Hello friends and welcome to DB's Roundtable!
1. How did your offseason go? What's your thoughts on your team this season? Are playoffs a possibility or you tanking?
Braz - couldn’t have gone worse. Had cap for the third year in a row and only lost my own guy who i had a higher offseason on. Sucks free agency can’t really be replicated to any realism in fbb. I’m shooting for playoffs as long as I got cloud. Him and miles are fine. Let’s go for the one or two seed if we can hold off hornets and Knicks.
greeme - meh. I wanted to rebuild but nobody was offering anything. Wahwah was maxed and I moved miles so competing was out of the question. I got the Pistons 37 which should be nice.i finally moved bags and like all the guys I got but I would have rather gotten one or 2 guys. I probably could still make the playoffs if I don't make any moves but I'm leaning towards moving guys if the deals are there.
nybombers3 - Offseason was whatever. Kind of annoying that Walton is still on my roster but whatever. I'll move him next season if need be. At this point, I'd like to tank but we'll see. I'm enjoying seeing the role guys on my team like Herm and Polson doing pretty well. Conley and Foust are playing pretty solidly. Makes seasons like this more bearable.
chipper - Bah. Mixed bag. I liked trading for Arizin last year. I liked getting off Kuminga's contract and (recently) Augmon. I did NOT like trading Payton. That was a mistake and I regretted it instantly. I doubt I make the playoffs in the East, but if everyone on my team stays healthy and we get on a weird run, it's possible. I don't think we have the bigs to make it though.
2. As of right now, CY NEXT YEAR looks like Svedda and DB...along with the Lakers and Pacers if they don't make it this year? What do you think? Do you think all make it?
Braz- damn it’s been quiet but 4 teams at once will be hard and in the east will be impossible unless teams give it a try to tank. I think we are coming up on better drafts and bucks just reset so maybe they trend that way. West will prob be fine. Not very concerned about Nanz but it Ramsey doesn’t pan out holding iverson and kuminga with 75% of cap is not ideal for cy. I’d dump iverson now.
Greeme - 4 teams is rough. Somehow everybody makes cy. Cue Joe cocker.
(By with a little help from my friends) All I need is my buddies
Andy - Cavs have some good talent. Just need to make it work. If they miss out this year, another lotto should really help cement their CY spot
Blazers are interesting. They have the PG spot locked down. Ramsey should be their SG next yr tbh, especially if they keep Kum. Need cheap salary guys like that. They desperately need frontcourt talent. Might as well dump Ivo now if possible. I think they can make it considering they have solid assets past Frank.
Pacers just need a PG. They did trade for a half decent one but still. They need to find a more legit one.
Lakers I think will make it this yr and avoid CY. If they don't then idk. They will have cap but they do have holes to fill. Solomon is a bit of a disappointment all things considered.
Chipper - I do think all of them make it. Svedda, even with the outward appearance of not caring, is the most successful GM in this version of BBS and will make it. DB has a good team and will make it. I didn't think the Pacers were up for their CY yet, but they do have a lot of talent and I think they make it. And Nanz will pull through as usual.
3. Do you think these drafts have made it tougher for rebuilding teams? Especially when people completely deplete their rosters?
Braz - that’s a risk with tanking. Can’t cut to 0 assets. I ended up with Mel out of a trade and I wasn’t even a tanking team. Instead of tanking just trade for guys you already like. Retool. There are many ways to get younger and better. I think the classes are fine but if you don’t make your guy seem valuable by playing him right and or hyping him he will have lesss value. I think few GMs do a good job of showcasing talent while tanking. Like if your gunna run slow inside your rookie who’s a wing prob won’t do too well and thus will have less value
Greeme - the deeper drafts means people can compete longer bc good players fall farther. There is so much depth now that teams should be built differently but it takes people time to adjust.
Andy - I think it's a bit tougher. Between not truly knowing these players, spencer playing around a bit more with ratings vs actual production and the lack of talent at the end of drafts it can be harder. That said, you shouldn't just rebuild through drafts. As long as you keep that in mind, it's fine.
Chipper - Nah. The value is there in the notes. You just have to know what you're looking for and stick to a plan.
4. What are two things you would like to see more of from Spencer as he builds these drafts? Share your thoughts for any improvements below.
Braz - N/A
Greeme - I would like top loaded drafts when I'm tanking and deep ones when I'm not. Mostly I just want inflation controlled. I would like less stock monsters.
Andy - I feel like the end of the lotto has been a bit of a bust show. idk why and when I finish my article I'll have a better look into that but seems like way for me. Same for end of the draft. Not expecting any stars there but even with role guys, it seems to be a bit of a lack spot there.
Chipper - I think he's doing a fine job given what he has to deal with on a daily basis. The drafts seem fine to me- but I may have come into the league after he seemingly course corrected, from my understanding, with how he was building these old-timers. And the age thing seems to have been fixed as well.
