2004 Pre-Notes FULL Mock Draft!
Round 1:
#1) - Dwight Howard C 6'10'' 225 19 B- D+ D+ C+ B- A
Analysis: This is a no-brainer. He should have high potential as a teenager allowing for the defense/rebounding to improve to an elite level. His inside right now is likely mostly jumping/strength but I'm sure he shows some flashes there. Was expecting his outside to be worse than D+ but it's actually manageable. Whomever gets this pick will take Dwight and likely be happy as he develops into a future Hall of Famer.
#2) - Al Jefferson C 6'10'' 289 19 B- C- D+ C+ C+ A
Analysis: Not whom I would have expected to put second but strangely when sorting by Inside Scoring and Potential, Jefferson is second behind only Howard. Also age 19 and if his upside is as advertised, he should blossom into a very nice big. In real life out of this class, he was the only player other than Howard to make an All-League Team in his career. So it wouldn't shock me if Spencer made him the second best. Expecting his offense to be fairly polished (B- C-seems good for a rookie big) and his defense/rebounding to be a work in progress. Regardless, a very interesting project.
#3) - Andre Iguodala SF 6'6'' 215 20 B- C C+ B C A
Analysis: A real life Finals MVP for the Warriors, Iguodala may not have the prettiest ratings but will probably be a highly important glue guy for any team. His defense/rebounding looks terrific for a rookie wing while his offense seems like it is requiring development. This 20-year old out of Arizona should be a high pick just due to the all-around production he provides as it should be vital for any winning team.
#4) - Josh Smith PF 6'9'' 225 19 B- C+ C B- C+ A
Analysis: You could argue "J-Smoove" going as high as second but due to his erratic play, feel like he could drop. A high school kid who shows some flashes offensively, defensively and on the boards. If lucky, can develop into a player in the mold of a Shawn Marion or Gerald Wallace, both of whom have proven to be legitimate starting PFs in this league. Wouldn't be shocked however if he develops into an SF in the mold of an Andrei Kirilenko (though not as good). Time shall tell what he becomes but the pure talent and ability makes him a consideration to go top five in this draft.
#5) - Emeka Okafor C 6'10'' 252 22 C+ D+ D+ C+ B- A
Analysis: Seems like a fairly well-rounded big who should possess some shotblocking ability making him a valuable asset. Especially in a league starved for bigs. You could argue him going as high as second or third overall but he doesn't have the intangibles of an Andre Iguodala or the pure talent of a Josh Smith which is why I had him drop down to fifth. Either way, a good pick and would be terrific value here at fifth overall.
#6) (from ) - Luol Deng SF 6'9'' 237 19 B- C+ C- C+ C A
Analysis: Not sure how he develops but seems like a plus-rebounder for a wing. Seems very raw offensively and defensively but the upside should make him a highly regarded prospect. Age 19 so he is likely to retain most of his potential after the first training camp. He might be a couple of seasons away from becoming a key contributor but if he can develop into that player, should be a possible All-Star wing.
#7)- Shaun Livingston PG 6'7'' 192 19 C+ C C+ B C- B
Analysis: While we could go in a lot of different directions here, I feel like Livingston is the first PG to come off the board. The defense already looks terrific and the rebounding is nice for a PG. Spencer has already hinted that he will not be much of a scorer but that isn't necessarily a bad thing. If he can be a good caretaker of the ball, elite defensive point guard, solid rebounder at PG and develop his offense such that he could get double digits efficiently as a non-option - that could make him the ultimate game manager. He may not work for every system but would be awesome for many systems giving him value at the PG spot.
#8) (from ) - Ben Gordon SG 6'3'' 200 21 C B+ C C D+ A
Analysis: Terrific shooter, likely has some volume should end up being the best pure scorer from this draft. Feel like if he has PG-eligibility, he could go as high as 2nd Overall with ease but being stuck at SG limits him. Doesn't really do much else besides shoot/score but that's the most important thing in a two-guard. Should be a legitimate starter/option in an outside offense for many years to come.
#9) (from ) - Kevin Martin SG 6'7'' 199 21 C+ B D+ D+ D+ B
Analysis: That D+ defense looks absolutely UGLY but you can hide it in the right system. His scoring ability as a rookie seems special. Similar to Gordon above him, he already shows terrific shooting ability for a rookie (though not as good) and likely has a lot of scoring volume (possibly even more than Ben). He should become a 20+ PPG option scorer at SG early in his career making him a valuable player. If you can camp the scoring prior to the first training camp and it improves, he could become a poor man's Carmelo Anthony which would be a good get in this draft.
#10) - Devin Harris PG 6'3'' 185 21 C B- B- B- D+ B
Analysis: This is where I am slotting the second PG of this draft in the Wisconsin rookie Devin Harris. While his upside may be in question, his talent is not as he already shows the all-around tools you look for in a starting point guard. Assuming he can improve his shooting and ha good scoring volume plus decent handles, he should be a legitimate starter. You could even argue him going higher than this pick but it just isn't a "sexy" pick. He should be solid, nothing special or amazing but solid.
