ashes - Sacramento Kings
Ashes got the 1st overall pick in the creation draft and selected Kobe Bryant with it so he hasn't had the toughest challenge out of anyone here but I think he's still proven enough to get the top spot here. After the dust has settled a bit here in season 3, Kings have by far the best built team out West with Steve Nash-Glen Rice-Antoine Walker-PJ Brown-Ben Wallace and a solid bench. The Kobe trade has proven big for the Kings as they have been able to use those assets to build a real contender and they still have a great young prospect in Amare Stoudemire as well that they can groom or trade for better pieces since their wing spots are a little weak now. Ashes has made some great trades and besides drafted Amare over DD I think he's been arguably the best GM so far.
JR - Utah Jazz
JR is one of the only two GMs to win a title so far so he gets a lot of points just for that. And he had a great creation draft as well putting together a great win now team that obviously was good enough to win the title in season 1. Great job there and even though the team only had a 1-2 year window they capitalized and made the most out of it. The Jazz lost Bobby Jackson and Scot Pollard to free agency and then traded away Allan Houston and David Robinson for Tayshaun Prince basically. Not the best return there but the plan is clear now for the Jazz over the next few seasons as they are in for a long rebuild. If JR did a little better with getting more out of Houston and Drob he would probably be #1 but those trades were pretty bad. Overall though great job so far.
@aaronjh - Dallas Mavericks
Habes gets a lot of credit for the huge turn around from season 1 to 2 that ended with his team in the finals against the Nets. Impressive feat! The Mavericks took superstar Tracy McGrady and a promising young big in Jermaine O'Neal in the creation draft. They executed a nice tanking plan in season one that ended up with them drafting Tony Parker. The Mavericks have made a ton of trades so it's hard to keep up but currently they have one of the best back court duo's in the league with Jason Kidd and Ray Allen. They also just brought in Manu Ginobili and Sarunas Jasikevicious so their back court is pretty loaded right now. They don't have much in terms of forwards or big men on the team now so that will have to be addressed going forward.
darell - LA Clippers
We give darell and froggie a hard time but the Clippers success speaks for itself. Two straight conference finals appearances and what should have probably been a finals appearance last season if Duncan didn't get hurt in the CFs. They had arguably the best creation draft getting the best player in the league in Tim Duncan with the 2nd overall pick and then drafting some really nice win now type players like Jones, Williamson and Payton to surround him. They've been criticized a bit for some of their trades but I really like Jahidi White and LJ will be a monster for another season or two alongside Duncan. Bobby Jackson and Eddie Jones aren't really being used right currently for the Clippers so they still have some things to figure out this season but they'll always have a chance at a title with Duncan at the helm.
Royal - Denver Nuggets
Covid and the Nuggets struck it big early in the creation draft when the Heat pick they traded for ended up #6. After all was said and done they ended up with Shaq and Antonio McDyess to build around from the creation draft. It was definitely a bit of a struggle to find the right depth chart and put the right pieces around Shaq as the Nuggets didn't find much success so they traded Shaq at the end of last season for Paul Pierce and picks. And after one of the better off-seasons in which the Nuggets landed Michael Jordan and David Robinson for next to nothing, they should be one of the contenders in a very down year with everyone tanking and getting ready for 2003 FA. Jalen Rose, PP and MJ is the best wing trio in the league and they have a great frontcourt as well so good job!
Erbes - Memphis Grizzlies
Erbes caught a lot of flack for one of his early pre-draft trades but he ended up having one of the best creation drafts out of anyone and it has showed the first 2 seasons with his team winning 50+ and should be on their way to that mark again this season as well. Unfortunately the Grizzlies haven't had much playoff success and some of erbes moves like Dyess for Rose and not finding a better PG than Eric Snow have been questionable. Big Z, Theo and Grant were all great picks and have played well so he gets a lot of credit for that. If Grizzlies would have just kept Jalen, kept NVE and traded for another outside shooter or two I think they could have made a run last season. Unfortunate that Snow got hurt because I do think they match up well with the Clippers. We'll see if they can stay healthy this time around in the playoffs.
Nanz - LA Lakers
John Stamos! Stamos is a really nice GM and after a rough 2nd season it looks like things are finally turning around in tinsel town for the Lakers. The Lakers are one of those teams who went bare bones to start in the creation draft and pretty much just ended up with Larry Hughes and future first round picks after it. And that plan worked as the Lakers got the 2nd pick in the 2001 draft and ended up with the best player in Gilbert Arenas. Arenas is going to be a superstar and has the Lakers on the verge of a playoff run this season especially after the Lakers huge trades bringing in Glenn Robinson and Jamal Mashburn. They also brought in Jermaine O'Neal. The Lakers had to give pretty much everything they had besides Arenas in those deals though so will be interesting to see how they fill out the team going forward.
