2040 FA Day 1 Winners & Losers
Winners
Philly stand up
2040 181 76ers Sign C George Mikan for $79,438,476 over 4 years.
Analysis – The newly crowned champs in Philadelphia kept the winning going by retaining the talented big man from DePaul for another 4 years. Even at 34, Mikan should continue to give the Sixers enough juice for a title defense and maybe another 2-3 good seasons left in the tank. It will be interesting with what GAME does after this season as most of his backcourt are slated to be free agents: Kiyan Anthony, JL Parks and Carl Braun but they’ll have one more shot to repeat as a group. Then, he can decide to roll with max cap space next off-season in anticipation of Russell being a potential FA next year.
Land of the Sun
2040 181 Suns Sign PG Larry Costello for $90,000,000 over 6 years.
2040 181 Suns Sign C Red Kerr for $57,000,000 over 4 years
Analysis – Phoenix GM Andrew threw a max at Costello which was enough to entice him to leave Boston where rumors are swirling that new exec Beastly didn’t pull out the stops to keep the young point guard. Phoenix brass also were able to resign Kerr to a decent 4 year deal. The Suns now have an intriguing backcourt of Ernie Beck, Hank Morano and Costello along with bigs Red Kerr, Swede Halbrook and recently drafted Shellie McMillon. Will it be enough to keep them from a Wilt-tank-a-thon? We’ll see.
The Bucks are back
2040 181 Bucks Sign PF Bob Pettit for $115,500,000 over 7 years
2040 181 Bucks Sign PG Jack McMahon for $4,700,000 over one year.
2040 181 Bucks Sign C Red Morrison for $18,000,000 over 3 years.
Analysis – Pretty easy one here but Milwaukee was able to bring back coveted big man Bob Petit along with Morrison and backup point guard McMahon at reasonable prices. The Bucks are reeling after coming up a 62 win campaign but lost to the Pistons in the East Semis. New assistant GM/coach Break was handed the keys to the Bucks DC this season and did a strong job aside from the postseason disappointment. Either way, this team should be near the top of the East again this season.

2040 181 Raptors Sign PG Loy Doty for $11,000,000 over one year.
2040 181 Raptors Sign PF Bill Stauffer for $36,000,000 over 4 years.
Analysis – Like the moves for Toronto here. Braz stole Doty from GM buddy Rex in Memphis then sniped Jah in DC for Stauffer. These two signings combined were only $20M in salary and the Raps still have about $5M to play with the rest of FA. Braz might need another scoring wing next to Ebben but so far the rebuild has been good with Bassala also slated to come on board from San Antonio

Portland pays Perry
2040 181 Trail Blazers Sign PG Ron Perry for $90,000,000 over 6 years.
Analysis – Love my guy Dan but this wasn’t the best signing. Not sure if Perry can fix his handles but looking like this might be a waste of a max. He might be a GOAT tanking PG which will be good to land Wilt potentially. However, Dan has stated maybe Perry can play some SG as well? It will be interesting to see what the Blazers do long term with Perry though.
Gallatin gets the Detroit bag
2040 181 Pistons Sign PF Harry Gallatin for $135,912,524 over 6 years.
Analysis – I get that Chip didn’t want to lose Gallatin, former DPOY in the last season. But, he probably could have got him for 1/3 of his total salary. Instead, Gallatin will be making $26M at age 36 and hopefully he doesn’t decline much at that point. The Pistons had a great season making it to the ECF and losing to the eventual champs in the 76ers but hoping they have enough cap room to keep Tywman next season after the contracts handed to Gallatin and Saul Mariaschin.

Analysis – Not sure if Rex got cute with his bids or didn’t anticipate folks going after Doty but it’s unfortunate to lose Doty (who he found out of obscurity as an undrafted rookie free agent) after having for about half a season and giving up their 2042 1st. Worse even, losing him to your buddy Braz. It also sounds like he couldn’t use his cap space before being able to resign Doty/Eppa which also sucks. At least, they were able to keep Eppa on a modest one year deal. The Grizz should still be in contention in the West with many teams bowing out for Wilt but Winograd will have to step in Doty’s absence as of now.
Wiz lose stat Stauffer
2040 181 Raptors Sign PF Bill Stauffer for $36,000,000 over 4 years.
Analysis – Not the best way to start your CY if you’re jah losing a strong backup big type in Stauffer and whiffing on the rest of Day 1. Washington now has to resign George Kaftan and a couple of other players in order to make it a smooth winning season. With so many teams tanking in the league though, the Wiz should be more than okay especially after landing Mel Payton from Minnesota.
