What Song is your current squad? (East edition)
*Songs were selected based on the artist/team location and/or the team’s current outlook as of day 35 of the 2002 season.
NY Knicks - Skillz
Current record- 19-10
Song- Ja Rule – New York
Why? As Amar’e said in 2010, the Knicks are back baby. Skillz has revamped, torn down then revamped this roster with several matriculation and versions over the past 2 seasons. Has he arrived a long term of core of Kidd-Miller-Rose-AK-DRob? Odds are probably not but that’s the way they do it in “NEW YORK” (*Ja Rule yell).
Miami Heat - kobe
Current record- 22-15
Song- Pretty Ricky- Grind with me
Why? Ricky Davis is the longest tenured Heat member now and most coveted by Kobe. His club is grinding it on in the East with a revamped and more retooling process with the departure of Alonzo Mourning for Zach Randolph and arrival of Chauncey Billups. Good things are ahead in the MIA.
Boston Celtics- Lasagna and tears of failure
Current Record- 18-11
Song- Dropkick Murphys- Shipping up to Boston
Why? Boston shook up their roster with not 1 but TWO deals this season after a grand total of one all of last season. Brian has shown some reluctance in dealing some players especially if they don’t rank highly on his spreadsheets. Either way, big men Ernest Brown and Elden Campbell got shipped to Boston and helping them in their playoff push.
New Jersey Nets- greeme
Record- 16-13
Song- Bon Jovi- Keep The Faith
Why? After the glow of last year’s championship run, the Nets lost Dikembe Mutumbo to retirement, dealt MJ to Denver and flipped Ben Wallace to Sacramento so a lot of the team has been revamped. Left standing are Iso Joe Johnson, Mike Miller Mehmet Okur, Jay Williams and some good depth pieces. Not to worry though, the Nets have an upper tier GM that will figure it out even if they’re missing their pick this year.
Washington Wizards- jahallstar
Record- 16-14
Song- Ginuwine - Pony
Why? The Wiz have had a pretty good start to their season and want to continue to ‘ride’ this momentum to their second straight playoff berth. Richard Jefferson is having a very good sophomore season after many labeled him a bust, Peja and Redd are shooting fantastic percentages and Haslem has been a very great rookie big man. DC is off to good start this year.
Philadelphia 76ers – Stevie B
Current record- 11-17
Song- Hall & Oates - Maneater
Why? The Sixers have a double trouble/man eating duo of Yao Ming and Antawn Jamison which account for almost 50% of their scoring this season. Jamison is probably having the quietest season for a star in the league kind of like Antoine Walker 2 seasons ago. Meawhile, Yao is dominating frontcourts with his amazing scoring and rebounding play. Outside of those two though, Sixers will need another maneater in the draft hopefully.
Orlando Magic- breakthewalls footy
Current Record- 10-19
Song- Weird Al- Dare to Be Stupid
Why? This one is pretty self-explanatory. Orlando might be the most ostracized and scrutinized team in the league and it’s not even close. Although footy has stabilized things somewhat upon arrival, it’s also muddied the waters for teams trying to trade with them because they don’t know who’s making the final call. Overall, the team isn’t bad but there’s been some questionable moves and roster construction issues. However, if they can make their CY this year they can make the rest of us look stupid as well.
Cleveland Cavaliers- 2 years left
Current Record- 33-6
Song- Notorious BIG Feat Bone Thugs- Notorious Thugs
Why?- Cleveland is the crown jewel of the East right now and it’s not even close after their great TCs of Gary Payton and Kevin Garnett. Everyone in the East is gunning for them but as long as they stay healthy, they should remain bullet proof till the Finals. Biggie along Cleveland based Bone Thugs would have a lot compliment the level of notoriety the Cavs are in.
Indiana Pacers- the original michael
Current Record- 20-10
Song- Limp Bizkit - Rollin
Why? Another pretty self explanatory song. Sargo has done an exceptional job of transforming the team into a young, up and coming squad in the East. The VC acquisition was marvelous and then to surround their shooters with great young bigs like Eddie Griffin, Joel Pryzbilla and Steven Hunter was masterful. This team is truly rollin right now.
Detroit Pistons - Galo
Current Record- 16-13
Song- Eminem- Till I Collapse
Why?- Everyone is trying to dig a grave for the Pistons and some of their mismatched player parts. However, this team still managed to make the playoffs the last 2 seasons and has remained competitive this season despite and up and down start. A rebuild might be in the cards soon which will cause the collapse but until then.
Chicago Bulls- Play /insane
Current Record- 15-15
Song- Kanye West Feat. Twista- Slow Jamz
Why?- This team can turn it on and turn it off it seems like just Twista’s flow and this 2002 Ye’ classic. These youngish Bulls are featuring Jerome Moiso, Will Avery and Marcus Camby as lynchpins next to Michael Finley. While the results have bee up and down after a stellar 2000 season, this team and GMs always figure it out.
Toronto Raptors- GAME
Current Record- 10-17
Song- Drake- God’s Plan
Why?- We think the Raptors have a plan to re-build? They might be too good for their own good though with Tony Parker and J-Rich are centerpieces on their roster. Toronto tanked the last season and hald and so far only have DaJuan Wagner and Nene Hilario. It’s still early though and if they can draft well this year, the plan might work out.
Atlanta Hawks- Losanglife
Current Record- 5-19
Song- Purple Ribbon All-Stars- Kryptonite
Why? Lack of moves and defense has been this team’s kryptonite this season. After having a strong offensive season last year, wings Stephen Jackson and DerMarr Johnson regeressed during TC and Steve Francis’ TO problem got even worse. All this has been a recipe for disaster in the ATL this year so they’re hoping for a stud with some lotto luck to add to past picks Sam Dalembert and Mike D.
New Orleans – Von
Current Record- 7-25
Song- Big Tymers- Drop it like it’s hot
Why? The Hornets are dropping hot and fast in the standings and this seems just like pig wants right now. This team as a couple young wings on their squad in Caron Butler, John Salmons and Bonzi Wells but need help in a lot of different ways. Here’s hoping that Baby and Manny Fresh push the Hornets to a top 4 pick.
Milwaukee Bucks- chipper
Current Recod- 5-24
Song- King James- Waiting for the King
Why? Not much needs to be said here. Chipper has assembled a tank job that has been very impressive. Little assets on his team aside from Carlos Boozer and Arvydas. They are waiting for King James or at least a top 4 pick.
