Well, here we go! Below is the roundtable none of you have been waiting for.
1. What's your outlook for this season for your team?
Von : I am trying to get to 42 wins this season without doing anything too crazy to the team because I think we look really good for long term success. Dez Davis has been a little bit of a disappointment and I don't want Baylor at PF long term. We had a really bad first sim where I forgot my DC (on vacation) but I have cut my point differential from -14 to about -1.2 so we look to be on the up and up. I think we have a couple moves to the DC that I might make that can make us better. Baylor might be a 3-4-5 super sub here pretty soon and I might Olajuwon to a super sub in lieu of Garmaker due to his rebounding ability.
autumn harold : I'll see if the opportunities are there to contend but I'm planning to build around Heinsohn. Think he's a better Groza. Probably means I deal Sharman for a retool package. May also move Hayes and Edwards for retooling pieces once I lock up a reset.
Stevie B : Still trying to compete at a high level. Our TC must’ve not been very good under the hood because we have simply looked pedestrian thus far. Peat/Hagan haven’t been great. Eddy Mac hasn’t exactly looked great either. All my guys shooting shitty. Just weird and quite frankly dumb.
nybombers3 : No idea. Truly just going by on a day to day basis hoping for the best overall. I guess we'll see what end up happening overall but really yeah. I'm just kind of here at this point.
chipper : We suck. That's all there is to it. Trying not to end up with the best lottery odds in order to not give pig another top lotto.
2. These questions are being sent out as of Sim 2. Currently, the 4 CY teams are 13-12 (Boston), 12-11 (Philly), 8-14 (Rockets), and 6-20 (Warriors). None of those teams are currently in the playoff spaces. Will any of them make it, and why?
Von : Celtics look pretty good on paper right now and had a really good sim. I am not too worried about them. I don't like the Sixers DC's as of late, I think there is a better team there. Fracci looks like he is dead with almost 4 TOPG as a non option? They need to move Iverson to SF, move Richardson to a super sub and get one better front court depth piece at a minimum. They have 5 teams around them that are currently not in the playoffs looking to compete, they need to make a big move. Rockets don't look great right now but they are only 2.5 games back and are making deals to compete. They need to figure out what the PG situation is and I think they will be fine. I think GSW is dead in the water.
autumn harold : I like every team but the Warriors to reset. The Rockets need a point guard, sure, but very hard to imagine Francis/Monk/Worm/Potts doesn't get there. I would *really* like Broph to try Shue at PG again. Even with a handling issue, he's a nice scorer and rebounder, and the Rockets should be able to afford turnovers at PG with Francis and Monk on the wing. It'll be close.
Sixers are a lock barring a big injury (although they probably have their 50-day healer). Best starting bigs in the league, and Kiyan is a top three-ish SG. I would love for Lums to upgrade his bench though.
Celts are very good and well-rounded. Great on the glass, great blocking, scorers everywhere. They'd be looking at 54+ wins if they had a Javi type off the bench.
Warriors, just go the fuck away please.
Stevie B : Celtics and 76ers are fine. Break just needed to find a DC which he looks to have, and so he should be fine moving forward and barring any horrible injury luck. Lums has barely played any home games thus far. That team is good. I don’t think he’ll have any issues making it. Jr is pretty much done unless he makes some drastic changes and catches fire. He will need a miracle. Broph’s complacency is incredible to me. There’s no way I would’ve ever entered CY with that PG situation. He’s not going to make it unless he figures that situation out.
nybombers3 : Philly should easily. I like their line up overall now. Boston had a nice sim. I think they'll be up and down overall but they'll be fine. Houston and Warriors are interesting. They both got their PG's now. Hopefully, especially for GSW, it doesn't take long to make it work overall. They need all the wins they can get. I can see the Rockets nabbing a spot. Warriors may have to go on a sick run to win 42. Ultimately, I think 3 out of 4 get it done.
chipper : Warriors are screwed. I think the Rockets and Sixers make it, but not sure if break will make it, he needs to change his DC up.
