2038 CY Squid Game – 76ers and Celtics
Adopting the theme from the 2021 Korean survival drama show, Squid Game, we’ll take a look at two teams entering this year’s CY, the 76ers and Celtics. We’ll take a look at how Lumley and Break got here and what their odds of survival or perishing will be this season.
Philadelphia 76ers
GM- Lumley
2037 Record- 17-65
Analysis – Following three winning seasons in Philly, Lums decided to tear down after the 2034 season which began with the infamous trade of Gabe Jackson, Walt Davis, Joe Holland to Denver for Cade Cunningham, shitty filler and the Nuggets 36 1st which ended up being Werner Keller. The trade was universally thrashed by most as an atrocious deal for the Sixers where the Nuggets picked up a former top 5 pick in Davis AND Gabe Jackson who was flipped for Kiyan Anthony later on and all it cost them was a mid-round pick and Cunningham who still had a year left on his deal.
When accepting the trade, Lums stated, “3rd Frenzy Fuck it we confirm makes us worse the rest of this year and next. Cade is huge expiring next year.hate losing young Davis and my boy Jackson. So hopefully this doesn’t put Denver over this year and helps them next season lol. Its a gamble.”
Lums would also lose Slater Martin in free agency after giving up two firsts for him, then dumped Mack Drexel for an Indy 1st and finally got the firsts back that he gave up in the Martin deal in exchange for Jalen Hayes. The best move that Lums pulled off in this period was dealing Bronny James to the Warriors for their 2038 1st which ended up being Swede Halbrook, #6 pick in the draft. After two years of tanking, the Sixers dropped both times in lotto and ended up with Dick Rosenthal and Tom Gola, both of whom don’t seem like starter material right now but maybe they will have a good TC to change that.
Fast forward to current day, Lums was fortunate to land #1 pick in Bill Russell along with Halbrook then flipped Halbrook and PHI 40 and PHI 41 1st for George Mikan. The opportunity to pair Russell with Mikan seemed too much to pass up. They also landed Trenton Richardson for pure cap space from the Lakers which was a nice cheap pickup. As for free agency, Philly entered with about $9M in cap space after the Mikan deal but only were able to sign Winscott as filler.
As it stands now, the Sixers still need another scoring wing and need to resign Fracci to be their point guard but not 100% sure if they have enough firepower to reset at this point.
Squid Game Character Comp- Oh Il-nam aka ‘Player 001’
We’ll call Lums the old man who’s slowly dying who prefers to play the Squid Game/BBS instead of going out in the world. Like Lums talking about the old BBS days, Yeong-Su talks about the playing child games as a kid and the nostalgia of still playing it today. Lums has been playing this as long as many of the OGs in this league so respect there. He loves to play with fire though and go through all the obstacles or ‘games’ to live on. With that said, he has an advisory council he’ll lean on for advice from time to time but doesn’t mean he won’t go against their wishes and do his own thing. Lums is gonna be Lums at the end of the day.
CY Fate prediction- Resets. 44-38. 8th or 9th seed right now. I believe he finds a wing with Gola and his 39 and don’t think he perishes here though – Lums has another chapter to write in his BBS career.
Boston Celtics
GM- Break
2037 Record- 36-46
Analysis – How we get to Break’s 4th CY is a little bit of a journey. After his last post with the NJ Nets, he stuck around for a year as Marty’s assistant then picked up the Celtics job for the second time after Brian stepped down halfway during 2035. Many speculate Brian was on the way to his own CY and used this as a tactic to avoid it and instead passing the buck back to Break. In Brian’s defense, break took over a team with all of their 1sts but a couple bad contracts in LeBron Johnson, Dayo Balewa and Tyrone Iverson. Still, not the worse situation to inherit.
Break was able to hit one of his two lottos in 2036 with stud point guard Larry Costello but whiffed a bit on Bob Mattick. A season later, the C’s took big man Guy Sparrow at the #6 pick. Later in the season, he dealt Sparrow, Mattick and Holup for Rip Gish in LA in order to make a playoff push or reset which ultimately fell a bit short. Now, in the last draft, the C’s dealt their #9 pick overall for Alex Groza and two other future 1sts.
As it stands now, Break has the best situation of any CY team currently. He adds an elite big man to a 36 win team last year, along with a top young point guard, decent depth along with Jax Bryant and Wah Wah Jones at the wings. Barring any injuries or rough start, the Celtics should have a strong showing this season.
Squid Game Character comparison- Seong Gi-Hun aka ‘Player 456’
Break used to act pretty brash and aggressive on the boards in the beginning and he’s toned it down a bit since then. He’ll still snap from time to time but 3 CYs has a way of humbling a man. I think he’s learned that sometimes it’s best to be more strategic with his moves than impulsive just trying to trade because everyone else is doing it. Like Break in BBS, Seong has had a rough time in the world but happens to find himself being fortunate at this CY right now. This guy gets a lot of shit at the end of the day but should make it this time.
CY Fate prediction – 45-37. Resets and makes playoffs. Break carrys on until 2039 aside from any unexpected setbacks.
