Trying to do something a bit different, here's a minor analysis of the draft with different Superlatives to describe some picks:
Best Pick- John Havlicek SG 6'5'' 203 21 B B A- C+ C+ A - #1, Phoenix Suns
It's a cop-out, but picking by far the best player at the first pick is a must. Andrew with a lucky jump here to get Hondo, who will anchor things in Phoenix for years. He very much has the potential to be one of the top 5 SGs in the league as early as this season. His notes are fantastic- "Elite inside scorer. Very good jump shooter, ball handler and passer. Plus rebounder for a SG." Hard to get much better than that.
Most Generic Name Award- Chris Smith C 6'6'' 225 22 C+ C+ C- C+ C+ A - #13, Seattle Sonics
Chris Smith is literally the name of my boss. I know about 8 different people named Chris Smith, or some variation of that name. Extremely generic. And in terms of the actual pick, it was a bit of a headscratcher to move all the way down from 4 to 13 to get this guy. A lot of people questioned mattfaria12 for this one. His notes- "Mid across with good upside." don't inspire much confidence in me that he'll end up as any sort of a contributor. That's a guy you pick later in the first round- especially with guys like Al Butler, Jerry Graves, and George Patterson still around. If you needed a big- George Patterson would have been a fine pick that no one would have batted an eye at there. I think moving down from 4 to 9 was fine (although it remains to be seen if Hamilton can be a contributor- he needs to play SG if we're being honest)- it was the move from 9 to 13 for a 45 pick that he might not even get to use that was questionable for a lot of people.
Lottery Steal- Tony Jackson SF 6'4'' 200 19 C+ B- C C C A - #12, Indiana Pacers
This award goes to someone in the first half of the draft that I think will develop into a really, really good player. And I'm very much a fan of Tony Jackson, just based off my history with him. I liked his notes- "Decent shooter. Solid handles. Good upside." and Spencer added that his steals were "Very good". Had I stuck at 9 instead of moving up, T-Jax was very much in play for me there. I think Losanglife did a good job here. Nice pick.
Late First Steal- Cleo Hill SG 6'1'' 185 23 B- C C+ B+ C C - #25, Golden State Warriors
There were actually a NUMBER of players that this could have gone to. Hill, Siegfried, Butcher, Burgess. Lots of potential Spencer specials down there. But I think Hill, based off where his ratings were ranking against everyone else (I seem to recall they were borderline near the top going to the next ranking for a few of them) and his background in real life could be the guy that gets the turbo-boost once he plays on the court. Good pick for @kwisatzhaderach here.
Did Not Want Any Part Of This Draft Award- 2 years left and the Cleveland Cavaliers
I mean, he's the runaway winner in this one. Forfeited both of his picks near the ends of round 1 and 2, pretty easy call for this award. They don't really need the players right now though, they have a good team. I'm just trying to create categories at this point.
Most Likely Lottery Pick To Be Dealt- Don Kojis SF 6'5'' 215 22 B- B+ C- C+ C+ A- #3, Boston Celtics
This is a pretty obvious choice, with Zeke in his CY, but I think there would be a lot of teams that would jump at the chance to get this guy. Notes- "Good jumpshot, 3 point shot, handles and quickness. Some stocks. Solid rebounder." Any team looking to trade a top player for a high lottery pick would probably PM him, if they haven't already. I legit thought this would be a guy you could see someone like Wayne Embry traded for, but maybe I'm wrong. I wanna also make note that I preferred Scott to Kojis like a few others did, but I know Kojis has a lot of fans on the boards as well. I think he'll be a good player.
Top 3 Draft Awards- Andrew , the original michael , Losanglife
Already talked about Hondo for Andrew, but I also really liked the Al Butler pick at 14. The notes- "Good jumpshot, 3 point shot, handles, perimeter defense, drive defense, steals and quickness." lead me to believe he'll be a really solid all-around guard and I'm actually kinda surprised he fell to 14. Sargo ended up with Walt Bellamy (one of my all-time favorite players), Bevo Nordmann (loved his notes- "Elite strength. Good post defense. Good rebounder. Some stocks. Solid handles." should be a solid big), and also Burgess and Siegfried as well at the end of the first. And the Pacers ended up with Kevin Loughery ("Good jumpshot, 3 point shot, handles and quickness. Solid inside, passing and steals.") who should contribute from the get-go, as well as T-Jax, who I talked about above.
Best Irish Name- Danny Doyle PF 6'8'' 200 21 B C D+ C+ C+ C - 2nd Round, pick 8, Detroit Pistons
Hey, I was in Ireland for the last 2.5 weeks- I have to do this category. There were also a number of candidates for this award (Johnny and Jake Egan, Kevin Loughery, Jack Turner, George Finley) but Danny Doyle just rolls off the tongue.
Thanks for reading!