3. Paul Arizin- the range of opinions on him varies from GM to GM. Is he a great player? Way overrated? Replaceable?
Von : I made comparisons about Arizin to BBS Paul Pierce who in my mind was a cancer on most teams he played on. He's career negative stocks, he probably gets maybe 26-28 PPG on a good team. I think the only position he can really play is the 3 as a 3rd option because of the aforementioned issues. Doesn't really have the intangibles to play the 4 the way most guys build a team. I don't think he is overrated because most people didn't rate him high to begin with. He is certainly replaceable.
autumn harold : He is not good. If he's in a better offense and asked to do less, his shooting splits should improve, but very hard to like a guy with bad splits and negative stocks. Even if he looks better, he doesn't have the stocks or splits to be elite.
Stevie B : Incredibly overrated. His biggest strengths are shooting volume and rebounding at the wing. What good is it to have shooting volume if you can’t make anything? Also, his stock:turnover ratio is horrid. I don’t really rate him as a winning piece here.
nybombers3 : He's a good player who fits on a specific set of teams in a specific set of roles. He should not be your main guy. He should not play at the 4. I think he's fine at either the 3 or 2. I think for me, on a lower turnover team that doesn't need him as a top guy, he would thrive. He'd still turn it over a bunch but you live with that if the rest of the team doesnt turn it over a lot.
chipper : I still love Paul, but he had his flaws, namely his turnovers. If his turnovers were 1 less, he'd be a star that no one could argue with (yeah, his stocks could be higher too, I get it).
4. Is Bill Russell already the most valuable player in the league?
Von : Without question.
autumn harold : Yeah. No one will be close to him until Wilt joins.
Stevie B : Yes.
nybombers3 : Don't think there's a doubt about it right now. You would not move Russell for any one player. Hell, the Heat were offered you high value studs and that was barley considered.
chipper : Yeah, pretty unanimous. Dude is ridiculous, and with the +10 potential boost, he's going to be better for longer too.
5. What type of player in this league is the most easily replaceable? It's a very broad, open-ended question so interpret it as you wish.
Von : Scoring wings are probably the easiest to obtain and replace.
autumn harold : The retro drafts have thinned out the league so much. I don't think this is the most salient concept right now. Used to be able to overlook PG and/or wing scoring and know you could get it cheap along the way. Not the case right now. I think most people would default to a scoring wing because bigs and PGs are so valuable, but scoring wings aren't cheap or abundant right now, either, so I think that answer is really about what people value the least and therefore consider easiest to acquire. IDK! Lots of really underwhelming perimeter players starting these days.
Stevie B : Great question, yet a tough one. I believe scoring wings is maybe the best answer, but I also remember a 4-5 seasons ago how hard they were to come by when I was trying to land one. I also think a good PG is tough to come by these days. The market is showing that. I’ll still say scoring wings, but man…Spence has truly done a good job with this file. It’s legitimately tough to put together an elite team here.
nybombers3 : Most easily replaceable, eh? Scoring wings I think. I've seen nobodies go ahead and put up 20 a game on good scoring percentages. PG's tough. I think another position that's hard is SF. Plenty of them around but with how much value is put on rebounding, I don't think there are a ton of truly studly SF's out there.
chipper : High-volume wings it seems. There's a lot out there.
6. Looking ahead to next season, the teams that look to be at risk of entering their CY are the Hornets and the Spurs (the Clippers would be if they don't reset this year, but all signs point to them making it easily). Which of those do you think will make it?
Von : I have way too many assets not to be a force next year. Only thing that might stop me is activity from making the necessary moves or just a brutal TC campagin. Royal will have a lot of cap and a good pick this year (potentially 2) and he can usually string up a bunch of wins to get by CY so I am sure he can get it done if he is active.
autumn harold : Both will be fine. Hornets are a no-brainer. Spurs have 40 mil cap and a top three pick. Royal knows how to scratch out 42 with that.
