Below is a roundtable. Please consider rating it a 5.
1. The usual question- what's your thoughts on your team this season? Are playoffs a possibility or no?
DeeperThanSims - I think we'll make the playoffs as a 5th seed. We started 3-5 and have a crappy differential but I think that was my DC and not my players. I was copying the trendy Very Fast/Often settings instead of doing my usual shit. I have good talent at every position with the ability to improve so I'm not too worried. I'll continue to improve my team throughout the season.
Brophdog88 - Hell no, if I make the playoffs, things have gone horribly wrong with the rest of the west, I've got a bunch of rookies and castoffs. Or I was given 5 starting caliber players for nothing.
nybombers3 - Nope. I don’t think we will ultimately make the playoffs. Just tanking for Petit. All about Petit. I’m pretty shocked we have done what we have done thus far. I should have at least one solid shot at him so we'll see how that will go. Overall I think we're in a decent position. Foust rebounding is awesome. Stocks are decent. Conley looks nice thankfully. If RJ can retire this offseason we should go in with cap.
greeme - kinda got bored and wanted to rebuild. I couldn't get enough deals done. Not a fan of where my team is now. Probably just try to make the playoffs and move guys in the offseason or at the deadline.
chipper - Eh- if my team gets on a run and stays healthy, we COULD make the playoffs. I highly doubt it though.
2. What was your opinion of the Blazers offseason? Took on a lot of contracts in order to try to win but it doesn't seem to be working so far (after first sim, 1-6).
DBW- DB is up against the CY next season so I understand his want to put together talent now. I really hated the Kuminga and Iverson deal as it killed his salary situation, then he compounded it with getting Will Maxwell. If he had cheaper starters around those guys, he could make it work. Luckily he has his pick this year and other assets like Bill Mlkvy and Frank Ramsey to flip. I'd consider tanking the year for a top pick and entering my CY if I were in his position. He might make a good trading partner with the Spurs. Edwards and Green for Kuminga, Iverson, Mlkvy, Embry and his two 2037 1sts? No clue if that matches up salary wise but it allows DB to reduce his salary and the Spurs get 4 players that can play, along with 1sts to flip.
Broph- Well that seems painful, and also mean to ask, given you gave him some of those. Kuminga looks great, but you are significantly handicapped by what can only be considered an albatross of a contract (nearly 2/3rds of the cap right now, up to 4/5ths by the end). There seems to be a lot of talent in the league, so shelling out for somebody that looks like that is a bit painful, just because it puts such a heavy restriction on what you can do with the rest of the team. He desperately needs a big that can rebound, they are getting smashed on the boards, which never works out great, but I dont see the salary to cover that, gonna have to deal off Iverson and youth. The good news is, Ramsey is gonna hold a lot of value, but its pretty rough right now.
NYB- Don't love it. Especially taking on Kum. It wasn't a god awful deal overall but taking both those guys (Ivo and Kum) puts the Blazers in a tough contract position where they need to reset or might be screwed without moving picks and e in a deal. I would look to dump Ivo at least. He seems like hes fallen off. Not sure the fit is great either.
Greeme- I think they could make the playoffs if they get their dc together but they could also fall short. Might as well tank, add an asset and make their move next year.
Chipper- I loved it. I was involved in it, but I loved it. Glad DB is going for it.
3. Do you think these drafts have been good to rebuild in? Why or why not?
DBW- I thought and still think the drafts were kinda fun but the ages were definitely a problem. The recent draftees just aren't valued as much and I think age is a big factor. Many GMs aren't interested in trading their 29 year old vet for a 25 year old rookie deal guy. I also think lack of name recognition is a factor. There is a level of excitement in trading for the players we know and that isn't there right now. Last, we probably need more useful players around the mid-picks of the 1st round. It's possible we are missing good players due to lack of letter ratings, but just thought I'd throw that out there. A little more depth to the drafts would be good.