#11) (from ) - J.R. Smith SG 6'6'' 225 19 C+ B+ C- C C- A
Analysis: His ratings look pretty and he could go higher than this pick (could easily argue him above Gordon/Martin) but I question his scoring volume. Feel like the C+ inside and C- rebounding are mostly athleticism-based. While the shooting is amazing at age 19, the rest of his game is very raw. But being age 19, makes him an intriguing prospect as he should retain his potential through the first training camp. But being a key player on the real-life 2016 Cavaliers, he may not have much potential in the tank. Time will tell what he becomes but the natural abilities do look special.
#12) - Tony Allen SF 6'4'' 215 22 C+ C C- A- C B
Analysis: As a rookie, the defense/rebounding is elite for a wing. The offense is ugly and will require a lot of camping as well as some training camp luck. But he should have value as a wing due the defense/rebounding alone (especially as a situational player in postseason play). For that reason, I have him near the end of the lottery.
#13) (from ) - Dorell Wright SF 6'9'' 205 19 C B C- C+ C A
Analysis:A 19-year old wing who looks to have nice upside. The shooting/rebounding is already strong, the rest of his game is probably raw. If he can get the right camps and some lucky training camps, he could become a very nice SF/SG. May not have the best name value but it's difficult to overlook a 19-year old wing showing A scouted potential with B outside and C rebounding. Notes will really determine the type of player he ends up becoming but in the pre-notes edition, it's too difficult for me not to slot him in the lottery.
#14) (from ) - Trevor Ariza SF 6'8'' 215 19 C B D+ B C B
Analysis: Everyone loves a 3-and-D guy and Trevor looks to be just that. Doubt he ever develops enough scoring volume to be a star but the shooting/defense will make him a solid starter in this league for many years to come. He has the defense/rebounding to play SF in the frontcourt but those attributes can also make him scary as an SG in the backcourt. He is a talented young player, could easily go higher than this draft slot but feel like it would be difficult to take a player nobody envisions becoming a star (or elite at anything) in the lottery which is why I feel like 14th is best for him. And it would be a steal here.
#15) (from ) - Christian Drejer SF 6'9'' 225 22 C+ B+ C- D+ D+ B
Analysis: The lack of defense/rebounding likely makes him a SG in the long run. The main reason he gets drafted in the first round is that C+ B+ offense. It could just be a gimmick or he could be for real. Either way, it's a roll of the dice and a gamble worth taking in this range. As far as the type of player he is in the long run, his notes should compare to Kevin Martin except his scoring volume being a complete question mark making him riskier. His rebounding is not good enough to be an SF but should be decent as a SG. Possibly another poor man's Carmelo.
#16) (from ) - Jameer Nelson PG 6'0'' 190 22 C C+ B- B- D+ B
Analysis: Was expecting his shooting to be better as a rookie but it should develop with some time. Assuming his handles are workable and he has some scoring volume as the shooting improves, he should become a legitimate starting point guard in this league. Would be a very nice pick here in the middle of the first round.
#17) (from ) - Andris Biedrins C 6'11'' 240 18 C+ F+ D C+ B- B
Analysis: An 18-year old showing above-average rebounding is promising. Expecting him to have some shotblocking ability. Could easily argue him going higher than this spot but he just seems so raw and his upside seems highly questionable. Seems like a boom or bust gamble and should be an interesting player to see as time goes on.
#18) (from ) - Beno Udrih PG 6'3'' 205 22 C+ B- C+ C+ D+ B
Analysis: Looks like a nice all-around point guard. Assuming his handles/scoring can continue to develop, should be a solid starter in this league for many years to come. If he gets notes, that would help tremendously in trying to gauge what he is but just based on ratings alone, he looks like the type of player you would see in the back half of the first round.
#19) - Damien Wilkins SF 6'6'' 225 24 C+ C+ C- B C B
Analysis: The letter grade ratings look pretty for a rookie. The defense/rebounding is a plus for a wing. The C+ C+ offense is cool but there are many question marks as to whether or not he has the scoring volume to make an impact. Regardless, the ratings alone get him into the first round, possibly even higher than this spot.
#20) - Sebastian Telfair PG 6'0'' 165 19 C C+ B- C D A
Analysis: This is a boom-or-bust upside-only pick. "Bassy" is the last player remaining here with A-scouted potential and his age just makes him interesting. He is likely two years away from being two years away but if he can develop, might become a very good starting PG in this league despite the complete lack of rebounding. His career pretty much hinges on camps and luck in training camps.
