Circling Round the Drain - round table at the bottom
Hello and welcome to the bottom of the drain, I'm your host Jeb who's going to attempt to not hang out down here too much longer and with me today in this round table are JR Erbes Galo and jahallstar
we dive into why we're all down here, the upcoming draft, some obnoxious stuff and time travel. So as not to make you have to read too much lets get right into it!
1 - So we all know that Dwight Howard is the prize of this draft. If you had to chose a type of player to end up with with the first pick of the draft is that player someone like Dwight? If not what kind of player is your preferred type to build a team around.
Erbes - The obvious answer is point guard. PGs dominate FBB and if you're tanking you're hoping the top pick is a stud general with low turnovers. However! A dominant big is 2nd in my book. Is Dwight dominant? Maybe! The ratings look mediocre especially when compared to Al Jefferson, but I have a feeling there's something juicy under the hood. Definitely makes me a little nervous though.
Galo- It’s tough to build around bigs in this league I think. Memphis got the closest to winning with a true inside focus but finally bombed it after 3 failed post-seasons. It’s not really working with the Sonics right now either. I think you need to have good bigs on the team but I’m not sure if they have to be your best player. Ideally, they should be able to block and rebound plus not turn over the ball and score some. In that regard, Dwight might be in the top 10 in both of those categories. He might still be the #1 player in the draft because he was so dominant in the NBA in his prime.
JR - You will always need a player like Dwight on your team. He will anchor a teams defense for 10-15 seasons. He is young will have solid potential, he may never be a stud scorer, but I dont care about bigs scoring much. Just grab that board and block a couple shots. He isn't the ideal piece to build around, but a great player to have on your team.
Jah - Dwight should be a great player no doubt. I don't think he is the ideal player to build around though. I don't think Dwight will end up as dominant as Ben Wallace is on the glass and defense and that is how good he would have to be to build around with his offensive shortcomings. Ideally I would like to build around a #1 option type player. If you can get a high volume, low TO high %'s PG that is ideal. That is why Nash has been so good so far in the league.