Broph- I mean, I liked a lot of those prospects in this last draft, but I had a lot of bullets, and took a lot of people that were gambles to go big. Ratings seem to be quite inflated, which makes it hard for role players drafted to have any value. There are a lot of shooting wings, so its tough to differentiate and separate without doing something else. Its a tough spot, especially not knowing the history of the league well, what led to this, (camps, draft talent etc)
NYB- I do think they are more volatile I guess. Likely wrong word but I am writing this at almost 2. Either way, what I mean is that talent is spread more throughout. The end of the draft seems like it has more hidden role guys then in the past. I think you can rebuild through these drafts but shouldn't be the only way anyways.
Greeme- yup, there have been plenty of studs both early and late.read the notes, ask questions and you will do fine
Chipper- read the notes, do your research, and the players will be fine. I've been very lucky to draft some of the best that have come in.
4. Off the top of your head- name the 5 best players you can think of that came into the league since we went back to using real players from the 40s and 50s.
DBW- Wanzer, Rocha, Barksdale, Cousy, Ed Mac? That's off my head. Feels like I'm forgetting a guy or two but I'm comfortable with that list for now. I know guys like Rixey, Arizin, Sharman, etc. but I wouldn't put them top 5.
Broph- I dont know any players, so the list off the top of my head is gonna be rough.
Red Rocha, Bob Cousy, George Mikan uhh, those 3 I know, Cousy is amazing, Rocha is the type of post player that I dream about having, and Mikan seems to be in that same vein, Big that shoots ft's great, blocks shots, elite rebounding. Tehnically I could say braun now, but I dont know if he clearly fits the bill. for off the top of my head though he would be fourth. I know him, he played on my team, shoots outstanding, great fit in an outside offense. Net + on steals to TO's.
now I'm cheating, and I see Jack Coleman on the Knicks putting up great numbers, great rebounding wing, which seems important, and Paul Arizin on your team has that same kinda fit (wait a minute, I think I get why this question was asked now).
NYB- Oh boy. Legit without looking: Mel Hutchins, Bill Sharman, Paul Arizin, Bob Cousy, George Mikan
Greeme- cousy is head and shoulders above anybody else. Mikan is great. Groza, Rocha and shayes. Tom's or wings Ramsey Sharman arizan etc but I value the wings less.
Chipper- Cousy, Mikan, Rocha, Wanzer, Arizin.
5. Is Vern Mikkelsen worth the contract that Greene has him on (and for that matter, the very high valuation Greeme has placed on him)? For reference- it's $52,716,612 over 7 years, starting at $5,250,000.
DBW- Ahh, Vern is the role player that Marty drafted in the top lotto. I forgot this guy existed. I'm not sure why Greeme offered him such a long deal but the per-year salary is completely manageable.
Broph- Ehh, i dont like committing to players for long term that arent elite, rather have the flexibility. Its a nice cheap contract, which is good, but I dont see anything particularly special about Vern. he rebounds, shoots outside but, locking up long term a player that doesnt do anything to separate himself from the pack? not for me.
NYB- Never is. He’s a decent role player but a 7 yr deal is pretty surprising to me. He’s a solid rebounder and can get decent offensive shooting percentages but don’t love that deal overall. I can see him eventually hitting the Brock Call levels of annoyance.
Greeme- no brainer for me. Elite %s for a big. Elite post d. Low tos. Good rebounder. Even gets 2 stocks per 36. Not an elite player but a very good one.
chipper- I love me some Vern. That being said- I can see why some people hate this contract.
6. We saw a number of signups to the forum recently after someone sent a mass PM in the old UOSL league for people to join. Is there one past GM that has not been in this version of BBS that you'd like to see join?
DBW- I still don't have a clue what happened with the mass e-mail but it was cool seeing a bunch of old names on the boards. It looks like none of them signed up for the waitlist though SMH! I'd be cool with any old veteran pulling up but I'm partial to my NDSL guys. Traves and elcheato in particular would be dope.
Broph- Uhhh, Repole, cause I enjoyed our bs about ratings and fbb theory and shit. Also, he was really good, so I would have to go with him, since I assume he has not been part of this league yet
NYB- Not sure. I’m legit drawing a blank. I was in so many leagues back in the day I’d likely confuse UOSL and NBN.
