Ah well I must say after a little time off its very nice to be back and I think i found a better balance with my addiction to the sims. Now its Monday night and I have this shitty Jets Chargers game on and have been thinking of a lotto review for a few days and have not had the time. When an article doesnt feel like a chore it is a real pleasure. That being said we had a pretty interesting lotto with several guys not getting full minutes with the team. I will grade the picks (to date) because i think its way too soon to do any sort of redraft.
1 Cleveland Cavaliers - Ron Harper - Grade- A
Pre Draft B B- B- B- C A
Current B+ A- B B- C+ B
Stats: 35.2 26.8 6.9 4.1 1.4 0.9 2.3 .459 .865 .451
Analysis - A lot of people said this was a weaker draft and I personally did not look at notes and think Harper is 1. However, I must say Steve did a good job here as zthe man had a great TC/ camps going +1 inside +3 outside and becoming a C+ rebounder. Currently even as a wing, Harper is 3/3 with Rookie of the month awards. The game thinks hes the top rook and he is aleady a near 30 scorer. Good pick I suppose, have nothing to hate
2 Boston Celtics - Len Bias - Grade B
Pre draft A- C C- C+ C+ A
Current A- C+ D+ B+ C+ A
Stats: 33.4 18.3 6.9 2.1 0.9 0.6 1.0 .451 .719 .284
Analysis- If I am being honest, Bias would have been my pick based off his IRL hype, tragedy and notes. I would have assumed very high potential and I am pretty sure his current ratings display him fully uncamped. He went up outside and defense which is nice but his A- could be all jumping. Frankly in current state hes not hitting 20 ppg and has improved FG% from pre but his outside shot and FT are far away and he doesnt seem to have stocks. Camps can save him but the facts make it harder to grade much higher. He is a 23 year old rookie but i guess time will tell.
3 Miami Heat - Dennis Rodman- Grade B+
Pre Draft B- D+ C- B A+ A
Current B- C- C- B+ A+ A
Stats: 30.6 9.8 12.3 1.5 0.9 0.3 1.2 .375 .709 .000
Analysis- I think you gotta take Rodman for what he is, a board man. If you look at it with those expectations he is incredible. He is doing 12 boards with low TOs in 30 min. In his peak if he gets stronger he can prob push 15 per 36. I am not sure he will score or block but if he can be stock positive and stay on the court he will be helpful. His elite post D is likely something we wont see on the stat sheet but id love a deep dive article on how opposing PFs do vs him. Kobe, of course is not happy but he is Rodman and built pretty well vs what one would and should expect from Rodman hence a positive grade here.
4 Memphis Grizzlies - Roy Tarpley Grade B+
Pre Draft B C C- C+ B A
Current B C C- B B+ A
Stats: 12.3 3.7 3.7 0.5 0.6 0.9 0.2 .357 .795 .000
Analysis - With all the moves the Griz GM has made you'd think Roy would have been traded by now but he has maintained in uniform and buried in the DC. Based on notes I thought Tarpley would be better on offense and worse on defense but the small sample size shows the opposite. Some thought he could have gone 1 and despite not showing too much so far his rebounding improved in TC and he got +15 pot. He is a lock to be a 10/11/2.5 big and if the scoring develops to 20 ppg like it could he may be a redraft #1 or at least an A grade at 4.
5 Minnesota Timberwolves - Chuck Person - Grade C+
Pre Draft B B C+ C C+ A
Current B+ B+ C+ C C+ A
Stats: 18.6 9.3 4.3 1.7 0.5 0.2 0.7 .421 .679 .348
Analysis- I am pretty torn here. Coming off the bench for a player doing 14 ppg per 36, shitty % on a bad team but a good TC and letter grades on offense. Oh and he can not defend and likely never will. He might find value as a high rebounding SG or maybe even with the new SF rule but right now I see good Inside and 3 in notes and neither have translated so I would be sitting in disappointment. I mean if you look at him vs the other top rookie win Ron is twice the player (yes I know he was taken 1). Chuck has been camped but is not fully camped. Sadly I could see him just getting lost in the shuffle with other wings his whole career but hey give me an A, A wing and thats nice.
