We are embarking on yet another thrilling year of free agency in BBS, marking one of the most exhilarating periods in our league calendar. The anticipation builds as Day 1 commences later today (until bids are missing), followed by Days 2 and 3 (with slightly less excitement), ultimately leading up to the highly anticipated annual training camp. This year, we find ourselves amidst a market where some stud players are commanding some big ole deals, creating a narrower field of available talent for those looking to improve after a tank fest. This year’s headliner is Bill Walton himself!
Day 1 Top Targets
The Youth
World B. Free- World was not my world but he led the sixers into the playoffs after being selected #2 a few years ago. This past year he jumped from 16 to 25 ppg improving his fg% 3% and assist per game. Hell he will likely command a max and be worth it in 2-3 seasons. Will he return to Philly or set his sights elsewhere? Miami is also the favorite here if he does not return given that the Kings have a young pg.
Scott Wedman- The Weedman himself. Scott had a strong season last year getting starter minutres for the first time but was part of a trade where break sent a lotto for him and then decided to try to go for protection on the pick vs making playoffs ahead of CY (bold move). Now the wolves face a spot where they can not max him but someone else can. Is Scott worth a max right now? Probably not but he has the juice to be a real good player since he can board and score already. Ideally for both parties he returns to Minny on a fair deal.
Gus Williams/Slick Watts- Both solid players in this duo for Chicago providing a different kind of game. Will Play pay one or both or go another direction?
The Vets
It is certainly an interesting vet market this year as there are no players who jump out at me for super max but a lot of talented players who can likely be flipped for a pick or provide value to a team trying to win.
Butch Beard- Honestly I almost wrote an article just on Butch himself but I figured legit no one would care. Traded for Oscar to winning 2 rings what a stud for real. Butch is in his early 30s but can do it all and is one of those guys I have a feeling plays harder beyond the ratings and stats. Hes been doing over 25 ppg on 45% with good stelas and low Tos. Dude is tough
Ron Boone- One of the more interesting characters in the league. Boone is an absolute star with a huge TO problem he just cant kick. Boone can rebound and score 30 ppg and is 32 years old. How much would you pay this guy? I got no idea
Elvin Hayes- Oldie but goodie? Need a big to board and block? I don’t see the pistons letting him walk unless someone drastically overpaid. Guy walked into the DPOTY award after being a bit under rated for some time.
Don Adams- Seemingly one of the safer guys to pay since he can rebound so well. So even if he declines he will still be useable. Adams also at 31 wasted most of his prime behind Bingo and when he left came close to a few titles. Brian did not move him and now likely will overpay but have a sign and trade lined up. Adams is good and avail SF in a league where that is a hot need.
Chris Ford- I thought a lot more of Chris Ford and he got a bit of a rep damage being moved a few times this past offseason but hes a true SG and a quality one. Slightly under 30, Ford can and should be doing 25 ppg with good %, good steals and low rebs/Tos. Last year he saw a hybrid/ bench role. Someone who needs a scoring punch will be happy with the former 100 pot candidate, just not on a max
Carl Fuller- At 32 he wont command a lot of money but a very solid player who has risen to the occasion in past seasons. A A big with good FT % and a proven track record. Sign me up for a 3 year commitment.
Old ass pgs who will definitely be useful to someone
