1. Starting off I've noticed many people mentioning that wings have no value here. Like I understand Marv Roberts is 36 but to not even be able to move a player with his production for free seems strange to me. What would you say is the reasoning?
Galo: BBS moves really fast is the main thing meaning a wing that is 36 doesn't have a lot of value after time and regression. Some older vets seem to hold up better than others but it really depends. Young studs have the most value at this point and older vets just don't have the same level due to regression and usually bigger contracts.
NYBomber: It's a combination of things. First off, wings that can put up buckets isn't some big accomplishment here. 30 point wings may carry value but if you are in the 20-23 range, eh. Nothing special. Then there are contracts. I don't know Marv's current deal but if he's making substantial salary then there won't be much of a market for him. Bigs who block and and SF's who can rebound are much higher priorty then SG's or even SF's that don't rebound as well. PG's and non blocking bigs would go after. Lastly, there's age. He's 36. There is no benefit in taking on an older player if you are rebuilding unless you want to do someone else a favor, like the player or randomly decide to win now. All that creates a pretty blah market (and honestly, makes for no market at all) for someone like Marv. I think an idea i've heard before is allowing older vets to be cut without issues but that's a discussion for another time.
Lasagna: Salary end of story, the teams competing cant afford him, the tanking teams don’t want him
2. From someone who is coming in 60+ seasons in, I'm sure some guys might be burning out or expecting a restart. What is your personal preference moving forward? This makes it tough sometimes to wanna invest time in a team when you come in and a league is already that far in.
Galo: Once we get to 01, Spencer said they'll be a restart. I'm good with just finishing this era to be honest since we're already 68 seasons in.
NYBomber: I think it would be cool to go back where we started from. I wans't here in the very beginning but I believe it was 2000? Fuck it. Let's go full circle. Sometimes the interest can be rough but other times, it's cool. It's a nice change of pace overall from life and I've been enjoying it mostly.
Lasagna: Spence saying he is planning on restarting at 2000 has me wanting to quit. No reason to stay
3. I've dealt with a couple GMs so far, and mostly all negotiations have been smooth although I'm coming in with a seller's mentality. I know some of the guys here but who would you say are some of the toughest GMs to get deals done with through your experience?
Galo: Tough to call those out. I would say Jah and Greeme kind of come to mind. They don't trade a lot but usually know what they want and won't deal unless they get it. In a way, it's good but other ways, it's difficult to work with that mindset when you have you have your own goals.
NYBomber: Greeme can be rough. He tends to be set in what he wants and those times he isn’t, he’s someone that tries to squeeze every last drop. Skillz was like that as well. Can go from a 1st or lotto protected 1st or top 20 protected 1st to top 25 protected 1st to….yeah. There are some GM’s that you might have to wait a few days for a response.
Lasagna: Cleveland and me
4. Looking at rosters, free agencies, and even the draft prospects, they have some of the best rating's I've seen for rookies. Would you say the league is inflated or has this been the type of ratings for guys the entire time?
Galo: It's been inflated for a while now. Young superstars have the most value (MJ, Magic, Hakeem etc) then everyone else. In the beginning, it was very flat in terms of starting ratings but it's built up over time.
NYBomber: I mean, yeah, it’s for sure inflated. It was going to happen eventually. The fact that it’s taken so long is pretty impressive overall. I do think Spencer is trying to bring it down some but at this point, don’t think it’s really possible to go backwards without screwing some people over.
Lasagna: Entire time for the most part, though during the 47-70 drafts, players pretty much sucked other than 1 to 3 players
5. Is there anything you personally would like to change about something here?
Galo: CY needs to be revisited due to lack of options on the WL in my opinion. Change it to 5 seasons or change the barometer to 45 wins if you miss in the 4th year.
NYBomber: Not sure. I would love to see a shift in the CY. Essentially, if you hit the 4th year and don’t reset, you still keep your job but have to make the playoffs or else your lotto gets placed to 13. Something like that. I would also love to see morw articles being written. Not sure how that happens without adding to the inflation. Maybe some way to get older vets more value. Maybe allowing each team to cut 1 per season or every few seasons without being called for tanking. Maybe VET camps to help their value. Idk.
Lasagna: CY, still a good idea but sucks now since not enough wait list people
6. Going back to the draft files, has there historically been many serviceable players in the 2nd round? In other leagues I've been in, it's almost like 2nd rounders are useless and most drafts end up only having 25 guys with 2nds being cut. So IMO, I like the idea of being able to find value late in drafts. Thoughts on this?
Galo: Yes, I've found some valuable guys in the 2nd. Sometimes it's a crap shoot but there's guys that can pop potentially in TC and helps you with roster construction.
NYBomber: 2nd rounders have some value. There is typically a steal or at least a high potential guy available. We’ve had plenty of great players drafted in the 2nd round. I might have done an article on it many seasons ago. I don’t remember. Maybe I should do that.
Lasagna: Spence usually hides someone every 2-3 years
7. I've seen some leagues do away with the contract year, others never introduced it. What is your stance on it at this stage of the game?
Galo: See answer to question 5.
NYBomber: Kind of answered this earlier but yeah. I mean I like the idea of it but it’s difficult when you get rid of guys and have a hard time replacing them. We’re kind of there currently. Might be time to find a way to work around the CY.
Lasagna: is this the same question again?
8. A salary cap of 48M and 78M seems reasonable but there seems to a ton of crazy contracts thrown out there. What happened in the past? Has the cap always been at this same number or was it adjusted to be accurate with certain years (2000s)?
Galo: It's always been the same. It should have been raised but Spence likes it the way it is. I think it helps keeps a level of parity and balance in the league and from contracts getting out of control.
NYBomber: Always been this way. It’s been a pretty interesting ride. Things were fine. Then we hit a time where everyone was overpaid and you had really good FA’s during the season because most teams couldn’t afford to sign them due to their massive contracts already on the books. Then, between teams relaxing and AARP rookies (at one point, we had rookies at like 25 and 26) resigning for pretty cheap, salary caps balanced out. We’ve gone up and overall but never had to implement anything there.
Lasagna: Cap sucks, should be increased to match increases
9. What would you say are the most important factors in building a viable roster here? Position wise, system wise, etc.
Galo: Usually outside offenses work best. Obviously stocks are important and low turnovers. Good shooting percentages. I've always won with an elite level PG here so always think that's important but some guys think differently on that position. There's different ways to win but sometimes you can't avoid player regression so you have to trade and make adjustments.
NYBomber: I love having a top tier PG. Need some great rebounders. Some high level scorers. I was hoping to test out how important blocks really are in building a team but it’s not been going great so far. We’ll see. A SF PG is obviously an amazing building block and I showed why in a prior article.
Lasagna: PG and 2 bigs
10. What sets Spencer apart from other simmers? Always hear great things.
Galo: He's a beast. Not sure how he processes transactions, camps, trades, DCs as quickly as he does then sims right away. He's really consistent and we get through seasons in 3 weeks at the most - sometimes sooner. That's the big differentiator.
NYBomber: Spencer is pretty consistent with simming. He’s putting a shit load of time and effort into doing this and I don’t know how many people really would have the time, energy and overall desire to do it. It’s been great and it’ll for sure be sad when it’s time to shut things down.
Lasagna: Just an ordinary every day dude. That is awesome
