DB'S 2061 MOCK DRAFT PREVIEW
A few beers in writing this on Father's Day...Cheers.
1. Denver Nuggets (9-42)
Sidney Moncrief SG 6'4'' 180 22 B- B- B- B+ C A
Spencer's notes: Good jumpshot, handles, quickness and steals. Solid inside scoring, perimeter defense and strength.
Right now the worst team in the league is the Nuggets though they have a lot of games left to play. Royal needs a lot of help with this roster and yes he definitely could have went big man with this pick. Having said that, I think Sidney Moncrief has all the tools of being an all-time stud. Coming in with the B+ defense and C rebounding is VERY NICE. It appears that Royal may be in his contract year next year as well. If this is the case I would seriously consider trading this pick for big time talent if I was him. He needs a lot of help and he needs it quickly.
2. Utah Jazz (12-47)
Bill Laimbeer C 6'11'' 245 22 B- C C B+ A- A
Spencer's notes: Elite strength and jumpshot. Good inside scoring, handles, steals and post defense.
Gotta be honest fellas. Completely forgot Marty was the Jazz GM. I asked myself like 5 times who the fuck is it and had to keep looking. That's on me. Hand up. I think Marty goes with the next best player on the board and that has to be Bill Laimbeer I'd think? He comes in with B+ defense and A- rebounding. That's as nice as you can get for a big man rookie. Bill will be a key piece going forward in Utah. The Jazz can start to build that front court and really dominate the boards.
3. Toronto Raptors (11-40)
Bill Cartwright C 7'1'' 245 22 B C C- B+ B A
Spencer's Notes: Elite strength. Good inside scoring, jump shot, handles and steals.
Braz takes the next best big on the list and that is the other Bill...Bill Cartwright. I don't think you can go wrong with this pick either. Another really good big man coming into this league that will start right away. Love his strength, will be great from the FT line, hold the rock and provide some stocks in steals. Hopefully you can work his blocks as well and something comes of that. Another great selection here. You can't hate this at all. I'd love it myself...
4. Seattle Super Sonics (12-37)
Kiki Vandeweghe SF 6'8'' 220 21 B B+ D+ C+ C A
Spencer's Notes: Good inside scoring, jumpshot, 3 point shot, handles, and quickness.
This feels like a no brainer at this point. JR goes best player available here. Kiki looks like a NASTY offensive force and one I hope is available to me at 5, but I feel like there is no doubt he will be taken in the top 4. Coming in with a B B+ scoring reads definitely 20+ in his rookie season. Kiki also seems to have good handles and quickness with the latter correlating to high volume. Love this pick. Rebounding could use some help and his defense but that will come with rewards and a nice TC. Nice!
5. Orlando Magic (15-43)
Mark Eaton C 7'4'' 275 22 C+ D+ C- A- B B
Spencer's Notes: Elite blocks, post defense and strength. Good handles.
I think you gotta go big man here. Mark Eaton looks like a powerhouse big coming in at the 5 spot. Elite Blocks, post defense and strength. Work on his rebounding and you have a front court centerpiece for decades to go alongside Magic Johnson. Nice pick here for the Magic. Horny for Eaton? This is what the Press will be writing in their headlines. I will try to calm them down but we already have the horniest player and GM in BBS and potentially the world. What's the point?
6. Sacramento Kings (18-40)
James Donaldson C 7'2'' 275 22 B C- C- B+ B B
Spencer's Notes: Elite inside scoring and strength. Good blocks, post defense and handles.
I may be a little nuts here...but James at this spot is just what Chipper needs. Kings need an ELITE big man with inside scoring and strength. He has the blocks, the post defense and handles...supposedly. Chipper needs bigs. He has the guards. I love this pick and I think its the right selection here at the 6 spot.
7. Phoenix Suns (18-34)
Andrew Toney SG 6'3'' 178 22 B B- B- B- C- A
Spencer's notes: Elite quickness. Good inside scoring, jumpshot and perimeter defense. Solid handles and strength.
