I very briefly scanned all this but I'll summarize my thoughts this way: If the Washington "Bullets" can change their name (albeit the new name is amusing) due to gun violence in their region, I don't see why these names shouldn't change. Where does it end though? Is Notre Dame going to be forced to change it's name in 5-10 years? Maybe at a minimum its mascot? Certainly the Ole Miss and UNLV's of the world would have to change their names before hand? Utah? What's the difference between a Ute and a Chief as far as perceived negative connotation is concerned? This may sound silly, but does it get to the point where a school like the University of Miami has to change their name due to the impact on damage and lives that Hurricanes pose on the world every year? I am just not sure how far this thing goes the next 20 years and I think it's a fair argument to have if we are using the Washington Bullets as an example. |

Understand shared stadiums make this hard, but who cares in general about team names beyond cities aside from those situations?

For the masses however, I think that's somewhat of a draconian approach to mitigate the issues we are seeing. For me, there's a threshold between identifying/eradicating potential problems and creating unnecessary problems and we need to draw a line in the sand on what that is. It would be really interesting to see a case study on what the economic impact is though on these teams by omitting logos/imagery outside city names from their merch. |
