The 2040 draft was an interesting beast. There was clearly 2 top prospects after notes and a great deal of intrigue in how the rest of the lottery selections would shake out. Now that TC has come and gone and we have an idea of how these guys will sim early in their career with preseason behind us let's take a look at the players and formulate an early opinion on them that I'm sure everyone will agree on! Lets kick it off.
1. Chicago Bulls select Hal Greer PG 6'2'' 175 22 B- B C B C A

Grade: A
Hal was the clear #1 selection with extremely enticing notes and a base that would make any GM moan. His volume will be great and his stats (presumably with him at SG) show that he'll be a high level scorer in the league as early as his rookie season. Very good player.
2. Golden State Warriors select Wayne Embry C 6'8'' 240 21 B- D+ C- B B+ A

Wayne was the consensus #2 prospect with seemingly as high of upside as Hal Greer. I would have obviously preferred to have been able to select Greer but Embry isn't a bad consolation prize. His jumpshot doesn't seem as bad as initially indicated in the notes and he takes care of the ball. Bigmen can take a little longer to develop but he had a really good first TC and is well on his way to being a top-tier big in the league.

3. Chicago Bulls select Guy Rodgers PG 6'0'' 185 23 C B- B+ C+ C A

What an amazing first TC for GUY. +7 is insane, I don't think play has camped him much yet either, as I think he focused on Hal with the camps he had available. I wasn't sold on Guy as the clear #3 pick due to his best trait being passing. However, seeing as he as a Warriors HOFer I should have expected him to have 90+ potential. He did have some solid attributes with + rebounding as a PG but that has obviously been expanded with his improvement already. There was a case to be made for a few players here so with how Rodgers looks this earns an A+ grade.
4. Toronto Raptors select Adrian Smith SG 6'1'' 180 22 C+ A- C- C D+ A

I had Adrian #3 on my board coming into the draft. I thought his notes made it apparent he would be an elite scorer that would have scoring ratings that wouldn't be possible to upgrade through camps. This would mean you could/would have to probably focus on other areas through rewards which wouldn't be a bad thing as he needs some help in the rebounding department. Going +2 in scoring is great however it is a slight disappointment his rebounding still looks so sub-par. I won't take away much from his preseason numbers but near 1 turnover per game in limited minutes is slightly concerning for someone that is supposed to be funneled shots in an offense.
5. Los Angeles Clippers select Dave Gambee SF 6'6'' 215 21 B- B C C+ C+ A

A lot of high grades early but the top 5 players went in the first 5 selections so it would be asinine to give out bad grades. Back on topic, I thought this guy wasn't going to be a stock guy? He might have been higher on the board (over Adrian) if this was known prior to the draft however it is possible this is just a preseason anomaly. Gambee looks well on his way to being a solid contributor but I do wonder what his absolute ceiling will be. Anyway he should be a solid starter and that's to be commended because we're about to enter the void of the 2039 draft where I'm not sure how the rest of these selections will pan out.
6. Portland Trail Blazers select Connie Dierking C 6'9'' 222 22 B- C C- B- B- A

I'm probably being too critical with a C+ grade but I can't have an article of grades with all A's and B's, that's BORING! I don't blame the Blazers because at this point there was a bundle of prospects that were seemingly inseparable in this range, he couldn't help he had the 6th pick. Connie DID however have a disappointing first training camp and I'm not sure what his long-term fit is in the league. He doesn't block which you can deal with if he produces great offensive numbers. His outside shot went down and his FG% in the preseason may mean he has a long way to being a starter on a playoff team in the league. He does still have some good qualities and there are a few more TCs to go.
I want Connie to be good just to earn the nickname Diergod

I thought Don was a pretty safe prospect coming into the draft. He clearly had a solid base and I thought with camps his floor was a solid 6th man that can bring scoring and solid rebounding from the backup PG/SG spot. After his first TC and preseason numbers I'm not sure. His 3-PT shot was listed as just mediocre but shooting below 15% is awful alarming. He needs camps pumped into him before going through another training camp and I'm not sure Charles will do the requisite work to do so. The loss of inside scoring this early hurts too. I have to give this a poor grade because even at PG in preseason he simmed like shit.
8. Phoenix Suns select Shellie McMillon PF 6'5'' 205 22 B B- C- B- C+ B

I liked Shellie during the draft process. I figured he didn't have the upside of some of the tier 1 guys but had a good enough skill set that with camps he would be a solid contributor. I would have liked to see him play in the paint during the preseason just to get a better grasp on his blocks and rebounding skills. 8 rpg at SF isn't anemic and he has 2:1 stock ratio at the SF spot, both of which are encouraging. If he has solid potential I think he will be a very solid to good player here. I like this pick!

Since Hub didn't log a single minute in preseason we really just have his notes to go off of. His notes screamed third big to me giving solid rebounding and stocks and not being a liability on the offensive end by turning it over. Maybe not what you hope for with pick #9 but it was a safe pick over some of these other boom/bust prospects. It is slightly concerning he dropped in rebounding but camps should clear that up and there's a possibility he is an B+/B+ 3rd big, we shall see tho.
Hub may struggle to find playing time early in Indiana

The first C potential/non-initial notes player to get drafted. I was hoping he would fall to 10 due to perceived lack of upside but I knew that was probably not going to happen. Gene will at-least have a somewhat lengthy stay in the league due to his positive stock traits. He will provide limited offense but he could at-worst be a role player on a contender. One intriguing option would to be +8 his handles and hope they improve enough to potentially move him to PG. I'm not sure it would be worth the camps but it could take him from role player to starter.
11. Washington Wizards select Hal Duffy PF 6'6'' 225 22 C+ C+ C- B C+ A

Duffy looked like a boom/bust type of player with not a ton of redeeming qualities other than solid stocks. The wizards needed someone that looked at least somewhat enticing to dangle in trade talks to improve their roster and I think Duffy fit the bill. His FT% in preseason was abysmal which is alarming considering he shot 60% from 3-PT. Duffy may be a candidate for a move to SF if he is indeed a sniper. I'm not convinced one way or another on his upside just yet but there may be something here to work with.

Farmer had several "solids" listed in his notes which screamed future + role player. I don't think he ever has a chance of starting due to his outside shooting and if his rebounding can improve his future may be in the paint. Those shooting splits are absolutely atrocious but that's not where his possible future is in the league anyway. Play has bigger fish to camp so I expect Farmer to eventually get packaged in a trade for an upgrade.
13. Cleveland Cavaliers select Temple Tucker C 6'10'' 205 22 B- B- C+ B- C+ B

Temple had pretty solid notes with positive offensive and defensive traits. Again, another player I'm not sure what his upside is but the base is extremely solid here. With upgrades he could look like a very well-rounded contributor early that could play either inside or out in an offense. I think there is a long-term role for him in the league and I can't say the say about a few of the players selected ahead of him so therefore this pick gets a higher grade than the couple of preceding selections.
