Did it last year. Doing it again this year. May make it a seasonal thing. If there are any requests, I'm down to add for next season. Either way, here are the "other" award winners for this past season:
LVP:
Lavender Gooms, Seattle Supersonics
How can a player that’s putting up splits of 51/85/47 be considered for this? How can a player that, per 36, average nearly 24 ppg along with 2.5 stocks to 1.5 tpg be here? It’s twofold. First off, Gooms isn’t a typical favorite guard around these parts. He’s a guard that can’t rebound. That alone will knock him to the bench at best. He’s also is on a 3 yr deal (2 now) making 12 and 13 Mil. He’s not easily moveable next year when you have Richie making a max and it’s the season before Stokes gets his big deal. The other aspect of it is what he represents. The Sonics were the same franchise that just last year, downgraded from Wagner to Zippy essentially because of financial issues.
Least Improved Player:
Willie Naulls, New Orleans Hornets
Per/36, Naulls this season vs last season:
15.8 ppg, 11.8 rpg, 1.7 apg, 1.0 spg, 1.3 bpg, 1.1 tpg
21.6 ppg, 11.6 rpg, 1.5 apg, 0.7 spg, 1.3 bpg, 1.5 tpg
Now obviously, especially for fbb, per 36 isn’t some amazing stat but it’s interesting to see it laid out. The biggest numbers, however, aren’t laid out here which are the shooting percentages. They have dropped off a cliff. Do I expect him to get better next year? Yes. I think it’s fair to say that between the TC and the whole season, it’s been a pretty disappointing one for Naulls overall. I know, personally, I was wrong about him and that trade. Didn’t think it was terrible but man, I preferred Naulls. Such is life.
Red Auerbach Executive of the Year:
Chipper, Detroit Pistons
Let’s be honest. Go back two seasons. If you would’ve offered up the Pistons 40, you would’ve gotten massive interest for it. The fact that, we just hit the deadline and the Pistons reset is awesome. Can’t take away from the job chipper has done while not having his own pick, giving up the top pick last year and not having a massive amount of assets overall.
Isiah Thomas Executive of the Year:
Eli – Boston Celtics
I thought about making it the Sonics but that would’ve been too obvious. Plus, this can’t be a bash the Sonics article. Celtics had one DC posted, which wasn’t accepted. One trade posted. We really did not know what the plan was for the Celtics but at least we found out Eli’s hatred of pollen. So, you know, there’s that.
Gregg Pop Coach of the Year:
Break – Milwaukee Bucks
Best record in the league. What else needs to be said? My guy break is out here. The players want to play for him and it’s obvious. To matter the talent on the team, it has to be used correctly and break has been able to make it sing like a beautiful symphony. Either way, I can see break’s next chance at GMing being his best one yet.
Dick Harter Coach of the Year:
Matt – Seattle Supersonics
Not ideal. Letting Ivey start at PG all year? Not making any changes at all despite all the different injuries? Not trying different DC’s period? Matt has done a solid job of getting the young talent together but if you can’t land the jump then it doesn’t matter what you do beforehand. The Sonics should be better right now and aren’t. That roster giving up a lotto pick is pretty wild to me but we’ll see what the Sonics do going forward. I do expect the Sonics to turn it around next year. They just have way to much talent to be stuck in limbo. I think some DC tweaks alone would've put them in a better spot and sometimes, that's all it takes.
Scrub Rookie of the Year:
Harvey Schmidt, Suns
The 6th overall selection in this past season’s draft. He is not good. There really isn’t any positives here for now. He did have a decent TC I think but his numbers this season leave much to be desired. For a player that's a starter on a bad team, the fact that he couldn't go over even 10 ppg is rough. We'll see what the future holds for him though.
Joe Rice Tanker of the year:
The Golden State Warriors
It’s hard to place any one player over a team that won 8 games. 8. I originally had Ron Perry here but I just couldn’t keep him here. The Warriors have joined these teams:
2008. Orlando Magic. 9 wins.
2038. San Antonio Spurs. 9 wins
2009 Phoenix Suns. 8 wins.
As the only ones with single digit wins in a season. If you want to look at the positives, both the Magic and Suns were able to reset are having these seasons. The Suns literally reset the next season. So, there’s that. Until then, congrats to the Warriors on your greatness. It's pretty amazing how bad they truly are.
