Jerry West PG 6'3'' 175 22 B B+ C+ B C A
Elite. PG instead of SG to highlight his scoring. Can receive 5 ACs and 5 RCs.
I’ve gone back and forth on this. I expect West to have the scoring, defense, and handling edges and Oscar to have a big leg up as a St. Cloud level rebounder at PG. West having borderline C+ rebounding and an extra two ACs and RCs tips things in his favor for me. Super close call, and I expect them to be the two best PGs in the league in no time.
2. Oscar Robertson SF 6'5'' 205 22 B+ B B+ C+ B A *** PG eligible.
Elite. PG eligible. Stud.
Mostly covered him above. I see him as a worse St. Cloud due to the high passing grade. Should be a top 10 player in no time. I think Spence intended him to be the #1 pick, and I think he’ll go #1.
3. Lenny Wilkens PG 6'1'' 180 23 C B B B C A
Traditional outside PG with upside. Should be a very good starter.
Spence added that he has good handles. He’s a lock for A shooting, and you should be looking at 25+ PPG at <2.5 tpg. Could be a franchise player given his upside.
4. Doug Moe SF 6'5'' 215 22 B- C C B+ B- B
Elite jumpshot. Good stocks and rebounds. Solid handles.
Elite jumpshot, good blocks and steals, borderline B rebounds, so he’s a lock to start at PF. Spence said he has solid inside scoring too. I think he’ll go third. I feel comfortable valuing Wilkins ahead of him since Wilkens has a nice potential note, but Moe looks like a Mike Mendenhall type.
5. Jackie Moreland PF 6'7'' 215 22 C+ C+ C- B- C+ A
Good jumpshot. Solid stocks and rebounding. Good upside.
I’m a fan. Good upside with solid stocks and rebounding means 3 BPG and 12 RPG if you camp those categories. Looks like he can be useful on offense, too. I wouldn’t be thrilled to draft him this high, but I don’t see much competition.
6. Al Attles PG 6'0'' 175 24 B- C C+ B+ C A
Former Warrior. Very good inside, midrange, steals, handles.
One of the more buzzworthy prospects given that he’s a former Warrior who has superstar notes apart from the lack of threes. Still, he’s 24, and with borderline C- outside, he has no chance of developing threes. I think he can be really good as a Livingston type, but I’ll take my chances with the bigs ahead of him.
7. Darrall Imhoff C 6'10'' 220 22 C C- C- B- B- A
Steals, rebounding and post defense are solid. Very good upside.
He’s here because of the upside note. He’ll get to A- rebounding, and I’d expect 2+ BPG even if the blocks are mediocre to start. If I’m right, he could be a 4+ stock big given the solid steals. Still, his offense looks ugly, and the blocks aren’t a lock to develop. Not someone I’d be excited to draft.
8. Willie Jones PG 6'3'' 185 24 C+ B- C- C+ C A
Solid scorer inside and out. Good upside. Elite quickness. Mediocre handles.
Mixed on him. His cons–coming in at 24 and having mediocre handles–are significant, but he’s also a good scorer with good upside, and he’ll get PG TCs. I think I’d have to convince myself to take him if I thought there were competition, but I don’t see competition to go eighth.
9. George Price SF 6'6'' 205 22 B C+ C- B+ C+ B
Good inside and midrange scorer. Good rebounder at SF.
Hard to tell when this kind of guy is a role player or a good starter, but that C+ outside grade makes a big difference, as does the good inside scoring. I’m generally very burned out on this kind of prospect–just look at Ed Kazakavich and Tom Hawkins from last draft to know why–but I think this guy is a cut above them. Let’s see if he has threes and stocks.
10. Tony Wilcox PF 6'7” 225 22 C C C- B B+ C
Good midrange, handles, rebounding and strength. Some stocks. Cant score inside.
Some stocks and he can’t score inside, but these are nice notes, and he’s the top B defender and B+ rebounder in the class. So he’s a clear A-/A- big with good midrange and handles, and you could probably get him in the 2 BPG range if you +9 the blocks. Really nice player.
