Went to a Redskins game last year against the Jets. More Jets fans than Redskins fans and it felt RIGHT.

Saying that one of Redskins/Chiefs/Braves/Indians is less worse than the other is semantics. I mean I am not Native American so I am clearly going to have an ill-informed opinion on this. On the surface though I don't particularly agree if this is the case or not. The Chief of Native American tribe was a heralded, central figure who was looked up to and a leader for those amongst him. One person might look at it as mass genocide while others might look at the Sitting Bulls, Chief Joseph's among many others fought valiantly against the suppression of whites during Manifest Destiny. I am not really here to make which call is right and what isn't based on how I prefaced this post.

I think its fine to have this kind of discourse, but we've seen that most people aren't capable of this level of critical analysis.

Also we saw what Cleveland did with a Chief. Not very respectful.

I think a lot of pride that people have for their ethnicity, background, race, etc is a lot in part due to the struggles that specific group has had to face and the hardships that they overcome. Being Irish, a lot of the family pride dating back for ages was the struggle against tyranny and religious persecution not only in Ireland but also that when we faced off when we were coming off the boats in the 19th century, being forced into arguably indentured servitude or the Army and the fight to try to make it as immigrants in a new world A lot of our minority groups whether Hispanic, African-American, Asian, etc and especially Native Americans are going through the same trials and tribulations in the modern day that many people of my ancestry went through in the 19th century. This is why you see flags of every nationality displayed proudly at rallys, in windows on cars, etc. You see a major part of the identity that has molded them. That's a big part of what makes America so fucking cool. Now I have never felt religious persecution, or had grain withheld from me when my family starved, or was forced to go fight for the Union after a week long trip where 1/4 of my family got sick and probably died....however these stories form robust identity, identity gets passed down with time generation upon generation, these things mold people and families years and years later. That's also fucking cool as well. Chief Wahoo obviously seemed to be pretty fucking terrible, but he is gone now. "Indians" is probably a name that should be changed based off why we call Native Americans that in the first place. Redskins have been beaten to a T. However just off the reading and knowledge I have amongst the Chiefs and what they meant to the people they presided over, who fucking knows. People of native decent might love and take sense of pride in a major city that uses the conduits of their communities, past and future, as a representation of them. They might get a massive hard-on when 75,000 people perform a tomahawk chop, or it might be some racist bullshit in their eyes and it needs to be changed. I certainly don't know as of this writing. I just think we do a disservice as a bunch of "above average intelligence middle-upper class white guys" and just lump in all these associations under one net and just lump them as "bad" without taking a pragmatic approach and try to understand them individually and what they actually mean as a whole to the people most affected by it rather than rash generalizations. I try to abstain from conversations like this for multiple reasons, but I think the discourse is generally healthy. There's someone on here who can make a rebuttal to this and I can look in the mirror and say "Wow, I didn't think about it from those optics. Damn I am a fucking idiot and that makes sense." That's important to me more so than my overall opinion on an issue. End of rant. BTW, we beat the Wizards this sim.

I very briefly scanned all this but I'll summarize my thoughts this way:
If the Washington "Bullets" can change their name (albeit the new name is amusing) due to gun violence in their region, I don't see why these names shouldn't change.
