Tank Daddy Flex’s Early Season Race to the Bottom Standings
Wow so many teams tanking this year! I remember when it was just me, Play, and Manas battling it out for the opportunity to draft a 9/10/2 big… fuck my life. Anyways! New blood in the league has caused a few more teams to join the tank race this year and based on the early draft looks Spence posted the other day it seems like a pretty good idea! Looks like up to 10 very good to great prospects (SEE DRAFT HERE)! Fun! Let’s take a closer look at all the teams under .500 at this point and what their outlook/chances are for the #1 pick!
11. Indiana Pacers
Record: 6-7 (.462)
Point differential: -3.6
Rebounding differential: 2.9
Turnovers per game: 14.6
After a super hot 5-0 start after a DC input error, the Pacers have promptly gone 1-7 to fall out of the early playoff picture. Pretty shocking to see a team with Tim Duncan not plowing through the East, but the signs were there. The deal for Duncan left the Pacers with few workable assets, forcing the likes of Antonio McDyess, Tim Thomas, and James Posey into the starting lineup. Additionally, it looks like El-Amin is a bit of a turnover monster. The Pacers do have 2 firsts and Arvydas to deal for additional assets, but should probably make a move sooner rather than later!
10. San Antonio Spurs
Record: 10-12 (.455)
PD: -2.0
RD: +4.8
TOPG: 12.1
At first glance, the Spurs should be much better! Positive rebounding differential, low turnovers, Crawford, McGrady, etc. But then you realize they don’t have a single soul who can play defense. We all know letter grades are near meaningless, but they don’t have a single A guy on the roster and the only guy putting up more than 3 STOCKS per game is also turning it over 3.3 times per game (Odom). A move to shore up the defense seems obvious. Otherwise the Spurs will be handing another lotto to the Warriors this year.
9. Denver Nuggets
Record: 7-9 (.438)
PD: -5.7
RD: -0.3
TOPG: 13.9
I think the Nuggets are trying to lose!? They are, but they’ve gotten unlucky with some wins it looks like. Al Jeff doesn’t look bad and I don’t think he’s been camped at all looking at the player pages. Pretty cool! However, Royal did max out Udrih and forgot to camp his handles?? He looks like a pure scorer, but not sure anyone can tolerate 4 topg from their PG. I’d expect Royal to move Payton, Shandon, and maybe Udrih soon for additional picks and get their tank going in the right direction.
8. Orlando Magic
Record: 8-11 (.422)
PD: -2.6
RD: -3.0
TOPG: 14.7
Poor Trapstar. If he hadn’t dealt Barbosa for his pick he’s easily a playoff team (and probably knocks Chipper out of the playoff picture - crazy how a single move can shift things so much!). The plan was to get his pick back then sell everything off. After trying to gift AI to his friend he’s gone into his turtle shell and it looks like he could be on the road to mediocrity this year. I actually think he should go for 42! He’s already got 8 wins which could literally be the ceiling for the #1 pick this year, but is a good start on 42. Maybe try to add a big and a bench piece and he hits 42 in a league where about half the teams are somewhere on the spectrum from mediocre to crap.
7. Boston Celtics
Record: 6-12 (.333)
PD: -4.3
RD: -3.0
TOPG: 14.1
After just missing the playoffs last year (but hitting 42), Brian came back with avengence making a ton of moves to ensure that his core is not wasted and to make sure he gets at least one championship run out of them! Kidding! Well maybe that happened in some alternate universe, but in the only one that matters Brian got trolled so hard he almost quit, disappeared, hasn’t posted a trade block, and is straight up wasting Bibby, Sheed, Walker, and Theo. Hard to imagine a team with that core is already 6 games under .500, but here we are. The trolling stuff was bad, but you’d think a guy with like 10k posts would just post through it and make us forget about it. But nope. Now it’s just hanging around him with a similar stench shared by his team. Oh well. Maybe Break can do something with this team in 4 seasons.
6. Atlanta Hawks
Record: 4-14 (.222)
PD: -12.6
RD: -4.8
TOPG: 16.8
Finally we get to the teams who are actively trying to tank! After some, frankly, unneeded drama about getting his pick back this offseason, Footy has put the pedal to the tank metal. The entire team is devoid of any talent. Maybe Stack is the best player? Not bad for a tanking team. He should be able to hang on to some of his B/B talents to pick up some RCs at the deadline, too. Footy has done a good job undoing the mess that Styro left.
5. Golden State Warriors
Record: 3-12 (.200)
PD: -9.6
RD: -4.5
TOPG: 14.9
Manas is an extremely enviable position this year with 4 picks in, seemingly, the deepest draft we’ve had so far. But what he really cares about is #1 and he’s doing a damn good job of going for it. Kevin Martin has been a shining light (seriously, .504 from 3 pt…) and GW has been extremely solid. Are they too good for the tank?? GW is expiring and might find his way out of Golden State by the end of the year to ensure Manas gives himself the best chance at #1.
4. New Jersey Nets
Record: 3-14 (.176)
PD: -11.5
RD: -7.9
TOPG: 15.2
Lol what the fuck happened here? I’m kind of at a loss for words, honestly. I’ve never seen this happen to a Greeme team. No rebounding, no defense, turnovers at every position. Just ugly top to bottom. Too many guards and not enough bigs. Story of the league, still? Not sure I love another team accidentally falling ass backwards into a tank, but here we are. And it’s terrifying. However! I don’t think Greeme stays down here. All of the top teams are set at the positions he’s got resources at. I think he makes a move and shoots for 42.
3. Memphis Grizzlies
Record: 2-14 (.125)
PD: -9.0
RD: -2.8
TOPG: 15.2
All I’m going to say is if I end up with the 3rd pick I’m going to quit. You heard it here first! Dwight is kind of the perfect tanking 1st pick from last year. Doesn’t do anything great yet (although peek that B+ rebounding now!) and still turns it over as a non-options. Wait am I just listing his negatives at this point… ugh. With Snow leading the tank charge I think we have a good chance to keep losing. Need to deal Howard and Ekezie though. Howard scores too much!!! Someone take him please.
2. Chicago Bulls
Record: 1-9 (.100)
PD: -19.7
RD: -6.7
TOPG: 15.9
I can’t believe the Bulls are actually worse this year than they were last year. Even after another year of development for Amar’e and acquiring Hughes/Melo! Like how? Anyways, the tank is led by a point guard even more valuable than Eric Snow in William Avery. What a tank general. He’s a huge reason the Bulls have close to a -20.0 point differential!! Wowser. So bad and yet so good for the tank.
1. Seattle Super Sonics
Record: 0-14 (.000)
PD: -21.7
RD: -9.6
TOPG: 17.9
Just disgusting. Look at those differentials and turnovers. I did not think anyone could put together a worse team than what I did last season and yet here we are. Only Mark could do this. Enjoy Chris Paul you fucker.
Other Notes:
Teams at .500 include the Heat and Rockets. I don’t think either of these teams are trying to tank and have just gotten off to slow starts. Start beating more teams!!
Predictions at Day 25:
11. Spurs
10. Pacers
9. Nets
8. Magic
7. Celtics
6. Nuggets
5. Warriors
4. Hawks
3. Bulls
2. Grizzlies
1. Sonics
Hope you enjoyed! We’ll take another look later in the season to see how we’re doing on these predictions!