Stevie B : Hornets easily make it if it gets to that point. I think Pig wants to avoid it, though. Didn’t realize Royal was back in CY already, lol. A tale as old as time. That one is 50/50, but he has the cap space and draft capital to put together a winning team. That’ll be VERY interesting as always.
nybombers3 : Spurs in CY already? Wild. I think both would be fine. Hornets may even reset this season. Royal has made shit work before in CY. He'll be fine.
chipper : Hornets may reset this year, and if they don't, they will next year without a problem. Spurs may be in trouble if they mess up their cap, but if FA goes according to plan, he'll be fine.
7. Steals or blocks- what's more important to building a winning BBS team and why?
Von : In theory it should be steals because steals always have a 100% return rate for the opposite team where blocks could be swatted out of bounds and the team on the offensive gets the ball back. I am not sure how it works in FBB but the difference is probably negligible.
autumn harold : I think this is hard to unpack because high blocks typically go hand-in-hand with other elite frontcourt play, which is the most important thing in FBB. But give me blocks because I think it affects opponent FG% on plays that don't result in blocks.
Stevie B : I’ll lean blocks based off the findings of Broph, but I was on team steals before that. I think they’re both incredibly important, though.
nybombers3 : I always wanted more steals but I'm starting to slowly lean the other way. Seems like blocks has more of an effect then steals overall. Could be wrong though.
chipper : I'm going blocks based off of broph's findings. I was on the steals side before though, since theoretically a steal ends the opponent's possession, while a block could go out of bounds or back to the team that was shooting.
8. What real life sports team do you hate the most and why?
Von : Patriots and Dodgers because they both suck.
autumn harold : I guess the Patriots? I stopped rooting for my teams other than the Mets, and I don't really dislike any of the Mets' division rivals. Plus players move around so much that it's hard to hate teams that much. Pats have a shithead owner and coach. Fuck em.
Stevie B : Cowboys and Steeler Fans SUCK. Bottom line. Besides that, I don’t know. I love a good rivalry within all of my Philly sport teams. It’s fun.
nybombers3 : Fuck the Red Sox. Eagles. Nets. No need to explain.
chipper : Any of the Atlanta sports rivals, and then Manchester United since I'm a Liverpool fan. But we bitch-slapped them 4-0 yesterday, for a 9-0 aggregate over the season, so it was glorious.
9. I'm going to assume most, if not all of us here have smartphones. What's your favorite game on your smartphone?
Von : I don't really play games on my smartphone. I would say betting apps but that's not really a game.
autumn harold : Don't play any games on my phone other than chess, so chess.
Stevie B : Chess, no doubts about it. I play my brother everyday through the app. Whooping dat ass!
nybombers3 : idk. Don't really play much. Use to play plants vs zombies but I don't really spend a lot of free time with my phone. Like, I avoid public transportation at all costs.
chipper : I mean I play Slotomania from time-to-time, or Solitaire.
10. Got any fun plans for the summer?
Von : I am currently single right now so it's hard to plan things that I want to do. I will be in Scottsdale next week for 5 rounds of golf in the sun. I have a hotel conference in Brooklyn in June. Outside of that, don't have much going on but I am sure that will change.
autumn harold : yes my brother. Going to Asheville in May, Michigan in June, and Carlsbad (near San Diego) in July. Gonna extend the July trip and prob do LA. We visit my family in NY a lot so we'll do that too. Hoping to do a few beach weekends and a trip to Shenandoah too. We went to a bunch of Sunday Nats games last year so we'll do that. Recruiting my pals to visit us in DC too. Also gonna play a lot of live poker in VA this summer and come home in shame at 4 am, telling my wife that there's no law requiring me to disclose my losses to her. I'm looking to party.
Stevie B : We might plan to go to Hawaii this summer. Maybe Miami. Who knows. I’m a teacher, and this is my first summer off since I’m not working a 2nd job. Want to make the most of it for sure!
nybombers3 : Nothing yet. Eventually we'll plan some trips. We wanted to do legoland or some water park this week for the break but man. Shit is so damn expensive. Might do a drive down to florida and visit different states. May do that this or next year.
chipper : Going to Ireland in July for two weeks! Visiting my 90-year-old grandma and all my aunts, uncles, and cousins. Will be about my 40th (give or take 1 or 2) times visiting Ireland- highly recommended for everyone.
1. What's your outlook for this season for your team?
