1. Was MRR the obvious #1 pick?

autumn harold : No. He’s a solid pick, but I had Sikma #1 and would’ve respected Mike Cooper going #1. MRR’s notes were second tier or worse for lotto players, but he has a great base, should do 8+ RPG at PG, and 95-100 potential, so I think he’s as likely as anyone else to be the best player in the class.

DeeperThanSims : I'm not sure there was an obvious #1 in this draft. I was going Mo Cheeks all the way as he looks like a slightly worse Walt Fraizer, but I changed to Sikma last minute as he looks like the typical big that becomes an elite SF. MMR is fun, elite steals, good rebs at PG, etc. I think Sikma, MRR, Micheal Cooper and Mo Cheeks were all worthy of the #1 pick.


greeme : At first thought how could a pg with poor threes be the #1 pick and certainly not the obvious one. But then you look at everybody else and this might be the worst top of the draft we have seen in awhile. Sikma can't block. Cheeks is good but there are a bunch of pgs from last year I liked better so yah I guess mrr is the obvious 1 by default.

hf : I think so. If you can have a guy that does B+ rebounding at PG I think you take it.

2. Who was the most surprising lotto pick?

autumn harold : Ray Williams and Dave Corzine. Ray’s notes and ratings were good, and looked like a lot of the elite handling types Spence makes, but his handles are mediocre and his inside is poor, so I’m not sure he’s playable. Corzine I like, just thought the C+ rebounding would keep him out of the lotto.

DeeperThanSims : I thought Walter Davis was the BPA once we hit pick 8, so seeing him drop to 14 was interesting. Ray Williams was drafted way too early, the poor inside and mediocre handle killed him to me. Eddie Jordan was the pick for a PG.

greeme : eddie Jordan I guess. Looks like a solid backup but idk if that is what you want in the lotto.

hf : I didn’t like the royal pick of that PG. thought there was better options

3. Who was the steal of the draft?

autumn harold : Toby Knight. I had him #11 on my list. Highest B inside rating and C+ outside rating in the file, so he’s probably B+/B- scoring after an RC. Notes were good inside scoring, jumpshot, handles and post defense, and he has C+ rebounding, so he could be a great SG or SF down the line.

DeeperThanSims : I alluded to this already but I thought Walter Davis at 14 was amazing value. I assume being 23 contributed to the drop but he has a great scoring base, solid steals and perimeter defense to go with A scouted pot.

greeme : Earl Evans, eddie owens and bubba Wilson should all have gone about 10 spots higher. They won't be stars but they should all be solid players. At the top of the draft I think tree might have fallen too fat

hf : Earl Evans. And the guy you picked. If you move him to a big spot and he gets rebounding he can be a steal. Also like the PG ahsan got.

4. Which player(s) drafted in the 20's/2nd rd do you think will actually be, at least, solid rotational players going forward?

autumn harold : A lot of guys. I covered Knight already. I think Bo Ellis has a solid chance to be a nice third big if the rebounding develops. Definitely Eddie Owens at SF if you can get his outside up to B+ or so. Like him a lot. Earl Evans has elite handles and solid stocks. I like his potential as a backup big. Kenny Carr has elite inside and good handles. Depending on how his jumpshot looks, he could be a cool SF. Billy Ray Bates has good jumpshot, handles, quickness and steals, which I think makes him a nice combo backup candidate. I think Ahsan found the steal but just a premonition.

DeeperThanSims : I can see guys like Toby Knight and Kenny Carr sticking around as efficient inside/jumpshooting scorers off the bench. Marc Iavaroni has elite post defense and was one of the best rebounders in the draft. Maybe Eddie Owens can get stocks off the bench.

5. Which team has the best chance to stop the Hawks in the East?

autumn harold : It’s early to say. Nets have a well-rounded roster with upside on the wing. I like Play’s offseason. Wizards if they keep Gervin and get bigs are in the picture. Not many other teams looking to contend, but I think a few teams are going to tear down over the next few days, so we’ll see who adds upgrades.

DeeperThanSims : There isn't one.

greeme : well they took a small step back this year by moving truck. The nets look good with hayes all year.

greeme : Wizards or Bulls. Probably Bulls.

6. Do the Lakers come out of the West again this year?

autumn harold : Yes. I don’t see any threats. Mavs are tearing down (I think). Warriors need to keep Bing, but he and Connie are due to decline. Spurs don’t seem like they’re in the market to upgrade. Grizz, Rockets, Sonics, Jazz aren’t doing anything right now as far as I can tell.

DeeperThanSims : Yes, the Lakers are extremely good top to bottom and I'm not seeing much movement from the West teams. Spurs have the pieces to make things interesting though.

greeme : nope but I have no idea who will.

hf : Probably, the west is a shit show

7. Assume your CY was coming in one season but the upcoming draft was stupidly loaded. Would you risk it and tank or try to win?

autumn harold : I’d be willing to risk it. If you’ve drafted Rick Barry and Lou Hudson, you’re going to survive the CY, so tanking another year is no big deal. And even if you’re up against the wall, a high lotto is the most valuable trade chip you could have. If you’re in a situation where you could have a high lotto, you probably don’t have a good chance of resetting anyway, so yeah, it makes sense to me to tank.

DeeperThanSims : I almost always choose to win in the 3rd year. There's too much shit that can go wrong to leave it up to the CY year.

greeme : try to win and take advantage of everybody else tanking. If you have been tanking 3 years you are going to be too good to get a very high spot anyway unless you jump and maybe the draft will be magic bird and nothing else.

hf : Winning 42 is easy so yeah I probably would do my team sucked.

8. There's been talk of the PG spot feeling weakened. Do you agree that the PG spot is weak currently?

autumn harold : Yeah, I do. It’s not horrible, but last season, guys like Jim Barnett, Slick Watts, and Leroy Walker started on playoff teams in the East. That’s crazy. And the cream of the crop at PG isn’t on par with what it’s been for most of the league. It’s not like PG is in horrible shape though. There are plenty of starter-quality guys out there.

DeeperThanSims : It probably is a little weak compared to other positions. Jim Barnett was a bench guy and ended up starting for a good Celtics team. This draft should fix things. I expect MMR/Cheeks/Theus/Jordan to be nice.

greeme : not at all. Kobe was begging people to take jojo white for exp and had no takers. If the position wasn't so strong he would have been easy to move.

hf : Yes that’s why Brian Taylor is the goat.

9. The 2018 Nuggets hold the record for worst CY record, going 35-47. Does that get broken this season?

autumn harold : Worst reset season? It could happen. Let’s see what happens with Seattle, Dallas, Houston, and a few others in the West. Right now it looks like a fair number of teams in the West are trying to win or at least not awful enough to win <36 games.

DeeperThanSims : That's wild… I wish I could see standings from that year. I think that record is sticking.

greeme : this season? Obv not. Nobody is in cy. Ever? doubtful

10. Why did Matt Hicks retire?

autumn harold : There’s an NDA relating to his visit to Orlando. I can’t say more than that. What I can say is I’ve known Doland Basone all my life, and there’s no doubt in mind the accusations are true.
