What Song is your current squad? (West edition)
*Songs were selected based on the artist/team location and/or the team’s current outlook as of day 60 of the 2002 season.
Houston Rockets- Go Niners
Record- 13-20
Song- Jay-Z- The Takeover
Why?- The Rockets have jumped out to a 26-14 mark in the Midwest Division. The league’s highest scoring offense is fueled by Vince Carter and DD along with a strong assortment or shooters and bench pieces. Is a takeover in the works by Houston in the West? They’ll have to go through Sac-Town and LA most likely.
San Antonio Spurs- @ukfanjohn
Record- 23-14
Song- Foo Fighters- Best of You
Why?- I think we’re seeing the best of the San Antonio Spurs in the 2003 season since the start of BBS20. Their offense seems to be clicking, they rank 3rd in the league in blocks and 6th in steals. Jamal Mashburn has been the pickup this team needed to get over the hump and Ron Mercer has been very good at backup PG. Dave Grohl would be proud.
Minnesota Timberwolves – Jeb
Current record- 21-22
Song- Red Hot Chili Peppers- Don’t Forget Me
Why?- The Minnesota Timberwolves who were once an afterthought in the West playoff race are now in the thick of it. They recently got young but unproven wing Courtney Alexander to pair with sweet scoring wing Caron Butler and rookie forward Chris Bosh. The Wolves might be overachieving a bit but don’t forget about them come playoff time potentially.
Denver Nuggets- Royal
Current record- 22-23
Song- The Fray- How to Save a Life
Why?- The Nuggets have an opportunity to save their playoff life this year and not give a lotto away to the Jazz. On a roster bare with talent after trading all his assets away since he believed he had his pick back, royal then sent the pick back to Utah for the Milwaukee picks again which have been up for trade discussion. The Fray might be able to show him how to save his life and others.
Dallas Mavericks- @aaronjh
Current Record- 19-22
Song- Oliver Dollar – Pushing On
Why?- The Mavs are pushing on in the West with newcomers Baron Davis, Paul Pierce and holdover franchise cornerstone Dwyane Wade. Habes will figure out their direction soon enough but there’s some talent to be built on or had on this roster. As the frenzy approaches, we’ll see where the Dallas push is at.
Utah Jazz- JR
Current Record- 12-31
Song- Young T & Bugsey – Don’t Rush
Why?- The Jazz are in the middle of a calculated rebuild after winning the lotto and taking LeBron James with the #1 pick. They are not in a rush to win and still in a good position for a high lotto pick this off-season. Couple that pick with their other assets and this team won’t rush to build a winner again.
Memphis Grizzlies - Erbes
Current record- 3-30
Song- Elvis Presley- All Shook Up
Why?- The Grizz completed flipped their roster upside down and are starting to rebuild from scratch. Their roster features virtually 0 talent and an amazing tank point guard in Eric Snow. This franchise is all shook up after 3 straight post-season trips although all of those ended in heart break.
Sacramento Kings- ashes
Current Record- 31-7
Song- Cake- Going the Distance
Why?- The Kings are looking like the real deal this year and ready to make it back to their 2nd straight Finals after last year’s disappointing loss to the NY Knicks. The Kings lost Camby during free agency but are running strong still with Dong Reid and superstar wing Allen Iverson coming over from Boston. This team looks destined to go the distance this year.
]
Los Angeles Lakers- Nanz
Current Record- 32-10
Song- Mustard Feat. Roddy Rich- Ballin
Why?- The Lakers are ballin in the West right now and it’s not even close. Dirk, Kidd and Manu are loving playing together and the results have shown early on as they are just 1 game back from the West leading Kings. It’s very possible there is a Kings-Lakers WCF matchup with everyone watching.
Los Angeles Clippers- frangie
Current Record- 28-19
Song- Chris Webby- Rookie of the Year
Why?- Year one for full-time rookie GM Frongi has gone pretty well thus far. Looks like Larry Johnson has prolonged his career as a full time large SG and George Lynch plus Gordon Giricek were nice, cheap pickups. This team really needs an elite point guard to take it the next level after losing Bobby Jackson and it will show during the playoffs.
Portland Trail Blazers- Orlando Magic Johnson
Current Record- 26-18
Song- Party Favor & Dillon Francis- Shut it Down
Why?- The Blazers are one of the top defensive clubs in the league that no one talks about. Alonzo Mourning is still an elite defender and possibly another DPOY trophy in his future, Joe Smith and Chucky Atkins are getting over 3 steals a game combined and Raef LaFrentz is even doing his part. The Blazers are shutting down opponents on the defensive end and let’s see if it continues in the playoffs.
Phoenix Suns- Andrew
Current Record- 21-23
Song- Darude- Sandstorm
Why?- The Suns have been up and down this year in terms of performance. They are looking to hit their stride as they the 2nd half of the season. If they get can get re-energized like this 1999 track, they have a very good shot at their 2nd straight post-season appearance.
Seattle Super Sonics- 13rock
Current Record- 19-25
Song- Nirvana- Come As You Are
Why?- The Sonics are in their CY and will have to show who they are in the last 60 days of the season. They’ve tried to stir up their roster by bringing in a new backcourt tandem of Gary Payton and Nick Van Exel and brining in Bonzi Wells, shipping him out then bringing him back only to be dealt for Antonio McDyess. It might be too late to move the pieces around in a post Shaq deal but we’ll see how it all turns out for them.
Golden State Warriors - manasrai
Current Record- 10-37
Song- Santana- Soul Sacrifice
Why?- The Warriors have a lot riding on next year’s 2005 draft. It’s been a significant sacrifice that Manas has endured after quietly having a very good team up until last season. We’ll see if the bet pays off and they can get some good help for Gerald Wallace and Kirk Hinrich in the Bay area.