5. Do you think any contract is untradeable or it's just a matter of time. Anyone can move anything?
Braz - we’ve seen RJ and Kuminga moved so nothing is impossible. As long as there is a team who just reset and can take an asset I think it can be moved. All it takes is 1 Gm. I’d be worried if we keep signing guys to RJ and kuminga deals tho. More then 5 of those in the leagues would slow down trades worse then that evergreen shipping container that got stuck
Greeme - it depends what you mean by untraceable. If you mean are there contracts which are worth less than exps then yes, plenty of contracts are untradeable. If you mean that they can't be traded even if you add a rookie Jordan then no, no contract is untradeable.
Andy - Nope. Any deal can be moved as long as you are willing to be patient and/or add assets. Kum moved, twice. Once with Arizin and once with picks along with another overpaid dude. Augmon was moved for expiring. RJ was moved with a pick. Cade went in that deal. Any deal can be moved.
Chipper - I am living proof that anyone can move anything. I've got out from LeBron Johnson, Kuminga, and Augmon from the last season to now.
6. What can we do to improve the GM waitlist overall? How can we get more people interested in joining such an outdated game?
Braz - be welcoming to people and maybe tag them if they are active on boards. Ask ppl to be co GMs and recruit. It’s hard but we been able to stay afloat with a very solid core group.
Greeme - just messenging people once in awhile. If you hit the right gm at the right time he will come back.
Andy - Not sure there's a ton we can do. It's an old ass game. You know what you get here. Take that and the fact that most of us that were teenagers back then are now grown ass adults, it's difficult.
Chipper - Just need to bring back the old guys and we'll be fine. I like how it looks right now- seems like some of these older ones will join up.
I do think that with it being an outdated game- in the future it might be worth looking into the new FBB or JSB or BasketballGM or something as an option. Soon it's possible that the uploads won't work anymore due to some fundamental change of how internet works- you never know. Javscript got killed, so maybe something in FBBs upload code gets killed too.
7. Who is your favorite player in the league right now 25 and under? Who is your favorite player 26-29? Who is your favorite player 30 or higher?
Braz - Mel Hutchins, St Cloud and Zion. It’s all love here.
Greeme - cousy. Insane talent. Bags - people don't realize how good he is. They will soon when he helps play out of rd 1. George brown- knew of those guys I have been trying to get for years.
Andy - Bob Cousy. I'd like to sign him this offseason. Just saying. Koa Peat in the middle because he's so fucking good and I feel like he should be in his 30's, not 28. Deandre Ayton for over 30 just because I have no idea how he's still here.
Chipper - 25 and under- Bob Cousy. Easy answer.
26-29- Devereux St. Cloud. Also an easy answer.
30+- Bobby Wanzer. A classic PG.
8. What is one thing you look for when you draft 2nd rounders?
Braz - either raw with high potential (we hope) to see if they pop in tc or at least serviceable at 1 thing. Few years ago I took ward Williams and now he’s a solid rebounder.
Greeme - I don't remember the last time I drafted a second rounder. If I did I would look for a big who could be camped into a serviceable backup or a young pg with high pot.
Andy - A chance. A glimmer of hope I can +24 someone even though I usually don't and turn them into something. It's a crapshoot.
Chipper - If they have notes- I'm drafting them almost always. If they have a high potential still- that's the next category I look at.
9. In your opinion, what is the most important way to AC/RC a young player?
Braz - if it’s a non big scoring if it’s a big blocks. For me it’s that simple.
Greeme - I rarely have enough camps the idea is to camp early attributes which could be elite and to camp later average attributes.
Andy - I like my bigs to play D and reb. I need my guards to score. If a big already has elite inside then I'll mess around with it then. My SF's, I'd love to play D, rebound and score some. Kind of an in-between.
Chipper - Stocks are good to use always, and then scoring. That's usually what I stick with.
10. GETTING TO KNOW GMS: Where have you traveled to recently or plan to travel to? Vacations only!
Braz - Aruba in December was amazing. Got a really good deal through redweek on someone’s time share. Next vacation im going to Brazil in May. It’s been 3 years. I kid you not my cousins have combined for 12 babies since. Excited
Greeme - prague. Really nice place. Very cold. Highly recommended going though for the history.
Andy - My wife wants to do a road trip from NYC to Florida this summer. Should be interesting. She about to became a guidance counselor for the DOE so she's loving that she'll be home in the summer. Seems like she wants to visit varies places on this trip. We did something like this before but went to South Carolina and road back. Stopped at like Maryland and Virgina. That's the plan for the summer I think. We shall see. I used to love my family trips to Ecuador. Especially Galapagos Island. An amazing area.
Chipper - I'm in Chattanooga for the day with the family, so that counts! I'm doing this at night in a hotel bathroom so as not to wake my wife and to make sure this roundtable gets posted and the one I did gets posted. At some point this summer, we're going to go to Ireland to visit my grandma and all the rest of my family. I've been almost 40 times (mom is from there so yeah), but love it each and every time.