11. Herschell Turner PG 6'2'' 195 22 C+ B- B C C B
Solid inside, midrange, 3 point shot, handles and passing. Defense isnt very good.
This is tough. Solid handles by itself means 3+ turnovers per game. Add in the passing and he’s in Gene Shue territory. But he’s a future B-/A- scorer with very good C rebounding. I think you’re looking at a Jack George with worse perimeter defense.
12. Wayne Lawrence SF 6'7'' 195 22 C+ B- C+ B- C B
Solid jumpshot, quickness and steals.
Has high C rebounding and will get steals. Just camp the offense and he has a good chance at C+/A-/C+/A-/C+. Could be a good third wing or a solid fifth starter. Need to make sure he has good handles though, so be sure to ask if you’re considering drafting him.
13. Horace Walker SF 6'3'' 210 23 B- C C B- B C
N/A
Placeholder pick--right now, this is a shot in the dark for a move to PF, but we’ll get info on him before the draft. What we know looks good. Could be an easy top 10 pick if he has good blocks and handles, or he could go closer to 20 if the notes are discouraging.
14. York Larese SG 6'4'' 183 22 C+ A- C C D+ B
Elite midrange game. Solid inside and from 3 as well. Solid handles. Doesn't defend or board too well.
Like him. Benefits modestly from the SG rule. Not sure he can start, but he’s in the Red Owens/Johnny Payak mold, and that’s very valuable. He’s borderline C- rebounding, so I’d consider throwing +17 into his rebounding. Helps that there’s no need to camp his shooting. I doubt he goes this high.
15. Bob Sims SG 6'5'' 220 22 B- C+ C- B- C B
Solid inside midrange and handles. Some stocks. Decent rebounder for a SG.
I think he’s an OK prospect. Already at B- inside. Very close to B- outside. Some stocks and decent rebounding. Looks to have decent perimeter defense too. +25 the scoring and hope to get him to B-/A- scoring with solid or better steals and rebounding.
16. Lee Shaffer SF 6'7'' 220 21 C+ C+ C C+ C+ A
Solid quickness and jumpshot. Handling is just mediocre. Very good upside.
Notes are pretty shit, but he has four C+ grades, is borderline B- outside, and has very good upside. He’s worth the gamble here. Would help to know if he had stocks; odd that there have been so few questions this year.
17. Fred LaCour PG 6'5'' 210 22 C C B- B+ C+ B
Good handles and quickness. Plus rebounder at PG. Good defender.
Is he good or is he just fun? I’d pay to find out at 17 in this draft, but not any higher, because if the offense is useless, he’s unplayable. Always love good rebounding and handles at PG. If nothing else, maybe the Warriors should start him.
18. Jay Arnette PG 6'2'' 175 22 C B- C+ C+ C- B
Solid jumpshot, 3 point shot and handles. Some steals too.
Just a decent player. Has a chance to be serviceable as a starting PG. He’d be a good prospect if the handles were good–that would allow you to +25 his offense, and that’s probably a startable piece in the current PG environment. But solid handles means you need to spend camps there, so he’s borderline.
19. Ralph Davis SG 6'4'' 180 22 C+ C+ C- C+ C- A
Elite quickness. Good upside. Jumpshot and handles are solid.
Quite a few of these types in the class. He doesn’t have any glaring flaws, and it's nice to see the handling is solid, because I feel like most of these raw types have had mediocre handles. Since you'll probably be able to spend all of his camps on scoring, he’s worth the flier, but I’d have low expectations.
20. Tom Sanders SF 6'6'' 210 22 B C C- A- C+ B
Good inside, jumpshot, handles, quickness and post defense.
If he’s a small forward, he’s shit. If he has blocks, he’s still probably shit due to the borderline C rebounding, but move him to PF and camp the rebounds.
Elite. PG instead of SG to highlight his scoring. Can receive 5 ACs and 5 RCs.
I’ve gone back and forth on this. I expect West to have the scoring, defense, and handling edges and Oscar to have a big leg up as a St. Cloud level rebounder at PG.
