A drat day in review Top 20
Well Without further frivolousness lets start breaking down these picks and see how the draft panned out
Well Without further frivolousness lets start breaking down these picks and see how the draft panned out
1 Milwaukee Bucks (from Nets) - Bob Pettit
Elite inside and midrange. Good handles and post defense. Very good rebounder. Some stocks.
Was on everyone’s board to go number 1. Best player in the draft.
A+
2 Seattle Super Sonics - Dick Guerrin
Elite upside. Very good scorer from all over. Solid handles. Some stocks. Good rebounder for a wing.
A GM could be tricky with Dick, move him to SF have him practice rebounding NON STOP (+16) and play him at the SG, might just be able to have one of the best SG in the league that way.
A
3 Golden State Warriors - Red Kerr
Solid. Can score inside and from mid. Solid handles. Some stocks. Good rebounder. Elite strength.
Kerr looks to be the 2nd best big in the draft. It will be interesting to see how he gets into the rotation with Damon and Jalen, or will one of them be dealt to make room for the rookie
A
4 Houston Rockets - Gene Shue
Poor Houston dropping 3 spots, as this draft started to get to splitting hairs right about now who should be drafted. Time will tell if Blue Suede Shue was the better pick over Slick ‘Rick’ Leonard
B+
5 Minnesota Timberwolves - Don McLane
I love Don, but I’m also afraid he could be a reach. Camps are going to be important for Don to be successful and worthy of the 5th overall pick. Gotta give Eddie balls though for going after the player he thought was BPA
B
6 Milwaukee Bucks - Slick Leonard
Andy had the joy of 2 top 6 picks and he may have gotten two good opening day starters/ Slick Rick is gonna be a baller and run the show in Milwaukee. Not only that but he was def the BPA at this point in the draft
A
7 Hornets (from Los Angeles Lakers) - Dick Garmaker
A wanna be Lavender Gooms but without the D or the elite inside. Should be a solid player though, and probably would flourish in an inside or balanced orientated offence.
B
8 Boston Celtics - Bob Mattick
This was a reach pick HOPING he will develop. Was not the BPA by any stretch. Might be developed enough after Break is CY’d for the next GM. Will not be an impact player anytime soon. Did Break get advice from the ex GM? Maybe it’s a curse and Boston just sucks at mid lotto picks
C-
9 Boston Celtics (from Cavaliers) - Larry Costello
Sadly, at this point Larry was either the BPA or close to it. For all his upsides his inability to board or defend will cause him to be just another PG, and will likely be close to 3 TO a game.
C+
10 Washington Wizards - Lee Morton
Notes say he’s a TO prone and might be decent at scoring. Reach pick, but he has upside and JAH has the patience of a monk, so maybe one day…
C
11 Philadelphia 76ers - Dick Rosenthall
Dicks notes read as he should be a PF not a SF. At SF he will be lit up by any good scoring wing, but will be a + rebounder. Draft grade is hard to judge on this guy, but lums might have got a good PF in a sneaky pick.
B+
12 Utah Jazz (from Portland Trail Blazers) - Art Spoelstra
Jazz traded down and still got a good pick in Art. Art isn’t splashy but he will go in and be a solid contributor for every minute he plays
A-
13 New York Knicks (from Pistons) - Gus Lovett
“Lovett is a good passer. He jumps well. His jumpshot is higher then his 3 point shot.”
Based on his notes, he will be low volume shooter and a good defender, but a liability at PF on the boards. Skillz being Skillz here, and I’m guessing he will get some love on the boards with camps, but still seems a little like a reach.
C+
14 Milwaukee Bucks(from Clippers)- Red Morrison
The Guy Boston should have picked with the 8th pick goes at 14 and should be able to either be a great backup 4/5 or even a decent starter.
A
15 Philadelphia 76ers (from Nuggets) - Werner Kellen
Drafted for his potential? Will not be an impact player anytime soon.
D-
16 Phoenix Suns (from Grizzlies) - Red Davis
The world Champs get lucky people stopped looking for BPAs and get a solid 4/5 backup that can cover in case of injuries to those positions too.
A
17 Houston Rockets (from Spurs) - Jim Paxton
Cant wait to see how Jim works out as his notes are interesting.
B+
18 Houston Rockets (from Magic) - Frank Sevvy
Guess Houston missed this guy has no volume. A SG that never shoots, and isn’t an elite defender just doesn’t bring any value to the team.
D
19 Dallas Mavericks - Charles Kraak
"Elite jumpshot and handles. Some stocks. Elite leaper. and a solid Perimeter defender"
Not only the BPA at this point, also fills a hole the Mav’s had last season. Can he be as good as Paul Hicks? Guy wont shoot the ball EVER, but hopefully that wont be an issue. Only time will tell
B+
20 Chicago Bulls - Ron Perry
Play drafting a PG with handle issues? Not sure what the play was here, I guess +24 and hope the pot takes off in TC
