Let's take a look at the wild wild off-season that we've already had...

Sacramento Kings Trade:
Nothing
Atlanta Hawks:
Sarunas Jasikevicius
footy recently took over the banished losanglife after he failed to make his Contract Year (CY). In footy's first move as General Manager of the Atlanta Hawks, he essentially dumped a solid player for cap space. Sarunas Jasikevicius is entering the final year of his contract and the move saves the Hawks a little over $5 M for this upcoming off-season. Sarunas is a low passing, low turnover, outside shooting point guard. Personally, I think he's vastly underrated here and could start on a championship team (as the 4th or 5th best player). Well, the mighty Sacramento Kings get richer with this move. They will have cap space due to Steve Nash and Jobe Bryant testing free agency, however, both are expected to re-up with the club this off-season. Sarunas plays himself as a nice contingency plan should Steve Nash bolt in free agency. If Nash is re-signed, Sarunas will be a fantastic 6th man, backing up both guard spots.
New York Knicks Trade:
Alonzo Mourning
Minnesota Timberwolves Trade:
Boris Diaw
Wolves 2004 1st Round Pick (Proj # 8; Unprotected)
Knicks 2004 1st Round Pick (Proj # 28)
Magic 2005 1st Round Pick
Alonzo Mourning has been tossed around like crazy over the first few seasons. He, along with Stephon Marbury, has been the league's whore. Everyone gets a turn with Zo! Each time he is dealt however, his value decreases. He's entering his age 34 season and has 6 long years left on his deal, but despite that, he's playing at an extremely high level and should continue playing to that contract for the next year or two. On the flip side, the Knicks sell reasonably high on Zo. Diaw is nothing special at all, but the prize of the deal is the 8th projected pick and the Magic 2005 1st. Should the new Orlando Magic General Manager, Amar, wish to rebuild, that pick should net the Knicks a nice player from the Magic's roster (Iverson? Camby?). If not, it'll be a mid range pick for the Knicks, which ain't bad. The 8th pick will bring Skillz a juicy young prospect to develop. I like this deal for both squads and look forward to seeing the moves that the Knicks pull off the rest of the off-season.
Houston Rockets Trade:
Dimitris Diamantidis
Jerome Moiso
Rockets 2007 1st Round Pick
Los Angeles Lakers Trade:
Dirk Nowitzki
Wow! Talk about a surprise blockbuster. @ilovebbal and the Rockets previously pulled off a huge trade for Vince Carter, now add another batman to the roster in Dirk Nowitzki. Dirk and VC should be one of the leagues best pairings on the wings, if not the best. The rest of the roster is a work in progress. Bobby Jackson is the team's PG and Etan Thomas is the teams only legit big man. Thomas is a sleeper and could be good for the Rockets, especially if he gets camped out. The team will definitely struggle with depth and will need to hit on their MLE offer during free agency. The Lakers, on the other hand, acquire two players and a pick in a decent draft. Dimitris Diamantidis is a 24 year old scoring machine who rarely turns it over. Jerome Moiso is a decent player who gets paid like a star. At the end of the day, I really like this deal for the Rockets AND the Lakers. For the Rockets, anytime you can get the best player, you do it. Worry about the depth later. The Lakers are in great shape as well with Kidd - Manu - DD - Moiso - JO. I'm sure more moves will be coming for Nanz and the Lakers. Time will tell.
Indiana Pacers Trade:
Eddie Griffin
Joel Przybilla
Maciej Lampe
New Jersey Nets Trade:
Joe Johnson
Jerome Williams (Junk Yard Dog)
Malik Rose
Another WOW type move. The Pacers trade for ....another shooting guard? They already have Arvydas Macijauskas on the roster, so the move may be curious on the onset for Indiana. However, it's likely that one will be dealt and I'm certain that the Pacers are not done dealing yet. For the Nets, they acquire 3 young big men. Przybilla and Griffin both can rebound and block well, while Maciej Lampe looks like he has some promising potential. It would not shock me to look back in 2-3 seasons and Lampe turns out to be the best player in this deal. He's only 18, so it's quite possible that his potential jumped to 100. We'll see. Malik Rose is a serviceable 3rd big on an expiring contract, so he's not a bad "toss-in". I do like this move better for the Nets of course, but the Pacers need a big shake-up and one is certainly coming this off-season. Both Eddie Griffin and Przybilla werre due to enter free agency and would command decent money. Indiana now only has to re-sign Joe Johnson (if he is not dealt prior). This is just step 1 for the Indiana Pacers.
