LOOKIN AT THE YUTES OF DA LEAGUE
A look at the league's bets young cores (don't call Chris Hansen)
The main bulk of the draft has come and gone and teams have their foundations drafted up already, so let's take a lot at a few teams who decided to go the young route and decided to draft strictly 'YUTES'...
Disclaimer: to quality, players must be 23 and under.
1. Sacramento Kings
419 Ron Artest SF 20 6'7'' 246 C C+ C B C A
584 Kobe Bryant SG 22 6'7'' 210 A- B+ B- A C B
415 Jamal Crawford PG 20 6'6'' 185 C B C C D+ A
The Kings top the list for me. Why? One reason and one reason only and it’s Kobe ‘Bean’ Bryant. He’s elite. The man does it all (RIP). He can score, he plays elite defense, can handle the rock, and rebounds well for a wing. There is a reason why Bryant was the first overall selection in the creation draft. He is the reason why the Kings top the list, but he’s not the only reason. Jamal Crawford is an interesting prospect at the point guard position. He played SG in the test sim, but I think his role will be at the PG position should he be able to control those turnovers. Ron Artest, Metta World Peace, or whatever the fuck you want to call him is the last of the bunch and he’s on here for name recognition and name recognition only. He needs to have elite potential to ever become what he was in real life. The test sim saw him average 2PPG on under 40% FG and under 30% from 3PT. He has elite defense though and with the right GM to give him the care and attention he needs with RCs and ACs, he’ll be fine.
2. Dallas Mavericks
359 Jermaine O'Neal C 22 6'11'' 226 B D+ D- C+ C+ A
495 Tracy McGrady SG 21 6'8'' 210 A- B B- C+ C A
HUGE fan of the Tracy McGrady pick. McGrady was almost dealt to the Houston Rockets for Shawn Marion and a first round pick, but the draft pick in the deal failed it’s physical or some shit. Good for the Mavericks and bad for the Rockets. McGrady, 21, is elite at getting to the rim and and can score from midrange. He’s not your bets defender, but that will come with time.
The Jermaine O’Neal pick confused me a bit at the end of R1, but he definitely was the best young player available at the time. I’m sure he’s loaded with potential and make a nice mate with Tracy McGrady.
3. Minnesota Timberwolves
224 Shareef Abdur-Rahim SF 23 6'9'' 230 B+ C D+ C+ C+ C
337 Vince Carter SG 23 6'7'' 215 B+ A- C B C B
This core is interesting. I love the Vince Carter pick. When I was on the clock at 7, I originally was going to select Carter, then get Brand or Nash with 9. But I figured I could not risk losing out on Brand, as there were not that many good young big men. Vince is going to be a superstar here at the SG position. The Wolves got themselves a stud.
Sharif Abdur-Rahim was a great pick as well. He’ll fit in nicely on the wing with Vince and can rebound decently for a SF. The Wolves are set up nicely with these two.
4. Seattle Supersonics
459 Paul Pierce SF 23 6'7'' 220 B+ B+ C C+ C B
341 Tim Thomas SF 23 6'10'' 230 B C+ C B C B
229 DeShawn Stevenson SG 19 6'5'' 210 C+ C+ C C+ C A
391 Andre Miller PG 21 6'2'' 200 B C B+ C+ C B
Hmm, you could make a case that the Sonics should be higher on this list. Maybe they should, but I’m not feeling re-adjusting everyone. Pierce was another guy I toyed with taking at 7 and again at 9, but I fucking hate his guts in real life (GO KNICKS). He should be a hell of a scorer, but lacks defense and rebounding that I like from SFs. Tim Thomas was another guy I had my eye on, he can score, and if he has a little bit of potential and gets some camps pumped into him, he’ll be great at doing that. I’m going to assume the Sonics play Pierce at SG and TT at SF, but we’ll see.
The entire league was clamoring for C outside Andre Miller to be drafted and Seattle finally pulled the trigger, getting great value at their pick. Miller takes care of the ball and does not commit a lot of turnovers and can rebound decently for a PG. If the Sonics can develop his outside shot (I’m talking jump shot because his 3PT is probably a lost cause), he can be a really good point guard in this league.
5. Indiana Pacers
416 Elton Brand PF 21 6'8'' 260 A- C- C- B B+ B
560 Corey Maggette SG 20 6'6'' 218 B+ C D C+ C B
Ah, my team. The Elton Brand pick received a lot of criticism and I’m not sure why. At 7, the young big men rolled off the board quickly. Looking at the available players, Brand was one of the few good young bigs in the draft. A 20/10/2 guy from the rip as a 21 year old. He may not have the best potential due to his ratings already, but he’ll only improve. Plus, I’m pumping these ACs right into his ass.
Maggette was a guy we considered trading up for, but luckily he fell right into our lap. He’s borderline A- C+ scoring with camps, so I think with a few, camp, the 20 year old wing can turn into a great player for us.
6. San Antonio Spurs
202 Kenyon Martin PF 23 6'9'' 230 B D+ D B C A
556 Lamar Odom SF 20 6'10'' 220 B B B B B B
524 Eddie House PG 22 6'1'' 180 C+ B+ C C C- B
I kind of like the Odom pick. His turnovers are high as fuck, but all of those B’s get me hard. The man does it all and is extremely versatile. Should the Spurs be able to control his turnovers, Odom will be a star in this league. Keynon Martin in the 2nd was questionable to me, as I had bigs who can’t rebound and that C is ugly. He’ll need a lot of loving, but it looks like he can block the shot, which is a bonus.
Eddie House is my sleeper. He has the looks of those shitty rated PGs who dominate. You know what I’m saying? Those C A- C C C guards who average 20 6 and under 2 turnovers. That’s what I’m expecting out of House. We’ll see. Good pick, John!
7. Golden State Warriors
181 Nazr Mohammed C 23 6'10'' 221 C+ D+ D B- B- B
309 Dirk Nowitzki PF 22 7'0'' 250 B B+ C- C C+ A
558 Darius Miles SF 19 6'9'' 202 B D C- C C+ A
Interesting list of guys. Dirk is that dude, and I’d consider playing him at SF with no restrictions. His rebounding is lacking for a C/PF, but at SF, he may thrive. He doesn’t block either, so that hampers the whole C/PF thing. Miles is probably all jumping, but he may turn into something decent. Nazr is questionable as he rarely played in the test sim.
8. Phoenix Suns
433 Baron Davis PG 21 6'3'' 210 B- C+ B B C A
Yah, one player but it’s Baron. He sucked in the test sim, but I’m sure he’s stacked with potential. He’s a great piece for the Suns to build around and I’m sure they’ll add a nice compliment piece to him in the lottery in 2001 and maybe even 2002. We shall see.
9. Portland Trailblazers
364 Al Harrington PF 20 6'9'' 254 B C+ C C C B
487 Richard Hamilton SG 22 6'6'' 185 B C C+ C+ D+ A
Last but not least, the Blazers. They are last because I think Harrington and RIP are just JAGS, but if they get the loving and camping they require, they could be more than that.