Greeme- aar by far. Good guy. Good gm. Easy to trade with.
chipper- Traves, aar, elcheato. All good GMs.
7. If you could switch rosters with a team, what team would you switch with? You keep no players that you have and you get all of the other team's players and contracts and cut salary.
DBW- I wouldn't want to switch but I really like the Timberwolves. He accelerated his rebuild through great moves like acquiring Mel Payton, getting the pick to draft Billy Kenville, signing and flipping Jax. He's gonna have a lot of youth to work with when he comes off his rebuild.
Broph- I just got here, so I kinda like the team I have, I have a lot of young crappy players, picks, its great, but outside that, Im a big time fan of building around an elite big, so I would go with the Mavericks, just because I would love to have Red Rocha
NYB- The Rockets. A lot of youth and picks to play and mt ke moves with. Those Spurs picks are looking like straight gold right now. Plus the youth they already have, they should be set for a while.
Greeme- nets- I live the nets and like a challenge
Chipper- The Wolves so I could get Payton back.
8. Name a player that you've traded in the last 3-5 seasons that you regret trading.
DBW- Mack Drexel for Holland and some picks... I put a lot of effort into working out that horrible deal. I couldn't secure the SFs I wanted with Mack and picks, so I figured getting Holland would be an easier flip. Holland looked like really good scorer with some stocks that was being held back some so I figured if I couldn't flip him, I'd be perfectly fine keeping him. Well... turns out Holland wasn't that good and never improved again. My bad... reign on top was short like leprechauns.
Broph- uhhh, none, Ive traded only Braun thats notable, and Im happy with that one. Everybody else I just kinda needed to dump.
NYB- Jordan Marks I think. I traded him in that Zion deal and I pretty much treated him like a contract instead of an actual asset. Deal helped me reset but Marks eventually had a great season for Minny. Would’ve been nice to flip him then.
Greeme- bags. Already miss him.
Chipper- Mel Payton. End of speech.
9. Name 3 players currently in BBS that you think have the best names and why.
DBW- LOVE Monk Meineke. It just sounds fire. I always liked Wembanyama, it sounds cool. I also like Wat Mitsaka, sounds cool too.
Broph- Dick Surhoff, it just sounds dirty, and he is on my team. Devereux St. Cloud is great, it just sounds like an elite player, and he is, so it fits. Finally Dick Knostman, which is very close to Dick Knotsman, which sounds unpleasant. Dick Groat gets honorable mention. I felt I need to put Cloud in here, but really the three Dicks are best.
NYB- Dick Throat Groat has to be the best right now. I know it’s not his actual name but it has stuck. It deserves it’s spot.
Noble Herrero has always been a pretty unique one.
Zippy Morocco is top notch. Any time a player can be called upon with his first name and you know who it is, you made it.
Greeme- wah wah, st cloud and loreno longestnameever
Chipper- Wah Wah by far, and then Deveraux St. Cloud and Dick Groat.
10. "Atlanta, Georgia changed my life" is an expression commonly used by a lot of people from Atlanta because of how much the city means to them. What city in your life has "changed your life"?
DBW- I hate to be like this but I don't think I have anything for this question lol
Broph- I can't really say any tbh, though I am in the process of moving to Redmond, Oregon, so I guess we go with that? Technically I've changed my life by moving there, so that might fit the criteria (or will be, house being built)
NYB- I’ve only lived in the Bronx. I did spend some time in other countries like PR and Ecuador but my life has been in the Bronx. I do cherish it because at the end of the day, it helped me become who I am and what I want to do going forward.
Greeme- Jerusalem. Greatest city in the world.
Chipper- The phrase is accurate. Atlanta, Georgia changed my life.
1. The usual question- what's your thoughts on your team this season? Are playoffs a possibility or no?
DeeperThanSims - I think we'll make the playoffs as a 5th seed. We started 3-5 and have a crappy differential but I think that was my DC and not my players.
