Our fantastic commissioner just simmed to day 60. You know what that means, right? All-star weekend! And with all-star weekend, we get the all-star game. What do we get with the ASG? Poorly picked teams courtesy of FBB!
To rectify that, I have produced my list of All-Stars, which is undeniably superior!
To select my team, I used my proprietary points above average metric. I actually used field goal and free throw attempts for each player to help determine their value.
In the tradition of FBB, I selected two players at each position per conference, and went by listed position on the roster page. Note that the order the players are listed in is meaningless. To the list!
WEST
Center
Ben Wallace - Kings
11.7 ppg - 14.8 rpg - 2.1 apg - 1.9 spg - 4.4 bpg - 1.2 topg
45% FG - 00% 3P - 41% FT
Alonzo Mourning - Trail Blazers
19.9 ppg - 12.2 rpg - 3.9 apg - 1.1 spg - 3.6 bpg - 2.1 topg
47% FG - 33% 3P - 69% FT
FBB selected Alonzo as well, but somehow left off Ben Wallace in favor of Shaq. Zo is an easy choice – he scores efficiently enough that the volume is helpful, plus he is great in terms of rebounds and blocks, with adequate turnovers given his point production.
Shaq gets more points than Wallace and offers the same rebounding, but is behind by about 2 stocks and has two more turnovers per game than Wallace. Shaq’s FT shooting on a high volume hurts him here too. Give me Wallace every time. Six stocks per game is incredible!
Power Forward
Jerome Moiso - Rockets
16 ppg - 12.5 rpg - 3.1 apg - 1.2 spg - 1.8 bpg - 1.7 topg
47% FG - 58% 3P - 68% FT
Tim Duncan - Clippers
31 ppg - 14.4 rpg - 6.3 apg - 1.4 spg - 2.6 bpg - 2.1 topg
48% FG - 00% 3P - 86% FT
Duncan is an easy choice, obviously. FBB chose Gerald Wallace at the other PF in the West. Moiso is having the better season is my opinion. Gerald is just 43.5% from the floor, which makes his 24.6 PPG a negative, and he averages more turnovers than stocks. Moiso, on the other hand, is stock to turnover positive (almost 2 to 1), and his 16 ppg come efficiently.
Point Guard
Steve Nash - Kings
29.3 ppg - 4.8 rpg - 9.7 apg - 1.7 spg - 0.1 bpg - 2.4 topg
50% FG - 45% 3P - 96% FT
Jason Kidd - Lakers
23.2 ppg - 7.3 rpg - 11.3 apg - 2.1 spg - 0.2 bpg - 2.8 topg
48% FG - 38% 3P - 82% FT
I match FBB here. Nash is an efficiency god putting up 30 ppg. 5 rpg as a PG isn’t bad either. Kidd has become efficient again, making his scoring valuable, plus his rebounding is elite. The turnovers are high but the steals are offsetting. Apologies to Jamal Crawford who was an extremely close 3rd at the position!
Small Forward
Dirk Nowitzki - Lakers
29.9 ppg - 10.6 rpg - 2.5 apg - 1.4 spg - 0.4 bpg - 1.8 topg
49% FG - 42% 3P - 86% FT
Larry Johnson - Clippers
26 ppg - 9.5 rpg - 3.9 apg - 0.9 spg - 0.2 bpg - 2.5 topg
51% FG - 42% 3P - 89% FT
Another match with FBB! Dirk is an obvious selection given his scoring volume and efficiency. The rebounding and low turnovers are the icing on the cake. LJ can’t touch Dirk in terms of stocks and turnovers, but he matches him in efficiency and is damn close in scoring volume and rebounds.
Shooting Guard
Allen Iverson - Kings
34.3 ppg - 5.5 rpg - 4.5 apg - 3 spg - 0.3 bpg - 2.5 topg
48% FG - 46% 3P - 83% FT
Manu Ginobili - Lakers
27.8 ppg - 7.6 rpg - 3.6 apg - 1.6 spg - 0.1 bpg - 1.2 topg
48% FG - 48% 3P - 86% FT
Yet another exact match with FBB. AI is amazing and Brian should never have traded him. SG is a loaded position and the Answer is the best in the West. Three steals per game! Very efficient 34 ppg! I just wanted him to add something and he could have had Duncan instead of Walker…
Manu gets the nod for the second spot on the back of his strong rebounding, amazing %’s, high volume, and having more steals than turnovers. My condolences to DD who is great but somehow not an all-star! Like I said, SG is a loaded position.
