What Song is your current squad? (03’ East edition)
*Songs were selected based on the artist/team location and/or the team’s current outlook as of day 60 of the 2003 season.
Miami Heat - kobe
Current record- 29-8
Song- Pitbull feat. Jennifer Lopez – We Are One
Why? The Heat currently hold the top seed in the East by good 3.5 game margin. Zach Randolph has quietly become a superstar in just his 3rd season and 2nd campaign in Miami. Is this team is as good as they’ve been producing? Time will tell but for now they are #1 in the EC.
NY Knicks - Skillz
Current record- 27-14
Song- Neil Diamond – Sweet Caroline
Why? Skillz apparently ‘loves his team’ right now so good times never seemed so good right now in the Big Apple. Aside from SJax’s monster FA deal, the Knicks have a nice assortment of young veterans in the mix with Mr. Big Shot Billups, Donyell Marshall, Bruce Bowen, Sam Dalembert and Shawn Marion. Now everyone sing it – SWEET CAROLINE OH OH OH.
New Jersey Nets- greeme
Record- 23-18
Song- Bruce Springsteen – Born to Run
Why? This team likes to run fast, VERY FAST all the time, every season. The Nets have raced out to a 23-18 start in the first half of the season and much of the credit can go to the 3rd year pro Joe Johnson who’s averaging 27 a game and Mehmet Okur who is up to almost 20 a game. This team was born to run.
Boston Celtics- Lasagna and tears of failure
Current Record- 19-17
Song- Aerosmith- Cryin’
Why? It’s been an emotional 90+ days for the Boston Celtics starting with the 02 playoffs. They limped into the post-season with Shane Battier getting hurt then Mike Bibby went down. This season they’ve fared worse so far with Rasheed Wallace getting the dreaded broken skull injury and Bibby getting nipped again. I think this 1989 Aerosmith hit featuring a young Alicia Silverstone sums it up.
Philadelphia 76ers – Stevie B
Current record- 17-16
Song- Boyz II Men - Motownphilly
Why? The Sixers appears to be back in their Philly vibes with post-season aspirations. They scored on C-Webb this past off-eason and picked up some great backcourt pieces in Francis, Andre Miller and Dejan Bodiroga. Doom doom doom da da, doom doom doom da da.
Orlando Magic- breakthewalls footy
Current Record- 18-19
Song- Lifehouse- Hanging by a Moment
Why? The Magic are in their CY and they are currently 1 game out of the playoff race. They made some nice off-season moves by nabbing Marcus Camby from Utah and drafting Leandro Barbosa with the #9 pick. However, Rashard Lewis’ production is down this season including his shooting percentages and the Magic depth is a little low. Looks like the Magic could still sneak into the playoffs or get 42 – best of luck to them. For now, they exemplify this 2000 from this LA grunge group.
Washington Wizards- jahallstar
Record- 15-20
Song- Johnny Gill- Maybe
Why? The Wiz have been up and down to start this year. Antonio McDyess appears to have regressed after a successful two year stint with Memphis, Michael Redd looks to be slumping compared to last season and ‘UD’ Haslem has really pretty ratings but doesn’t get a lot of blocks. They do have some nice pieces in RJ, Perkins and Walton so maybe they cash one or multiple for an upgrade somewhere? As of now, ‘maybe’ this team makes the postseason.
Toronto Raptors- GAME
Current Record- 26-12
Song- Kardinall Offishall Feat. The Clipse – Set it off
Why?- The Raptors are near the top of the East and their GM is letting everyone know about it. J-Rich and Parker are a fantastic young backcourt and their bigs are very efficient a getting stocks. Toronto is setting it off this year and everyone’s on notice.
Indiana Pacers- the original michael
Current Record- 25-15
Song- Babyface – What If
Why? What if the 03’ Splash Bros of Arvydas and Arenas works and carries them to the Finals? It’s a very distinct possibility for the Pacers who are in the top 10 in points scored a game and top 15 in 3 PT%. With the Cavs and Nets not being as strong as they’ve been in prior seasons, Indy has a shot.
Cleveland Cavaliers- 2 years left
Current Record- 21-15
Song- Kid Cudi- Pursuit of Happiness
Why?- It’s very hard to please Svedda but I think he’s on the road to happiness? He got a nice return on Grant Hill, got his 1st round pick back and still has very nice pieces (KVH, KG, Damon) to make the post-season and reset his CY again. Now that he’s looking at draft picks in his future, he should know everything that shine ain’t always gonna be gold.
Atlanta Hawks- Losanglife
Current Record- 18-22
Song- Outkast- Ms. Jackson
Why? Are the Hawks for real and will they make their CY? Time will soon tell as they are currently 4 games under .500 with 42 games to go for them in the 2nd half of the season. The East playoff picture right now is very tight and they might need to go 24-18 to surpass the 42 wins needed.
Milwaukee Bucks- chipper
Current Record- 18-23
Song- Eric Benet – News for You
Why? The Bucks are pushing to make the playoffs or hit 42 wins so that might be news to you. They’ve made a flurry of deals since the off-season and into the regular season most notably getting Grant Hill and other nice depth pieces. Does this team have enough at this point though or are they another trade or two away?
New Orleans – Von
Current Record- 15-21
Song- Harry Connick Jr. – I could write a book
Why? Pig says he can write a book on his hotel experiences but wonder how many pages he can fill up on the Hornets season thus far? It’s been a perplexing first half for New Orleans who have a positive point differential, strong on stocks versus turnovers and decent depth. So what gives? This might be an FBB one-off deal but the Andrei Kirlenko pickup should help their defense.
Detroit Pistons - Galo
Current Record- 9-29
Song- Stevie Wonder – I Wish
Why?- The Pistons are wishing for lotto luck and good fortunes in their future. After a dismantling their team after 3 playoff appearances, Detroit is in full tank mode and looking ahead. Things should be looking up if Stevie’s wish comes true.
Chicago Bulls- Play / insane
Current Record- 9-38
Song- Earth, Wind & Fire- Shining Star
Why?- This 1975 EWF epitomizes the Chicago GMs reputation but also maybe a reflection of last year’s #2 pick, Amar’e Stoudamire. Chicago is deep in year one of the rebuilding mode and we’ll see if play or insane continue to steer the ship along. Either way, their future should be in good hands.