#21) (from ) - Josh Childress SF 6'8'' 210 21 B- C C- B- C B
Analysis: The rebounding looks nice for a wing, B- inside looks interesting too. Possibly a good defensive player as well. Feel like he could end up being a solid player low-key. Would be a nice pick in the back half of the first round.
#22) (from ) - Delonte West PG 6'4'' 180 21 C C+ B- C+ D+ B
Analysis: To be honest, there are more interesting PGs available but Delonte has that name value. This motherfucker could develop into a solid player in this league. Doesn't seem to be great at anything right now but possibly has some upside. Without a doubt however, I do expect him to go in the first round.
#23) (from ) - Anderson Varejao C 6'10'' 270 22 C+ D+ D C+ B- B
Analysis: "Sideshow Bob" is a cool player from Brazil. Doubt he ever becomes much of a shotblocker but this all-around game for a big will make him a very solid rotational player. Feel like in a league starved for bigs, he is without a doubt a legitimate first rounder. Could even go a lot higher than this spot but just isn't a "sexy" player like those I have above him.
#24) (from ) - Royal Ivey PG 6'3'' 200 23 C C+ C B C C
Analysis: B defense and C rebounding looks incredible for a rookie PG. Is that enough for the first round? I think so. I even think this is too low but the lack of name value may drop him. I am likely biased because Royal was my point guard in BBSv5 when I won back-to-back titles. If this is the same player, then he should go A LOT higher as he had solid scoring, elite handles and rebounding there. If it's not the same player, then this is probably a bad pick. Time will tell but worth a roll of the dice near the end of the first half.
#25) (from ) - Sasha Vujacic PG 6'7'' 195 20 C+ C+ C+ C+ D B
Analysis: PG-eligiblity makes him interesting. Very tall but looks like a horrible rebounder which is hilarious. The rest of his game however looks very interesting for a rookie making him worthy of a first round pick. Feel like the B potential at age 20 and the straight C+ ratings for Inside/Outside/Handling/Defense is intriguing. If a couple of those can blow up in TC, he might end up being a nice starter.
#26) (from ) - Kris Humphries PF 6'9'' 235 19 C+ C D+ C B- B
Analysis: A 19-year old big with C+ C offense an B- rebounding makes him nice. Looks like he could become a double-double machine but the lack of defense drops him significantly. He could end up being more suited to be a wing rather than a big in this league due to the defense but still looks like he has the potential to be a very solid player.
#27) (from ) - Vassilis Spanoulis SG 6'4'' 195 22 C C C B- C- C
Analysis: A real-life MVP in Europe gives him some interesting name value as other Europeans have ended up developing into special players here. His ratings are horrible and doesn't look first round worthy but at this point in the draft, you likely have to roll the dice. Perhaps he can be a slightly worse Morlende. That alone makes him worth taking a shot at.
#28) (from ) - Robert Swift C 7'0'' 245 19 C+ D+ D C C+ B
Analysis: It's mostly the fact that he is 19 and seems to have some upside. Doesn't really show much ability overall but the inside/rebounding at C+ is a positive for a project. Really needs a lot of training camp luck to turn into anything but this low in the draft, it's wortha shot.
#29) (from ) - Blake Stepp PG 6'4'' 194 22 C- B C- D+ D+ C
Analysis: The ugly weird ratings makes me think Spencer perhaps made him good under the hood. I have no basis to back it up but the B outside is nice for a rookie and D+ rebounding is fine for a PG. Perhaps he is lacking in athleticism/passing with good handles/inside? Perhaps the D+ defense has fine stocks but weak positional? Obviously I am posing hypotheticals but this is the type of project which Spencer would make.
Round 2:
#30) (from ) - Chris Duhon PG 6'1'' 185 22 C C+ C+ B C- C
#31) (from ) - Pavel Podkolzin C 7'5'' 260 19 C F+ D C C+ B

#50) (from ) - Donta Smith SG 6'7'' 215 21 C+ C C- C+ C- C
#51) (from ) - Jackson Vroman C 6'10'' 220 23 C+ D+ D+ C+ C+ C
#52) (from ) - Segei Monia SF 6'8'' 220 21 C C C C+ C B
#53) (from ) - Lionel Chalmers PG 6'0'' 180 24 C C+ C+ C+ D+ C
#54) (from ) - Albert Miralles C 6'10'' 243 22 C+ C- D+ C+ C+ C
#55) - John Edwards C 7'0'' 275 23 C C- D+ C+ C+ C
#56) (from ) - Sergei Lishouk C 6'11'' 250 22 C+ C- D C C+ C
#57) (from ) - Pape Sow C 6'10'' 250 23 C D+ D C C+ C
#58) (from ) - Luis Flores PG 6'2'' 200 23 D C+ B C D- C
Analysis: Mr. Irrelevant here is another UGLY looking player whom you are HOPING has good ratings under the hood. THe D inside and D- rebounding is absolutely disgusting but Spencer can be creative with the projects so why not?