EAST
Center
Zach Randolph - Heat
25.6 ppg - 11.9 rpg - 2.1 apg - 1 spg - 0.6 bpg - 1.4 topg
49% FG - 26% 3P - 86% FT
Mehmet Okur - Nets
19.8 ppg - 9.7 rpg - 1.6 apg - 1.2 spg - 0.4 bpg - 1.5 topg
49% FG - 42% 3P - 84% FT
Another exact match with FBB – I don’t know whether to be impressed with the game or ashamed of myself. Z Bo is an easy selection as the best “center” in the East, at least based on roster listings. Okur isn’t a flashy name, but there wasn’t a lot to pick from. Besides, an efficient 20/10 makes him worthy. The production outpaces the name value!
Power Forward
Marcus Camby - Magic
12 ppg - 14.5 rpg - 3.1 apg - 1.4 spg - 2.5 bpg - 1.6 topg
50% FG - 00% 3P - 65% FT
Kevin Garnett - Cavaliers
24.7 ppg - 13.4 rpg - 3.7 apg - 1.8 spg - 2.5 bpg - 2.1 topg
46% FG - 12% 3P - 79% FT
Finally, another disagreement with FBB. Instead of KG, they had C-Webb. Doesn’t make much sense to me. KG has been a little bit better in every way – better scorer in terms of volume and efficiency, grabs more boards, blocks more shots, and gets more steals. Camby is Wallace-lite. Crazy good rebounding, 2.3 more stocks than turnovers per game. His 12 ppg come pretty efficiently too based on his field goal percentage (50%).
Point Guard
Gilbert Arenas - Pacers
33.4 ppg - 4.4 rpg - 6.3 apg - 1.8 spg - 0.2 bpg - 2.7 topg
50% FG - 42% 3P - 91% FT
Chauncey Billups - Knicks
26.6 ppg - 4.5 rpg - 5.4 apg - 1.3 spg - 0.3 bpg - 1.2 topg
50% FG - 48% 3P - 82% FT
Agent Zero was selected by FBB too, and how could he not be? 33 ppg in a 50/40/90 season. Ridiculous.
FBB went with Tony Parker for the other slot, and I can’t argue too much. It was razor close between them for me. How did Billups get the nod with 5-6 less ppg? The edges in shooting efficiency, rebounding, and turnovers did it for me. I really could go either way though – both are fantastic players.
Small Forward
Glenn Robinson - Hawks
29.9 ppg - 8 rpg - 2.5 apg - 1.4 spg - 0.4 bpg - 1.1 topg
48% FG - 41% 3P - 81% FT
Antoine Walker - Celtics
24 ppg - 9.6 rpg - 5.7 apg - 1.2 spg - 0.8 bpg - 1.9 topg
46% FG - 40% 3P - 72% FT
Another agreement with FBB. Robinson is an ELITE player. 30 points and 1.1 turnovers is insane. Beautiful percentages too. Toine is just one step below most of the all-stars but this is a bit of weak spot in the East. He has good numbers, but is stock negative, and 46% FG and 72% FT are a touch low (especially the FTs for a wing all-star). Still, not a bad selection.
Shooting Guard
Kobe Bryant - Magic
32.6 ppg - 8 rpg - 5 apg - 2.4 spg - 0.5 bpg - 2.5 topg
50% FG - 48% 3P - 93% FT
Ricky Davis - Heat
29 ppg - 6.3 rpg - 3.2 apg - 2.3 spg - 0.3 bpg - 2.1 topg
49% FG - 41% 3P - 92% FT
Kobe is obviously amazing, even FBB didn’t screw that selection up. Where I went with Ricky Davis, FBB went with Ray Allen, who is a worthy selection in his own right. Not much separates Davis and Allen – both are high volume, efficient scorers. Their #’s are extremely close! I give Davis a slight edge due to his rebounding (6.3 vs 5.7) and steals (2.3 vs 2.1) advantage.
To rectify that, I have produced my list of All-Stars, which is undeniably superior!
