Red’s Rookie recap
Welcome one and all where we break down the rookies from 02 and then also look at the 01 and 00 rookies in a where are they now comparison.
As was debuted with the last Red’s review Included are two new stats, Points per Shot and Ball in hand Points!
Points per shot is just that, total points from FGs and 3pointers divided by FGA. Ball in players hand is the same but it also looks at FT’s too, basically it comes down to, every time a person tries to score, this is their average per attempt. The guys that have the highest BihP are the guys you want to have the ball in one position game with time running out.
So the RedsPEF has DD walking away from the rest at mid season, but then Ming the Merciless started imposing his will and not only did he top the list in RPEF but in something else too that we’ll get to later. The 02 class really has some good players join the league with 5 guys getting a rating of 20+.
When you compare the 02 class to the 01 class though you see that 01 has 8 players with a 20+ rating and 01 so far does seem to have been a very deep class. For all the grief Randolph gets on the forum, his 20/10 stats combined with a good stock/to ratio has him topping the 01 class in the RPEF
And then the 00 class. Good thing there wasn’t a draft just for them as it would have been the saddest draft ever, once you got past Jamal and Jerome. Najera is OK, as 6th man kind of guy, but wont ever be a star. If Redd ever gout out of a negative stocks/TO situation, his rating could get him north of the Magloirean line.
Last, we look at the tops of all 3 classes based on the BihP rating. 2 of the top 3 came from the 02 draft, which while didn’t have as many good players, seem to have the brightest star pre 03. What is also interesting to note, the 3 guys that had the highest BihP score, also had 3 of the top 4 highest RPEF scores.
One thing to notice, is Yao, while he doesn't rank well on pure points per shot, if he has it in his hand, he's scoring.
Well there you have it, thanks for joining us for another Red’s rookie look. Be on the lookout for the upcoming 15Ppg or 10Rpg article where we take a dive into the guys averaging that last season, in the Red’s season #3 recap.
I looked at the PER formula by John Hollinger, and realized while I would not mind programming it, doing it in excel would blow chunks. So I looked at combining a basic version of his idea with the outdated ( (ppg+R+A+B+S-TO) to come up with a rating that not only rewarded a good EFT, but also penalized people from missing fee points. I’m sure Shaq hates this formula that I developed. While it really hurt his points portion of the formula, his nonstop rebounding and the best assist per game rate of any of the Centers has him as one of the best Centers in the game. Now to validate the formula I looked at historical data of some of the best players to ever play the game and then further tweaked the formula to reward steals a tad more than blocks as a block doesn’t automatically cause a turnover. At no point was the PEF copied or tweaked, just a few ideas about what he has done. That said assists are going even more down in value that they have now.
