Draft Grades the top 10
Welcome to the BBS Draft review! Its Friday morning and I wanted to recap the draft and 10 picks are through so ill do that for now! Please subscribe and give me 5!
I felt like this was a good quality draft. It is fun when there is not a clear number 1 and maybe even 7-9 quality players. Last year everyone fought for Magic or Bird and this year GMs were happy until Chipper at pick 7 but still quality picks through this point.
1. Utah Jazz - Bill Laimbeer C 6'11'' 245 22 B- C C B+ A- A –
Analysis - The prince of darkness is fitting for Marty. I like his base. Broph likes it so good pick right? Not so fast some hate it! I really think its fine since the Jazz will suck next year. Any of the top 5 could have gone here besides Kiki. Marty will camp him out quick and see what he can do. I wouldn’t be surprised if he was like 13 rpg out of the gate.
Analysis- Sydney was my assumed number one pick. Should be a stud out of the gate if camped before TC. I would love to see Royal host a pod to get himself goin for CY but the man is busy. Sidney cans core and handle and should eventually be an elite defender. I would expect him to come out the gate as a solid #2 option with 25 ppg 6 boards 2 steals 1.5 TO.
3. Seattle Sonics - Mark Eaton- C 7'4'' 275 22 C+ D+ C- A- B B
Grade- A
Analysis- I mean Eaton will be a BBS dream out the gate. Could be blocks leader as a rookie and his rebounding looks fringe. JR can start his rebound with a foundational player like Mark. Even his handles are good. Mark coulda gone 1. Solid pick
4. Toronto Raptors - Kiki Vandeweghe SF 6'8'' 220 21 B B+ D+ C+ C A
Analysis- To be critical on myself here I loved Donaldson but drafted 7 bigs in the last few years and also liked Kiki a lot. He will be a stud scorer and hopefully soon. If he can develop some boards/stocks he will hopefully be a valued starter with a cool name.
5. Orlando Magic - James Donaldson C 7'2'' 275 22 B C- C- B+ B B
Analysis- The draft article showed a lot of GMs loving JD, some even saying hes worth the top pick. Play made a good point on how to camp him out to start with elite base. He has B pot but should be a great combo player with Magic and Mo Cheeks. James had some of the best notes weve seen in a bit. Great pick up for the Magic
6. New Jersey Nets (from phx) -- Bill Cartwright C 7'1'' 245 22 B C C- B+ B A
Analysis- I mean this guy was the 6th man in a good 6 man draft and Greeme went from no pick to starting his rebuild around a solid player. However, player alone this would be a B. Bill lacks some fundamental is of FBB like blocking so I see him more as a 3. Could Greeme groom him to be the next Bob D? If anyone its him who can. I like his base of scoring handles and strength. Man had a sweet jumper IRL.
7. Sacramento Kings - Larry Smith PF 6'8'' 215 21 C D+ C- B A- B
Analysis- I would have liked to see Chip trade this pick for BPA but he drafted for need instead. He took a player who has a solid outlook and might be playable as a rookie but looks more like a third big who lacks blocks. Elite boards to me is very interesting though so lets see what type of impact he can have on the court. Or even in trade talks.
8. New Jersey Nets(from Wolves) - Vinnie Johnson SG 6'2'' 200 23 B+ C+ D+ C C B
Analysis- at pick 8 Greeme gets a guy who has a sick nickname and elite inside scoring for a SG. He can handle and he is strong. We will assume he will command volume early and if he develops any sort of outside we might be looking at a top scorer. Don’t stand infront of the microwave they say.
Analysis- The Pistons wanted to switch it up and get younger. I think Ollie is sick so trade moves the grade 1 lower but Habes gets a guy he likes. Like the city of Detroit and the GM of Detroit Manhorn is known for his strength. He is so strong that during an arm wrestling competition he once broke the table after claiming victory. Rick also has solid blocks, steals and seems tobe a good board man. I can see him being a high quality starter.
10. Seattle Sonics(from Pistons) - Calvin Natt SF 6'6'' 220 22 B C C- B C+ B
Analysis- Another guy I like in a class sprinkled with elite attributes. Natt has elite jumper and good inside scoring. Don’t expect his 3 to ever develop but he seems to already be a solid ball handler with quickness and solid defense. If he can get boards on a decent clip he can be a good starter for a team with balance focus. Seems to be a good rebuild fit with Eaton to me!