6 Detroit Pistons (from Warriors) - Brad Daughtry Grade- A-
Pre Draft B+ C D+ C+ B- A
Current A- C D B- B+ A
Stats: 30.4 19.6 9.6 1.5 0.8 0.7 0.9 .466 .842 .000
Analysis- Brad was the top pick in this draft IRL and had a solid NBA career. Here he fell to 6, likely bc of the poor blocks but he is already blocking some shots, more than expected. Brad got the pot boost and is an instant bucket. He is camped out but that allowed him to go +1 on offense, Defense and +2 on the boards out the gate. the pot plays in here for sure as Brad will certainly be a 25/12 player and if the stocks fall right he is a star. If they don't you build around that and get stocky guys and keep him a #2 option at the PF role. I like the pick, especially with his performance in comparison to others.
7 Washington Wizards - Mark Price Grade B
Pre Draft C B+ B- C D+ A
Current C A- B C+ D+ A
Stats: 13.4 6.2 1.6 3.6 0.4 0.0 1.5 .453 .964 .381
Analysis- Well at pick 7 Lums does not make this analysis easy given he is not really playing picks 7 or 8 as he puts forth a valiant effort to reset. I liked Mark Price pre draft and his notes. Elite jumper and quick. He went +1 outside, handles and defense so far. He touts strong fg% and amazing FT in small sample. It seems his handles are currently shit and I liked Horny more than him but Lums got both. If he was serious about contending he would break his own heart and trade both guys for talent but it seems he is going to be patient. Time will really tell here.
8 Denver Nuggets (traded shortly after to Wiz) - Jeff Hornacek Grade B-
Pre Draft C B+ B C+ C- A
Current C A- B C+ C A
Stats .5 4.2 1.6 1.5 0.2 0.0 0.4 .507 .923 .417
Analysis- I thought Jeff would be a good scorer and it appears his % hold true to that. He is not getting any burn to prove it but he is apparently a Lums all time favorite. I originally considered moving him to PG to be a barkley running mate but once I saw how much Lums loved the guy I build on prior Royal's original offer of Barkley for Ewing which Lums told me about. I think he was a solid pick considering the draft and place but nothing amazing. The next guy taken looks better.
9 Chicago Bulls - Otis Smith - Grade - A
Pre Draft B C+ D+ B C+ B
Current B+ C+ C- B+ C+ B
Stats: 10.7 7.8 2.2 0.4 0.5 0.3 0.3 .527 .862 .294
Analysis- Play as done really well developing B pot players and wings in particular. He came in with good inside scoring with solid stocks, so a good foundation. In a few years with SG TCs you will assume the jumper and 3 can improve. What impresses me the most is that in very small min you can see he will steal the ball, likely surpass a block and has very strong fg%. Pretty good pick of a guy who was overlooked by most.
10 Portland Trail Blazers- John Salley- Grade D
Pre Draft C+ C- C- B+ C+ B
Current C+ C- C- A- C+ B
Stats 29.8 5.5 7.6 1.2 0.5 1.4 0.5 .391 .750 .000
Analysis- More of a project pick and his notes were led with good handles which is not ideal for a big. Not too much to love here considering hes getting 30 min per game and not much to show for it. I could see him turning out decent I guess but for now its not a sexy pick. Especially looking like an L infront of Nate
11 Sacramento Kings- Johnny Newman- Grade D
Pre Draft B- B- C- B+ C B
Current B- B+ C B C- C
Stats 11.5 3.6 1.9 0.5 0.3 0.1 0.4 .374 .878 .394
Analysis- I have nothing nice to say here given he was traded in what looked like a near salary dump, hes fully camped, has high post D and playing like shit. But if anyone can turn him into a decent back up 1/2 its Greeme.
12 Milwaukee Bucks- Nate McMillan Grade A+
Pre Draft C+ C+ B A- C B
Stats 19.3 9.7 3.4 3.6 1.2 0.6 0.8 .450 .694 .391
Analysis- Spoken of by many as top pick of the draft. Nate increased his pot rating, went +1 outside handles and defense. He has good fg% and steals. His only issue is he shares the court with another PG who has the starting role. Great pick. i would be ecstatic to take a guy like Nate at 12 this coming draft.
13 New Jersey Nets- Chris Dudley Grade B+
Pre draft C D D+ B+ B B
Current C D+ D+ A- B C
Stats 0.3 2.7 2.6 1.1 0.3 0.4 0.6 .421 .500 .000
Analysis- I liked Dudley at my pick at 8 and he has the foundation to be a solid big. If Greeme can find it in his heart to get 3 ACs and camp him out he looks like a solid starter for sure.
1 Cleveland Cavaliers - Ron Harper - Grade- A
Pre Draft B B- B- B- C A
Current B+ A- B B- C+ B
