. 

Some thoughts: Lots of fun young players here, but I didn’t really know what to do with this batch. Not a lot these guys have in common. I really like some of the young guys here. Shouts to Richard Jefferson, Tyson Chandler and Okur. MJ and Robinson are obviously elite, elite players but both are on one-year rentals and are only in play for 5-6 teams around the league. I had no idea what to do with Baron Davis and Steve Francis. Both are uber-talented, but might be destined to play at SG. Michael Finley and Jamison could have been higher but I thought they had more in common with the players on this list than guys on other parts of this ranking.

Tier 4 (50-37):

Enticing young players (cut-off: age 25) who have the potential to rise on this list in the future. These guys are either flawed, not fully formed, or haven’t reached their respective peaks yet.

Some thoughts: Yep, category description speaks for itself. Fun young guys! All are imperfect. Amar’e sucks right now but it’s clear to me he had 100 potential and still has some in the tank. He has name value. Curious to see how he performs going forward. Caron Butler is going to be awesome. My guy Z-Bo has played like an elite, elite big this season.

Tier 3 (37-27):

Prime-aged complementary players who are foundational pieces on good teams. These guys are really good, in their prime, but probably wouldn’t be tasked with superstar duties on an elite team. The best # 2 and # 3 bananas in the league. 

Some thoughts: Yep, some classic # 2 or # 3 options here. Jalen Rose has been absolutely outstanding this season and is playing like he deserves to be higher on the list. The Webber/Camby/Brand trio are all great 3rd players on elite teams, but struggle when thrust into a bigger role. I like what Marion and Rasheed Wallace have become. Manu is fucking awesome. His position is just oversaturated. Bibby is underrated.

Tier 2 (26-13)

Really good players who can function as your best player but are ideally suited as # 2’s on the best, best teams. Some of these guys are # 1s but are moved from tier 1 because of positional scarcity. Lots of good wings.

Some thoughts: All of these guys are awesome. DD/Yao will be in tier 1 in no time. Zo would be in tier 1 if not for age. Parker, Billups and Kidd are top 15 players because if positional scarcity, though I prefer them in that order. The grouping with Walker, hill, Houston, Robinson, KVH and Davis is really strong. But they can’t be listed any higher because of positional saturation. I imagine I’ll cop some flack by listing Big Dog over Houston, but TC happened, and he’s 2 years younger and posting markedly better numbers. And has over a big enough sample now.

The best players in the league, period. 

Some thoughts: T-Mac and Shaq benefit from name recognition. T-Mac isn’t there yet, but he’ll get there. Shaq needs the right GM. Crawford is my son and still absolutely awesome, but his potential going to passing will limit his scoring output. Arenas might be my favorite guy in the league, but I’m probably overrating him here. Tim Duncan still stands alone.