Orlando Magic Johnson - Portland Trailblazers
Dan traded his earlier picks for future firsts it looks like as the Blazers didn't have a pick in the creation draft until round 3. Doesn't look like any of those futures really amounted to much unfortunately. I actually really like what Dan did with his picks he did have in the creation draft though. Rip, Przybilla, Williams and Harrington are all really nice young players. Portland hasn't really been able to lose enough though as they haven't been able to acquire any of the top picks in the draft but I love Gerald Wallace and Eddy Curry so great jobs with the 2001 draft. Dan traded his pick in the 2002 draft for Allan Houston which is good value and just recently he got Dirk Nowitzki for Wallace, Curry and a first. So two top 10 players but unfortunately not much else surrounding them currently so we'll see what Dan pulls off next.
@ukfanjohn - San Antonio Spurs
John has done a really solid job but like a lot of teams has sort of been stuck in the middle these first few seasons. Had a pretty bad creation draft looking back on it with only Odom being the lone good player it seems will come out of the Spurs creation draft. I like the trades john has made though he acquired a ton of firsts and turned them in to Alonzo Mourning then traded him for Tracy McGrady who is one of the best young players in the league. John also drafted well and signed Manu Ginobili who helped him get Jamal Crawford this off-season. Crawford-Tmac-Odom is a really good trio but the cupboard is really bare after that for the Spurs and doesn't seem like they have many assets to trade so wouldn't be surprised if Odom is on his way out soon.
manasrai - Golden State Warriors
The Warriors have been one of the more exciting teams over the first two seasons with Dirk and Billups lighting teams up and manas deserves a ton of credit for being able to see how good Chauncey and Dirk for that matter were going to be. I think the Warriors sort of got caught in the middle in the creation draft with wanting to draft young players because they weren't expecting Dirk and Billups to be so good right away. But in hindsight they probably should have brought in older, win now players to surround Dirk/Billups then after a few trades I think they could have had a lot of success. But manas did the smart thing this season by trading Dirk and Billups away for nice returns and tanking for Lebron and co. He reset his CY so he has 3 seasons to play with now
Andrew - Phoenix Suns
Andrew is another GM who decided to draft young in the creation draft and just tank the first few seasons so it's hard to really give him a fair grade performance wise since we haven't seen much from him yet. Baron Davis was drafted pretty high and there were some worries about his development in to one of the league's best PG's but he should be a very good one at the very least. Suns landed the #1 pick in the 2001 draft and drafted Pau Gasol which is looking like a big mistake with how well Gilbert Arenas is playing. Pau is solid but his turnovers and lack of shot blocking will limit how good he can really be. Tyson Chandler is a solid young big who Phoenix is willing to be patient with and it looks like Suns are being patient again this season willing to go in to their CY next season with a lot on the line.
Go Niners - Houston Rockets
Ahsan came out of the gate wanting to tank hard his first 3 seasons and failed miserably in season 1 when the Rockets made the playoffs! Rockets righted the ship and got the #1 projected pick in the 2002 draft but unfortunately fell to 4. They still got the 2nd best player in the draft in Dimitris Diamantidis with the 4th pick and after Ahsan pumped him full of camps he looks like one of the best SG in the league after TC. Shawn Marion is also still on the team and putting up stellar numbers this season. Will be interesting to see how committed Ahsan wants to be to tanking this season because it will be hard with Marion and DD both clicking. Overall, it's hard to really judge a GM like this when they decide to tank the first few seasons because we haven't really gotten a chance to see the finished product and what kind of moves they will make to win.
Jeb - Minnesota Timberwolves
Jeb is my kind of guy we seem to have a good bit in common and I thought he started off doing a nice job by getting Vince Carter and surrounding him with a decent team in the creation draft with Abdur-Rahim and Damon Stoudemire. But wasn't really able to make any major moves to make the team better and ended up just moving Vince Carter for his 2003 first back after a debacle of a few trades in which he gave his firsts away basically. The tank job this season hasn't started out too well since they are in the playoffs currently but Twolves should end up with a top 5 pick and be on their way to a good rebuild if they can also get lucky with this 2003 free agency that should be super loaded with everyone around the league expiring.
13rock - Seattle Supersonics
I really like 13rock he seems like a sold fella but his first two seasons and so far this 3rd season haven't gone well for him. I thought he had a pretty decent creation draft at the time with Paul Pierce, Tim Thomas, Andre Miller but don't think he really filled the team out too well besides those guys. And didn't really make any trades to try to get better. Made some really strange moves at the end of last season in just giving Tim Thomas and a good shot blocker in Jim Mcilvaine away for free or they could've reset CY last season possibly once they traded for Shaq. The Shaq trade in itself was good value for the Sonics but it gutted their team. Things aren't looking to bright for the Sonics unless they get lucky in the 2003 major free agency.