2 - Right now your team isn't the best, is there a player on your roster who you have some hope for? if there is no one that you intend to keep, will you be trying to trade back into the first/use your other firsts to acquire that robin to your batman?
Erbes - Literally the only actual player on my roster is Ronald Murray. He's not awful! 16 ppg on 47/78/41 with 1.6 topg as a first option on a very fast-outside team is pretty good in my books. I don't think he's a future star, but he could be a very good backup 1-2 in the future. Definitely an asset. Everyone else is literal trash. I might trade back if I get #1. There's some meat to this draft class and it might be smart to load up on younger players at the beginning of this rebuild to have more ammo to deal when I try to win. Maybe try to move down 3-4 spots and pickup another mid 1st? Probably only happens if I land #1 though.
Galo- I think Ron Artest should pan out and given by all the interest in him – he should be a valuable trade chip or wing to build with. I also have Kenyon Martin who has piqued a lot of people’s interest in a big starved league at the moment. Both are relatively young and have some room to get better.
JR - My team is on the come up. I am hoping to grab either a great player via trade or FA this off season. LeBron should develop into that Batman player, and Prince looks to be a great 3rd option. So I do need to add the Robin sooner than later.
Jah - I went young to start and there is no question about that. I made the playoffs the 2nd year which was a total suprise and then I missed the playoffs the 3rd year. So overall I do still have hope for a lot of my young players to take the next step. As my team is constructed I simply NEED to have Peja score 26+ PPG. The last couple of sims he has finally started to do so. I have high hopes for my hopeful 2nd round steal Luke Walton. He had a +4 TC and if he has another TC that good he might turn into something nice. I have my 1st this year which may be lotto and I plan to use that pick to find another piece for the future.
JR - Well this is my first BBS, so it would have to be allowing Bron and DWade at PG. That is the most interesting thing. Most commishes dont want player like this at PG because it is too big of an advantage. This could be seen as annoying to the teams without them, but we dont know if they will develop yet. The reason is because he throws in little wrinkles like this. Very interesting.
Jah - There were tons of players. I can't even remember them all. I think Spencer puts a lot of thought into his drafts though. He does research and trys to predict what a future player might look like. I'm pretty sure he made Greg Oden a beast before anyone even knew who he was. True he ended up being Sam Bowie Pt II but he was super good in college! Spencer always did like making star Euro's though. Especially outside bigmen who turned into 7 foot SGs and PGs!
Spencer dealing with us all.
8 - What made you chose this year to rebuild? Dwight at the top, other players in the class, just that time?
Erbes - Just that time. Lost Big Z in free agency. Got scared I couldn't win with Miller-Marbs-Smith-Grant. Looking back I probably could have. Oh well. I had no idea this was the Dwight class lol. Not a huge basketball fan so I get surprised with all of these classes and it's kind of more fun that way!
(sorry for stealing Z from you man )
Galo- It was time frankly. The hour had struck on our team and if we waited anymore, we would be in a lot worst shape. We’ve declined every season since 2000 and needed to tear everything down. I wanted to sneak into the 03 draft and ended up with the 9th pick but obviously everyone wanted one of the top 4 and it was too late to get into that mix. The 04 draft is nice though and there’s a lot of talent to be had.
JR - Well I started the rebuild in 04 so I could get Melo, we all know how that turned out. So I needed another season to rebuild, well wanted because I felt this class is pretty deep even before he released it. Always has good role players at the very least. Everybody needs cheao depth right?
Jah - hmmmm...I didn't choose this year to rebuild. It may have looked that way 2 days ago as I was the projected #6 pick. I might still end up lotto but I think we can possilby catch one of the teams in front of us.
9 - Honeymoon, what would you do/or did you do. looking like I wont be doing one til 2022 at this rate.
Here's where we go off topic for a bit boys - was feelin angsty when I sent this out
Erbes - No honeymoon for me yet. I'm not really a beach guy. I hate the heat, the sun, the sand, and the constant risk of being eaten by a shark. I'd opt for a European honeymoon. Irish coast is amazing. I love that country. I'd also go for Italy. Never been, but the food and wine seems pretty gooooood. Also maybe Greek isles?? Love Greek food and I imagine it's the perfect temp there all year round.
Galo- Me and the wife splurged on a trip to Moore’a (a French territory near Tahiti) and stayed at one of those over water bungalows like in Couple’s Retreat (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CzHoDZx0Qnw&list=PLbtLVv4tRFRFvkwJ3aoEC-I09prw0vVW2&index=27). We had an amazing time despite the 8 hour plane ride, then the 1 hr bus ride to the boat terminal then 45 catamaran ride to the island and another half hour to the hotel so it was basically a half a day of travel. Highly recommend it although it’s very pricey it’s really nice over there.
JR - Honeymoon do in bed? Or like where to go? Well im nasty in bed so we wont go there. I would go somewhere away so you can spend alone time. Maybe a resort nothing where you have to go do too much. Chill drink idk realxing things.
Jah - I love to travel and there are tons of places I haven't been. I've been to most of the USA and to Canada and most of the Caribbean. Austrailia/ New Zealand would be sweet!
10 - Questions for me? Ask away and i'll try and give you a reasonable answer.
Erbes - Where were you planning on honeymooning??
The one we both like the sound of the most is Scotland - we've both realized we're city folk - hiking and such isnt our cup of tea and we both like scotch ( me islay her highlands stuff) so that seems like it could be a bunch of fun
Galo- What’s with the name jeb? Is that a nickname? What’s your day to day job when you’re not BBSing it?
Jeb is a nickname my parents gave me because they didnt like the nickname Jake for my given name of Jacob, its been what people have known me for the majority of life.
I work in Architecture - thats what I went to college for. However I'd been looking to switch into some type of project management roll in IT or maybe into marketing... we'll see where life takes me after this Covid shit goes away
JR - What player do you covet the most in this league? Do you think you will ever get him?
KG, like Galo said, he sims very much like real life, I'm a Minnesota kid and grew up watching the big ticket.
Jah - Are you going to make the playoffs after your PP trade?
That's the hope man, its gonna be hard with the road schedule I've got down the line and the fact that I play god damn ashes and his monster team three fucking times.
Galo- I think Ron Artest should pan out and given by all the interest in him – he should be a valuable trade chip or wing to build with. I also have Kenyon Martin who has piqued a lot of people’s interest in a big starved league at the moment. Both are relatively young and have some room to get better.

