1 Milwaukee Bucks (from Nets) - Bob Pettit PF 6'9'' 205 22 B+ C+ C B B A
Notes: Elite inside and midrange. Good handles and post defense. Very good rebounder. Some stocks.
2 Seattle Super Sonics - Dick Guerrin SG 6'4'' 195 22 B B B B C+ A
Notes: Elite upside. Very good scorer from all over. Solid handles. Some stocks. Good rebounder for a wing.
Grades: A
The consensus picks. Pettit will be the most valuable player in the league soon, while Guerrin will be a low end franchise player.
3 Golden State Warriors - Red Kerr C 6'9'' 230 22 C+ C D+ B B+ A
Notes: Solid. Can score inside and from mid. Solid handles. Some stocks. Good rebounder. Elite strength.
Grade: A
Spence said in the draft notes thread that Kerr had good blocks, which cemented him at #3 for me. B+ boards, good blocks, and positive notes about his offense makes him an elite prospect. If I had #2, I would’ve tried to trade down for #3 and grab something nice along the way.
4 Houston Rockets - Gene Shue PG 6'2'' 170 23 C+ B- B- C+ C A
Notes: Good scorer. Solid inside and good midrange. Handles are solid. Some steals. Good rebounder for a PG.
Grade: B+
Shue has a great foundation and will be a B-/A-/A-/B+/C point guard soon. Solid handles and inside mean he’ll probably be second tier rather than dominant at PG, but he’s a safe bet to be a top 10 PG in his prime.
5 Minnesota Timberwolves - Don McLane PF 6'4'' 220 22 B C- C B C+ B
Notes: Elite inside scorer. Some stocks. Okay rebounder. Handles are just mediocre.
Grade: B+
Spence said in the notes thread that he has good blocks. Very few prospects who went after him compete with elite inside scoring and good blocks. McLane is borderline B- rebounding too. Has a chance to be a really good starting big, but the jury’s out until we see his handles, jump shot, and rebounding.
6 Milwaukee Bucks - Slick Leonard PG 6'3'' 185 23 C C+ B B C A
Notes: Elite handles, quickness and steals. Very good rebounder for a PG. Okay inside and midrange scorer.
Grade: B-
I worry about this guy being Kody Augmon. Honestly, I find elite handles and steals and very good rebounding so alluring at PG, but C/C+ scoring with okay inside and midrange puts him way behind the current crop of PGs. I think this is the kind of player Spence gives nice potential, but he needs a ton of development as a scorer.
7 Hornets (from Los Angeles Lakers) - Dick Garmaker SG 6'3'' 200 22 B- B- B- C+ C- A
Notes: Very good inside and midrange scorer. Solid handles. Some steals.
Grade: A-
He’s definitely not perfect, but he has great scoring notes and is a near lock for B+/A- scoring, and he’s a borderline C rebounder. I’m not in love with him, but he’s a major offensive prospect.
8 Boston Celtics - Bob Mattick C 6'11'' 225 21 C+ C D+ C+ C+ A
Notes: Good upside. Some stocks. Jumpshot and rebounding are ok.
Grade: C-
Spence also said he’s a good jumper with mediocre handles. With good upside and camps, he has a chance to be solid. I just don’t see any skills here that would justify using a mid-lotto on him.
9 Boston Celtics (from Cavaliers) - Larry Costello PG 6'1'' 186 23 C+ B+ C+ C D+ B
Notes: Very good scorer from all 3 levels. Good handles. Doesn't defend or rebound much.
Grade: B+
Very few players in the class compete with Costello in terms of development or talent. He’s in the mold of Kyrie and Wat, and if he were a C rebounder, he’d be the fourth pick. As is, he’s a borderline D rebounder. He doesn’t need scoring or handling camps, though, so I’d throw +24 at his rebounding and strength and see where it gets you. Goog pick.
10 Washington Wizards - Lee Morton SG 6'2'' 175 19 B C+ C- C C A
Notes: Good upside. Decent scorer from inside and midrange. Handles may need work.
Grade: C
Spence added upside notes to this class and I think it affected quite a few picks. I don’t think potential is any higher for this class; I think “good upside” would refer to nearly every A scouted potential prospect we’ve seen, and without the note I think a guy like this goes in the 20s. Don’t think he has a chance to start.
11 Philadelphia 76ers - Dick Rosenthal SF 6'5'' 205 24 B+ C D+ B B- B
Notes: Very good inside scorer. Good rebounder. Solid post defender. Some steals. Not very quick. Handling is just okay.
Grade: C
Very good inside scoring and good rebounding are nice, but he’s 24, he’s bad, I’m not sure he has a position. Spence later said he has a mediocre jump shot and will shoot threes, which makes him a really bad shooter. Also said he has low blocks. This kind of guy works at SF if he has a great jump shot and good stocks, but both are absent here, and he sounds like he’d do 2+ turnovers as a starter. I wouldn’t touch him.
Just want to pause here and note that this is the yield from year 1 of tanking for Lums because he sat on Gabe and Bronny for no reason. Not good.
12 Utah Jazz (from Portland Trail Blazers) - Art Spoelstra PF 6'9'' 220 22 C+ C- C- B- B- B
Notes: Solid inside, midrange and handles. Some stocks. Solid rebounder.
Grade: B
Looks like a Charles Bassey or Irv Rothenberg type. Nothing special, but solid everywhere. I'm thinking he can do 11-11 on solid percentages with 2.5+ stocks and 1 turnover. A quality third big. Let’s camp him and love him.
13 New York Knicks (from Pistons) - Gus Lovett
Notes: None, but Spence said he has some stocks and good handles, passing, and jumping.
Grade: C+
Seems like has a path to 2-3 stocks with B rebounding. Maybe Skillz thinks he can deliver stocks and rebounding with low turnovers at SF, but if he isn’t a scorer, I think you can find this kind of guy with your MLE and camp him a la Malik Webber.
Notes: Elite inside and midrange. Good handles and post defense. Very good rebounder. Some stocks.
2 Seattle Super Sonics - Dick Guerrin SG 6'4'' 195 22 B B B B C+ A
Notes: Elite upside. Very good scorer from all over. Solid handles. Some stocks. Good rebounder for a wing.
Grades: A