Indiana Pacers Trade:
Gilbert Arenas
Joe Johnson
Malik Rose
Jerome Williams
Los Angeles Clippers Trade:
Tim Duncan
Larry Johnson
Khalid El-Amin
Pacers 2006 1st Round Pick
Oh, look at that! The next move for Indiana is here. The Indiana Pacers traded their two best players in Gilbert Arenas and Joe Johnson for the arguably league's best player in Tim Duncan. Also heading back to Indiana from Los Angeles is overpaid, but solid Khalid El-Amin. El-Amin spent two seasons in Indiana previously and now will take over as the team's starting point guard. Larry Johnson, enters the final year of his contract and should be a nice piece to help the Pacers contend. Are the Pacers essentially the Clippers now, just plus Arvyas? We'll see. For the Clippers, it was a long time coming, but they finally move on from Duncan and get two young stars in Gilbert Arenas and Joe Johnson. A great starting back court to start their rebuild and re-tool.
Minnesota Timberwolves Trade:
Darko Milicic
Jeff Foster
Dallas Mavericks Trade:
Love and Friendship
maybe a beer if they ever meet
Interesting deal. A beer may be worth more than Darko. Darko did have a lot of value in the league prior to last training camp, but here he goes in a salary dump move for the Minnesota Timberwolves. I like the pickup for teh Mavericks. Darko looks like he can block and is barely camped, so many he can be something decent. Foster is an expiring, depth big who can rebound well. Nice solid rotational piece. I'm not sure what the Wolves are trying to do, I think they want to clear salary for Paul Pierce? But they may be better off just letting him expire.
Indiana Pacers Trade:
DerMarr Johnson
Sacramento Kings Trade:
Kerry Kittles
The Pacers admit here that the signing of DerMarr Johnson last off-season did not work out like intended. Don't get me wrong, Johnson is decent. He can score efficiently and rebounds well for the G/F position, but lacks volume. Additionally, he's one bad training camp away from being a bad, bad contract. On the flip side, he's a good training camp away from being a pretty damn good player. For the Pacers, this clears a bit of cap for a guy who was not going to start for them. For the Kings, it's security should Kobe Bryant bolt in free agency. Given that Kobe Bryant is likely to return, DerMarr Johnson will be a nice backup wing for the Sacramento Kings. Solid move for both.
Chicago Bulls Trade:
3rd Overall Pick in the 2004 Draft
Denver Nuggets Trade:
Carmelo Anthony
Ok. What the fuck? Last season, the Denver Nuggets traded their entire team for Carmelo Anthony essentially and deemed him the franchise player and untouchable. Fast forward a year later and he gets traded for the 3rd pick in the draft and the team selects Al Jefferson. Sheesh. The Nuggets invested a lot into Carmelo Anthony already with RCs and ACs and now will have to start all over again with Al Jefferson. For the Chicago Bulls, this is a dream. They trade their lottery pick for a better player who has been recently camped. Now the Bulls GM Play won't have to write articles for Mr. Anthony. This move also teams up Anthony and Amare Stoudemire (who needs a juicy TC). I love this move for the Chicago Bulls as Amare and Melo are two of my favorite players. Maybe he can get Duncan!? Hear that, Play ?
Denver Nuggets Trade:
Nuggets 2007 1st Round Draft Pick
New Jersey Nets Trade:
20th Overall Pick in the 2004 Draft (Beno Udrih)
Won't hate on this move. By 2007, the Nuggets will be good or CYd. Udrih is an interesting prospect who may have high handles and will protect the ball in the mold of Jose Calderon (he won't be as good as Mr. Calderon). For the Nets, they cash in on a pick who would not contribute much and gain a future asset, which can be very valuable. Only time will tell/
