1. Break was recently CY'd. What could have he done differently to survive last season or was the Atlantic Division simply too good?
DeeperThanSims It's difficult making the CY in the East because there always seems to be 11 teams trying to make the playoffs. I've been caught off guard by it myself... I missed the playoffs a few years ago with 46 wins. You need a very solid team to secure 42 and Break's team was just too shaky. The improvement of the Heat didn't help either. I think he did the best he could with what he had.
Nanz I mean this is just too good LOL poor guy has been struggling to make his CY for as long as I can remember. I honestly don’t know what he did but where are the young players or picks to get talent? He always seems to have mid level talent and not go all in on the tank for the first two years? Just go all in on tanking next time for the first 2 years or possibly even 3 and load up on picks and young talent to trade on year 4. You can’t be afraid of the CY and try to make it in year 3 because if you don’t, youll be in an even worst position. I dk that’s just my take on it lol I won one of my rings in my CY.
Von I didn't really follow Break that well this season. I think you have to look at what he did cumulatively over the past couple of seasons. I know he has consistently had some issues appropriately valuing players. Joe Rice was a pretty good example of that.
nybombers3 I think there were a lot of moves made and not enough time to mess around and see what could've worked. That's kind of the problem with waiting till CY though. He also lacked assets. Getting 1sts isn't impossible but you have to find ways to do it.
2. Piggy backing off question #1, what advice would you give Break the next time IF he gets another team so he doesn't get CY'd again?
DeeperThanSims Break has already shown signs of improvement down the stretch. The Nuggets and Sonics deals were very nice. I think he just needs to be patient and rebuild properly when he comes back. Get the best youth/pick packages possible and clear cap room - I can't stress the importance of cap enough. Most teams don't have significant cap space here so you have a higher chance of stealing good/great players in FA. From there you can flip them for more assets. Finally, he needs to hold his own picks until he is sure his team is good.
Nanz Pretty much what I said above. Go all in on the tank and trade all your players for picks and commit to sucking for at least the first 2 years. Use the cap to try to sign big studs or good players on 1 year contracts to trade for a pick or just expiring in case you run out of time and they start ruining the tank. Just be patient and don’t panic? I dk lol
Von I don't know how much advice other GM's were giving Break throughout the course of his tenure but I can say with my experience with him he would ask advice and do his own thing anyway. When he was my AGM he only asked me a single question. He needs to develop a fool proof system that he needs to follow and not stray away from on the team he wants to develop. One of the good things he can start with is not trading his picks for mediocre players until he gets a stud or two on his team. He needs to get a better perception on Age/Talent/Contract length and their relative value(s). I can't really comment on what he is thinking so I don't know how he views how to build a team but he doesn't know how to value players appropriately.
Come on as an AGM and be proactive in trying to learn the game from a GM that is willing to teach you. Ask many questions about thought processes and trades. I don't really know what else to say other than that.
nybombers3 Do what you did before you got cyd. It was literally the best moves made. Focus on asset acquisition and don't panic.
3. Thoughts on Marty switching over to the Nets? Do you think he can turn that messy franchise around anytime soon?
DeeperThanSims I don't really care but I can see why people thought it was suspect after the Kuminga deal. Personally I think he made things worse for himself. Arizin is a great young player and Kuminga is still tradable for now. Also, Marty operates amongst the bottom of conferences and the bottom of the East is harder than the West. We'll see how he does.
Nanz Lol such a weird move… no idea why he wanted to switch but oh well! Whatever makes him happy. I mean the Nets don’t have their pick this year but after that they don’t seem to be in bad shape so im sure Marty will be fine.
Von I was originally confused on what was happening as there was some ambiguity behind it. Don't really have any thoughts on it at all. Need to define turning the team around better. Championship caliber team anytime soon? Nah? Better than what Break did? Yes. Dario and Balewa are not the guys I want on MAX's trying to figure out how to win.
nybombers3 Marty trolls but he's a capable GM. I think he'll do just fine with the Nets.
4. The 2034 BBS Draft has concluded. Would you change anything in the top 10?
DeeperThanSims The last half of the top 10 was interesting. I don't think Svedda should have got Eddie Miller at 9, that was a great pick for him. I'm not sure how I feel about Bill Mlkvy at 6. I definitely don't like Chuck Darling at 8. That was a wasted pick by Brian. Play might have made out the best with Dick Groat at 10. His outside, handling and defense ratings are all close to a solid B. He could look ridiculous after TC.
Nanz nope! Love the draft and Mr Monk fell to the right Franchise! Love the talent we had in this draft and hopefully TC is kind to us….
Von I'll be honest I looked at very few notes, I thought it was pretty ugly though after 4 maybe? I thought Eddie Miller could of went 4 and moved to SF. No idea how he got to 9. Hated Brian's pick. Didn't really like Royal's pick. Dan and DBW's picks were alright. Probably would of went 4-7 with Miller, Davis, Zeke, Groat.
nybombers3 Miller should have gone much higher IMO. That aside, I think it was ok. Don't love the guard the Spurs picked but someone was taking him top 10
5. The Hornets built an all star squad last season and took home the championship. Assuming they keep the same squad next season, do you see any teams stopping them from repeating?