He had a +4 TC and if he has another TC that good he might turn into something nice. I have my 1st this year which may be lotto and I plan to use that pick to find another piece for the future.
3 - Rebuilding as an idea: I've obviously gotten stupid lucky this last year, that's not normal, when rebuilding, do you normally plan to take more than just one year to retool and try and build something or are you short on patience and aim for one and done style rebuilds with luck in FA.
Erbes - Meh just tear it all down. It's so hard to pull off the 1 year rebuild. Most people who do already have a stud, a la Ashes having Kobe already. CY allows for 3 years of tanking, might as well use all of them and accumulate as many assets as possible. It's riskier, but also kinda fun to get younger players and try out different DCs. Trying to rebuild through FA feels like a bad idea. If you get lucky (like Jazz) then it makes rebuilding easier, but I don't think it's a strategy.
Galo- It really depends like you said on the luck and the pieces you get. I’ve got a bunch of low grade 1st round guys that might develop into much and some other picks coming into the fold that should be better. It could take 1 year or multiple – just depends how quickly guys develop with camps and TC.
JR - I dont like rebuilding for too long. It is boring and makes your overall record look bad in the league. I like 2 year rebuilds. Get 2 top 5-8 picks and acquire assets while you are tanking so you have more to trade off for a player that becomes available. Teams decide to rebuild on a whim at times. Right place right time is a real thing in FBB leagues.
Jah - I hate tanking. I try to go with short rebuilds as much as possible. That may be to my detriment sometimes as some teams just tank hard for 3 years and end up with 3 stars. Later on in leagues when hard cap becomes an issue for a lot of folks the FA route is a lot easier. Early in a league like this there are usually a lot of teams with cap space driving up the value of FAs.
JR - If I had to guess today it would be Vassilis Spanoulis. B- defense and C C scoring looks like he could be a steal. I dont know why I shared this hopefully hes not if I dont take him now.
Jah - I don't want to give away any of my sneaky targets as I have two early 2nd round picks. I do think Sasha Vujacic could end up being a nice PG though. He has pretty much the same ratings that Jay Williams came into the league with and he was picked at #8 I believe. If Sasha goes around #20 or so that could be a good value risk pick. ( a reminder from yours truly that Sasha is a crusty little bitch)
7 - Who is your favorite Spencer made draft pick in BBS history? Why are they your favorite. Why is Spencer the GOAT at making fun draft classes.
Erbes - Lol I'll be honest I have no memory of any other versions of BBS. I didn't even realize I was in 3 iterations so to make me remember draft classes is going to be impossible. But I'll go with Brian Grant in the BBS2020 Creation Draft! I love that man. Sucks I had to deal him. He deserves a championship!
Galo- I have to say KG again. I think he sims really like he did in real life and has only gotten better. Spencer is elite at making draft classes because he knows what he’s doing and he’s done this in a million alliterations. That’s why he’s the best commish there is.

4 - To piggyback off that last question, this is a fairly loaded free agent class, anyone stand out to you/fit the system you want to run well?
Erbes - Lots of good players out there - Duncan, Kobe, Dirk, etc. I'm sure it'll end up like last year where most offer to resign. But! Landing someone like one of those three ends the rebuild I think lol. Gotta try to win if you win one of those guys. Dirk would be the dream. Only 25, massive rebounds, low turnovers. Gimme gimme. I hope he finally realizes that Nanz would never treat him like I would and finally ditches that bum!!!
Galo- I’d love to land KG or Duncan via free agency but probably not possible with our cap situation and rookie contracts. I think both are those guys are a few of the dying breed of big men you can build around and win with.
JR - LOL. Well I mean Kobe, Lamar Odom, T-Mac, KG. among others. These guys would go great next to LeBron and Tayshaun. I doubt I get lucky 2 seasons in a row and sign a max worthy player. I am hoping though.
Jah - There are tons of potential FAs this year and who knows how many will resign. Nash is amazing, but KG or Duncan would fit in perfectly with my current team. If I had an elite PF to slid in why my roster it would do wonders towards a title run. Of course I am not going to have the cap room to chase after any of these guys so it doesn't matter for my team. I'm sure one or two of the main guys will end up changing teams and changing the way BBS in general looks!

