Toronto Trades:
Marvin Barnes
Raptors 2069 1st
Minnesota Trades:
Kermit Washington
First off, we would like to thank Kermit for his professionalism and dedication to the Timberwolves organization during his tenure here in Minnesota. When we took over management, one of the first things we made clear was that this was going to be a long term project rebuilding this roster slowly but surely, collecting as many draft assets as we could to build a young nucleus to develop during the next 3-4 years. Kermit is someone we made clear to that we would look to move, and although he's been made available publicly since our arrival, we haven't received much interest for the big man.
This deal here puts us in a financial bind for the next 4 seasons, but if we were ever going to do something like this, the time is now. We're happy with receiving another first round pick for next season, which gives up 8 in the next 2 seasons to play around with. And from what we've seen in these drafts, we've developed some confidence that we can bring in some nice young talent to our organization.
Barnes from a production stand point is still an above average player, and best case scenario maybe he retires before the contract is up. Worse case scenario is he becomes a useful $20M expiring for us to use as a trade chip in our contract year if we don't achieve much success until then. The point is we have the 4 years to be able to tolerate this from a contract year standpoint, as well as our own time line that we've set out.
We have a significant amount of salary already coming off the books this upcoming off season, and from our first free agency experience, we're confident that we can find some really good cheap veterans who can still produce at a high level if we decide to go in that direction to collect more assets or try to contend at a sooner rate.
We would like to thank the Toronto Raptors organization as well for an easy negotiation process, and wish them and Kermit the best of luck moving forward.