I think Andrew goes BPA available here. Andrew Toney probably realistically doesn't fall this far but he might. Not many teams need a guard right now. I guess he could be good trade bait but yeah a lot of teams need bigs and there aren't many around... (I wrote this before i saw more bigs...haha) You really gotta hope you land in the top 5 otherwise it is SLIM PICKINGS in these parts. I like Toney's game though. Could be a very efficient scorer. His rebounding and defense need work but overall could be a very solid player in this league. Also Andrew has to select a guy named Andrew? Only makes sense...
8. Milwaukee Bucks (21-30)
Vinnie Johnson SG 6'2'' 200 23 B+ C+ D+ C C B
Spencer's Notes: Elite inside scoring and jumpshot. Good handles and quickness. Solid strength and jumping.
What a very interesting pick here at 8. Vinnie Johnson coming in as a guard with B+ inside scoring and C C defense and rebounding. Kinda intriguing. Kinda fun. Could be a very sneaky good pick. I love the elite inside scoring and jump shot. He has all the tools to be a very well rounded guard. I wonder how good of a scorer he can be. Pump his ass and find out? Andy could have a steal here at 8.
9. New Jersey Nets (From Minnesota Timberwolves 20-31)
Greg Kelser SF 6'7'' 190 22 C+ B- C B+ C B
Spencer's Notes: Good jumpshot and quickness. Mediocre inside scoring, 3 point shot and handles.
For some reason Break traded his first and Greeme has it so here we are! I think Greeme selects bpa and makes this guy into a stud. Seems like nice ratings coming in. Could be a very efficient scorer with good defense and solid rebounding. Don't hate the pick. Don't love it. Doesn't get my juices flowing. But what does these days...haha....
10. Seattle Super Sonics (From Detroit Pistons 23-27)
Larry Smith PF 6'8'' 215 21 C D+ C- B A- B
Spencer's Notes: Elite offensive and defensive rebounding and strength. Good handles and post defense.
Horny Harold doesn't have his pick and here it is with the Sonics at the 10 spot. Larry could honestly go earlier but I fucked up and missed them on the list lol. So here we are. Great pick for the Sonics at the 10 spot! An amazing rebounding with good handles and post defense. We're not sure about his stocks so that will have to see. But the Sonics could use big men and Larry fills a need. Who doesn't love a rookie coming into the league with A- rebounding? Amazing!
11. Indiana Pacers (26-30)
Rick Mahorn PF 6'10'' 240 21 C+ C- C- B+ B B
Spencer's notes: Elite strength. Good handles and post defense. Solid blocks and steals.
The Pacers seem to have a lot of talent. Not really sure what's going on over there or what they're missing. I guess some better defenders. If that's the case, Rick Mahorn is a big time defender who fills a big need. He provides stocks and comes in with all the tools to potentially be a starter day 1. I think Rick Mahorn could honestly go anywhere from 6-13 just depends on who is drafting and what that teams needs are. The more I look at this draft the more I see how deep it is. I fucked up and didn't see Larry Smith or Mahorn in this draft and I definitely think there is a shot they go sooner. We will have to wait and see. I opened up another peroni. Cheers.
12. Miami Heat (28-29)
Earl Cureton PF 6'9'' 210 22 C+ C C- A- B B
Spencer's Notes: Elite strength. Good jumpshot, handles and post defense. Solid steals and inside scoring.
EARL CURETON? Why not? Coming in with A- and B ratings you would take that. Maybe you can pump earls ass with rewards and make him a pretty good 5th starter. I don't see why not! Does this man have blocks to go along with those solid steals? We shall find out soon. Don't hate this pick at the 12 spot for the Heat. Shooters shoot.
13. Seattle Super Sonics (From New York Knicks 31-24)
Sly Williams SF 6'7'' 210 21 B- C C- B+ C+ B
Spencer's Notes: Elite handles and steals. Good jumpshot and post defense.
Slyyyyy Williams. Interesting pick here to close out the lotto. The Sonics have potentially 3 lotto selections which is pretty sick for JR to continue to build the foundation for his Seattle Squad. Sly comes in with not the most amazing offensive CATS but has Elite handles and steals which is very intriguing. Good 5th starter perhaps or nice backup wing. Elite defensive ratings. Can control the ball, hit jump shots and play really good defense. Might be an underrated pick as we head out of the lotto.
Thanks y'all see ya next time!
A few beers in writing this on Father's Day...Cheers.
1. Denver Nuggets (9-42)