5 - Lets say for arguments sake, 1 of the 3 CY teams makes it, of the potential GM's to step in to the two vacant teams , who do you think could come in and make the most noise off the bat, if you think they could do it with a specific roster, why that roster?
Erbes - None of the teams who are currently in CY are setup for any future success. They've all, fairly, unloaded all of their picks, and any GM that comes in will have to trade away any talent to get those picks back. The Magic have the best asset to trade in Kobe if they can resign him. If Insane or Play take over I could see either of them dealing him for a hefty package. If footy takes over I think he gets CY'd in 4 years. Just doesn't seem like he's easy to trade with and could see him hanging on to Kobe out of pride.
Galo- Looks like Play/Insane and Footy are next in line. It’s hard to say depending on the team and what assets they’ll have left but Footy seems most eager to make some moves and prove himself in this version of BBS.
JR - I mean idk if play is getting a team or insane. I would assume one of them to be the guys who make the most noice. Only because they have been gming in it already. More familiar with the file and GMs so that helps.
Jah - If Play comes in and takes over any of the three current rosters he could come in and make noise. All three of these teams have at least one elite talent on their roster. The Hawks have legit #1 and #2 options on the wings. All they really need is solid efficient role players to end up very competative. The Magic have Kobe and Camby. Those two will carry their defense. If they can get a legit #2 option on their team they will be very hard to stop. The Sonics will probably have to tear it back down, Shaq is a nice piece to get young talent with though.

6 - If you are a betting man, who's the player you think may be sneaky good in the back half of the first round, is Spencer going to give us another surprise euro or will he create another player who's ratings don't match whats under the hood?
Erbes - Really hard to tell without notes, but I'll go with Jameer Nelson. Feel like we haven't seen B- on a rookie coming into the league (although Harris also has B-) so that has me interested. If he goes +1 across the board in TC he'd be an immediate starter.
Galo- I have a lot of picks this draft and don’t want to give up my plans or who I like but there is a lot of depth in this draft and there could be a steal or two.

11 - pick an era outside of our current one to live in and defend your reasoning.
Erbes - Any point in the future lol. Really feels like at every point in history some group of people has been persecuted, hated, or put down. Just miserable so far!! Maybe in the future when we're all laying in pods and interacting through avatars we can be happy??
Galo- Wow, I would say probably the late 80s when I was born? Seemed like good times, everyone was having fun, the economy was doing well and I came obviously lol
JR - It would be the Vikings Age period 8th to 11th century. I am fascinated by the way they think and live. All the Vikings did was explore fight and have sex. Sounds like a good life if you could stay alive long enough to enjoy it.
Jah - 50's. I like the simpler life idea. You know all your neighbors. You know your milkman. People are not assholes. There is a lot of national pride. Just seems like a more pleasant time to live in. People always look at the negative now days. If 10 things go right and 1 thing goes wrong they dwell on the 1 thing. It is sad really.

12 - Where do you think the sweet spot of this draft is? the very top is obviously nice and Spencer has said he likes upwards of 30 guys in the draft.
annnd we're back on the draft for one last question

Erbes - Maybe like 2-8? Seems like you'll get a really good started with those picks. Iggy, Smoove, Deng, Okafor, Al Jeff... all seem like potentially above average starters to me.
Galo- It’s hard to say. I mean it doesn’t hurt to have a lotto pick in this draft since you should get someone you can improve on and have a decent asset but there could be value in the late 1st round too.
JR - I see 20-25 guys I would like to draft. I have 4 1sts, 3 look to be in the top 15 which is lovely. I will always use my seconds never know who the steal is!
Jah - I think top 5 all looks pretty sweet. After that around #14 is where the next slight dropoff is I believe.
Thanks for reading ya'll and remember the subway song is about a $5 foot long... oh and Spencer Loooooves Iggy
