Boston Celtics - C
Don’t like seeing Ahsan continuing to run it back with this roster. He’s usually one of the most openminded and creative trade partners out there, but he doesn’t have a point guard or playable bigs other than KAJ and doesn’t seem motivated to deal me Greg Smith. Hate to see it.
Miami Heat - C
Pete trade didn’t make any sense to me. Darwin was a great pick and Mel is a really nice starting big. Pete doesn’t meet the Heat’s timeline and they don’t really need him. Not much else going on this offseason.
New Jersey Nets - B-
Tearing it down but keeping a guy like Wilkes just seems like a way to miss out on top picks. I don’t mind the Cartwright pick. He could be a nice SF or a Rudy type at PF. Didn’t like the Vinnie pick. Otherwise just seems like a standard teardown. Solid.
New York Knicks - C+
I think Mike wants to tear down, but for now it just looks like he lost Hayes and doesn’t have any rebounding. Guessing their deals just haven’t happened yet so not putting much stock in this grade.
Orlando Magic - B+
Landed a second franchise player to pair with Magic. Brought on Marv for cap, which is nice if they’re trying to win, though IDK what Don is planning this season. Added a nice second or third big in Heard and a nice SG in Ford for mid/late firsts. Really nice, low-cost additions plus a great draft choice. Nice stuff by my friend.
Philadelphia 76ers - C
Losing Gray to a 3/30ish deal hurts. Cureton was a nice draft pick. Not much else going on here–seems like they should unload everyone other than King and Cureton and rebuild.
Washington Wizards - TBD
I liked the Kermit-Smith deal a lot. The Issel deal not so much, but seems like it was motivated by the HC. Not sure what grade to give because they’re going to need to make other deals to be in position to reacquire Wilson, Gene, and Niemann.
Atlanta Hawks - B+
That Wardell signing was great. He was one of two MLE offers I had out on Days 4+5 and I wish I had canceled the other. He looks like a stud SG. Slick was an awesome addition too, though they don’t have a third big. I didn’t love the Ford-Sly trade; Sly looks a bit positionless to me, but DBW can afford to gamble, and the Wardell signing more than made up for it.
New Orleans Hornets - C
Losing Phil hurts. Can’t really blame Jah because I wouldn’t have expected him to get paid like that. But that’s pretty much the offseason for the Hornets. There are some nice bigs out there for pretty cheap right now. Hornets should be good if they can get one of them.
Chicago Bulls - N/A
Play was talking about rebuilding but made the right decision in running it back. Bulls look great, just nothing to comment on for their offseason.
Cleveland Cavaliers - N/A
Nothing doing. Let’s see Gilmore and Haywood deals?
Detroit Pistons - B
Mixed bag but I like where I landed. Didn’t get great value for Ollie and Dino, but I needed to get assets to build out the roster. Guys like Clemon, Newlin, Blondet give me flexibility and depth that I was missing last year. Only thing that really worries me is over-relying on Rory Sparrow, but that’s why I’m writing this article: to camp his ass.
Indiana Pacers - A-
Got great value in Toney at the back of the lotto. Issel’s a huge upgrade at SF. I like Walter Davis, but his ceiling looks like a top ~15 SG, so pretty great move for Styro. Pacers look like a borderline contender.
Milwaukee Bucks - B+
Made two major perimeter upgrades and added pretty nice frontcourt depth. I think they may be a good big away from locking up a reset, but nice move by Andy to get his 62 back as a hedge if things don’t work out.
Toronto Raptors - C+
Didn’t love the Kiki selection with Donaldson there. The Buse and Ray acquisitions were fine, but I think going for a reset this year is a mistake. They’d be better off bottoming out. Add a lotto to Cliff, Mitchell, Tree, and Kiki, and you’d have the trade chips to build something nice. As is, they’re gonna try to reset with a so-so squad. I’ve been there. I’m still there. It’s no fun.