DeeperThanSims The Hornets won't have the space under the hard cap to bring the exact team back. My guess is Paolo Banchero will be out of there for depth. But yes, as along as that core of Wanzer/TT/Barnes is in place, I think they will win again this coming season. That trio is amazing. Check the box scores from the playoffs. All 3 were consistently dominating their matchups, with Wanzer picking up slack whenever TT or Barnes were off. I can't believe Wanzer became this good.
Nanz haven’t really looked around the league but going back to back is tough to do. I think he mentioned retooling a little bit but Scottie is 33 and having a bad TC could change everything up. They are also going to have some issues once they bring back Wanzer so we’ll see. A lot of good teams out East.
Von Well I currently have 6 players (5 really). Signing Wanzer is critical and then I am going to be left with 6 min contracts for depth if I don't trade any of my guys. Scottie and Paulo can't die. I think it is doable but I need to be fairly meticulous with who I sign Day 4 and 5. There is a lot of value with some of these guys left on day 4 and 5 so I have to pick appropriately.
If Wanzer walks it's going to be trying to find a PG either by MLE or other means. I think I have some guys with birds so hopefully leverage the remaining 15 million I have to build a supporting cast around Barnes, Bauchero and TT. Barnes can play PG in a worst case scenario even though I would need some massive front court help to support that.
nybombers3 Hm. I don't think they'll keep the team in tact but the Knicks and Heat should give them problems. Might be 76ers final run aa well.
6. What are your plans for your own team next season?
DeeperThanSims I'll be continuing my rebuild. Dropping from 2 to 5 hurts as Conley is a future superstar big but I'll be aight. I have 1 elite prospect in Lew Hitch and a huge amount of cap space. I made sure I had enough cap to sign multiple rookie maxes or 1 rookie max and 1 vet max. I hope to sign George Mikan at least. There are only 3 teams including mine with max cap so I have a good chance which is awesome. Anyone else I sign is just gravy. I'll probably trade whoever I end up signing for more assets unless It's Dolph! His age is inline with the rest of my squad. Anyway, I need 1 more Tankpapi year then DeeperThanSims is back to competing.
Nanz just kinda going with the flow. The plan was to tank this year but I also really like JW so who knows… we def are not good enough to make the playoffs so probably another lotto while we keep adding some talent. Big Monk is going to be a key part of how much we can do this year but I think for now, we tank and clear up cap for next year.
Von See above.
nybombers3 Hopefully reset but honestly just building. Would love to get max cap next season while resetting. I really like my frontcourt going forward. Dick looks like he'll be a good PG. Just building right now tbh.
7. How do you feel about the league adding guys like George Mikan during in-season and then FA? Great for the league or nah?
DeeperThanSims I think I saw Chipper say that Mikan was never drafted and signed through FA so this is as realistic as it gets. I know a few guys were a little upset with him going to the Magic but they ended up losing to the Hornets anyway. I really like these additions, it keeps things fresh.
Nanz I forgot about it sooooooo yeah. Adding a great player based on luck is kinda meh I guess? Then again signing them in FA is also luck but at least you have to manage your cap to make sure you are even able to sign that player. I liked it when we did it with AK and Manu so I think I rather it have it done that way…?
Von Mixed feelings. I thought Galo didn't run the best DC's with what he had on his team and that's kind of what killed him at the end. Wouldn't be wild about it every year but once in a while it is pretty cool.
nybombers3 I asked something similar in my article but I like it. Adds more to the league and gives a nice jolt to the league when it may start slowing down for those squads not as interested in the season.
8. Switching to the NBA, thoughts on Andrew Wiggins becoming an All Star starter in the West? I'm actually surprised as a Warriors fan because well...he's Andrew Wiggins. Who do you think got snubbed?
DeeperThanSims I had to Google this because I was certain you typed the wrong player name lol. I haven't followed the NBA this week. I can't believe a K-pop star had enough pull to get Andrew Wiggins enough votes for a starting slot. It might be time for the NBA to adjust the weight of fan voting because this is too wild. How many regular fans of the NBA want to see Wiggins out there? I know I don't, no disrespect. I couldn't figure out who the next highest vote getter was but that player should get Wiggins slot.
Nanz haven’t been following the NBA much this year but when I saw his name I thought it was pretty cool. He’s one of those players who never panned out so it was nice to him be an all-star. Who got snubbed? Ummmm I dk? Probably Luka lol
Von No idea.
nybombers3 I saw that. Pretty wild that weed plate is an allstar. No idea who would be a better option. Haven't paid that much attention since the Knicks are ass but someone had to be a better option.
9. Lastly, predict who will win between Spencer's Niners and the Rams this Sunday.
DeeperThanSims I only watch Superbowls, but I'll root for the Niners for Spence!
Nanz I am a Rams Fan sooooo yeah LETS GO BABAY!!!!!!!
Von Not popular but I would like the Rams to win. Stafford seems like a good dude and rooting for him to win a SB.
nybombers3 I think the Rams win a close one. Niners should've lost both games tbh but fuck it. They got it done. Rams are pretty capable of a choke job as well so it'll be interesting.
DeeperThanSims It's difficult making the CY in the East because there always seems to be 11 teams trying to make the playoffs. I've been caught off guard by it myself...
