62' Lotto Review/Grades
1 Denver Nuggets- Kevin McHale
PF 6'10'' 210 23 B+ C+ C- B C+ A
Notes: elite inside scoring, jumpshot and strength. Good handles and post defense. Mediocre blocks.
Analysis: No brainer pick here. Denver was very fortunate to jump to snag the big man out of the University of Minnesota. McHale should be a pillar of the building blocks for the Nuggets long term.
Grade: A
2 Washington Wizards (from Sonics)- Eddie A. Johnson
SF 6'7'' 215 21 B B C- C+ C A
Notes: Good inside scoring, jumpshot, handles and quickness. Solid 3 point shot.
Analysis: The right pick in my opinion. Johnson should be a balanced scoring wing when it’s all said and done and possibly top 25-28 points a game. Don’t think he’s promising defensively but should fit the bill for the Wiz. Also on a side note, if this pick was really autoed, might be the first time in BBS history?
Grade: B+
3 Philadelphia 76ers- Mike Gminski
C 6'11'' 250 21 B C C- B C+ A
Notes: Good inside scoring, jumpshot, handles, post defense and strength. Solid steals.
Analysis: In any other draft, Gminski probably barely sniffs the lotto but in this one he’s top 3. He should be a solid big if he can block some shots but sounds like he’s better in the passing lanes. Again, don’t hate the pick especially if Gminski has high potential.
Grade: B
4 New Jersey Nets – Jeff Ruland
C 6'10'' 240 22 C+ C C- B+ B B
Notes: Good inside scoring, jumpshot, handles, post defense and strength. Mediocre blocks and steals.
Analysis- Typical Greeme pick. I had Ruland much lower on my board – with that said, he has a good base to be a starting big. But, lack of stocks knocks him out of the top 10 for me. He should be solid but wished NJ would have traded down to get Ruland in the lotto maybe and get something else. Then again, it was a pretty crappy draft so can't blame him too much.
Grade: C
5 Chicago Bulls- Darrell Griffith
SG 6'4'' 190 22 B B- C- B C A
Notes: Elite jumping. Good handles, quickness and steals. Solid inside scoring, jumpshot and 3 point shot.
Analysis- Feel like I remember Griffith being a stud in a previous iteration of BBS. Either way, I had Griffith in my top 3 so nice pick for Chicago for him to fall to their laps at No. 5. The elite jumping makes you question what the rest of his inside scoring and strength looks like but should be a very solid wing in BBS at his peak.
Grade: A-
6 Dallas Mavericks – Danny Ainge
SG 6'4'' 175 21 C B+ B+ B+ C- B
Notes: Good jumpshot, 3 point shot, handles and quickness. Solid steals and perimeter defense.
Analysis – I like this homer pick for Brian. Ainge should be very solid and with good handles – maybe he can be moved to point guard and be more effective on the glass? Not sure but he’s been a premier league exec for sometime now in real life so believe Spence respects that possibly.
Grade: B+
7 New York Knicks (from Pistons) – Joe Barry Carroll
C 7'0'' 225 22 B C- D+ C+ C+ A
Notes: Elite inside scoring. Good strength. Solid jumpshot, post defense and steals.
Analysis – Good pick from Sargo here. JBC projects to me like an elite 6th man type especially if he gets his defense and stocks up. He’s probably pretty slow footed but maybe he can play some backup scoring at 3-4-5 spots. Again, another player that probably picked higher than he would in most other drafts.
Grade: B
8 Milwaukee Bucks (from Wolves) – Kelly Tripucka
SF 6'6'' 220 21 B B- C- C C A
Notes: Good inside scoring, jumpshot, handles and quickness. Solid strength and jumping.
Analysis: Keep seeing this rookie’s name and looks like Tri’puke’a to me. Anyway, hope his game is better than his name. He should be very solid on the offensive end but probably slipped to No. 8 due to his lack of defense. Another autoed pick here for Andy but probably the right one.
Grade: C+
9 Sacramento Kings (from Lakers via Jazz) – Frank Brickowski
C 6'9'' 240 21 B C+ C- B C+ B
Notes: Good inside scoring, jumpshot, steals, post defense and strength.
Analysis: Solid pick for chip at 9. Brickowski probably projects as be a decent role player throughout his career but maybe he’ll develop to something more as a stretch 4 or SF. Would have loved Hodges or Matthews here but with the glut in the backcourt in Sacramento, Chip probably looked at need more.
Grade: C+
10 Phoenix Suns (from Wizards) – Craig Hodges
SG 6'2'' 190 20 C A- B- C C- B
Notes: Elite jumpshot, 3 point shot, quickness and handles. Mediocre steals.
Analysis: In any other draft, its likely Hodges is a not a top 10 pick but here we are. The Long Beach sharpshooter gets taken here early and there’s a fair amount to like and dislike. He’s only 20 so there could be some potential there under the hood for longer development along with coming in already as the class’ top shooter. Not sure how much volume he’ll have and his defense and lack of boards scare me for a wing but he could be a nice backup 1-2 on a playoff team.
Grade: B
11 New Orleans Hornets – Michael Wiley
PF 6'11'' 200 19 B C+ C- B- C+ B
Notes: Good jumpshot and jumping. Solid inside scoring, post defense and strength
Analysis: ‘Riverboat Jah’ strikes again! The Hornets clearly taking a chance on a high risk possibly high return guy on the one of draft’s youngest players. At 19, maybe there’s something behind the curtain that New Orleans sees. He’s got interesting attributes with a solid inside scoring and jumper. Can possibly transition to be a SF – not a bad bet here at the end of lotto.
Grade: B-
12 Miami Heat (from Knicks) – Wes Matthews
PG 6'1'' 170 21 C+ C+ C+ A- C- B
Notes: Good jumpshot, handling, quickness, steals and perimeter defense
Analysis – I’ll be honest – still surprised that Kobe traded into this draft. I understand this was one of the center pieces of the Pistol Pete deal but maybe Matthews will blow up in TC? Positive notes on jumper, handles and defense. If the volume is there and he’s in fact got some potential, Miami maybe cooking with gas on this one.
Grade: B-
13 Orlando Magic - Al Wood
SF 6'6'' 193 22 C+ B- C- B C B
Notes: Good jumpshot, handles and quickness. Mediocre blocks, steals and inside scoring.
Analysis – Intriguing prospect. Kind of a tweener at SF at 6’6 193 but maybe he can move to the SG spot if he can’t survive at SF due to his rebounds. If he’s got volume to go with the rest of his game, I think Dan and the Magic have some thing here. I don’t hate the pick but Woodson and Drew were still on the board but Orlando has Magic Johnson and Mo Cheeks already so understand the rationale on taking a chance on ‘getting Wood’.
