In this one-on-one, we see what chipper has been up to. We see what his thoughts on his past situations are along with looking around the league currently and the future a bit.
1. How you been?
2. Tell us about the job.
chipper : I'm one of two accounting managers at the Hilton Atlanta- there's 1250 rooms. Department used to have 15 people pre-pandemic- now they've gone offsite with a lot of responsibilities so there's only 7 of us now. And there are still enough responsibilities for 12 people sooo it's tough. But fun. And I'm making 50% more than what I made in my last position, and the benefits are twice as good since it's a corporate Hilton property.
3. Looking back, what are some things you would change regarding your tenure?
chipper : Everything? Probably everything. I tended to overthink things and panic trade when I didn't need to- particularly with the Bucks and Pistons versions. And I tended to fall for Skillz snake-oil bit. I was better with the Kings at not doing any of that, but I still fell into the overthinking trap from time to time.
4. Which job (Kings or Pistons) did you feel you did the best in?
chipper : I had better success with the Twyman-led Pistons team- as I made it to the Conference Finals and ALMOST knocked you guys off. I was very close. But I think I did better at building a team with the Kings through drafting- for whatever reason, I've always been a really good drafter in this league. I did well to get Purvis where I got him, and Theus was pretty good. Other players did well that I can't think of off the top of my head.
5. Looking from the outside, what's the ideal situation you would love to take over?
chipper : Having not looked at ANY teams yet, I'll say the Hawks just because that's my favourite team IRL lol.
6. Say you take over the Spurs, what would be your plan with the Marques contract?
chipper : You're gonna make me look at rosters aren't you? OK, let me go look.
*goes to look*
DEAR GOD IN HEAVEN WHAT THE HELL IS THAT THING!?!?!? BURN IT WITH FIRE. In all seriousness- he's a good player- but not THAT good. That's like the- was it Kuminga that I bailed the Sonics out of to get Arizin? Whoever that contract was- this is comparable.
7. Who are the easiest guy(s) to trade with? Worst guy(s)?
chipper : There's a lot of people that are easy to trade with. And there's one guy that's easy and also the worst- Skillz. Love the dude- and he's easy to trade with because he will send you the full on offer with explanations. But he's also the worst because he can absolutely sell you snake oil and you will fall for it. But it's always fun tyo read his PMs. Other guys that are easy are Braz, Play (I know he and I have never gotten along- but when he's willing to talk trade it's easy to get something done if he likes what he sees. You don't have to hound him and I appreciate that), and yourself.
8. Before getting into the draft questions, you seemed to know a solid amount about these old-school players. Tell us about yourself when it comes to who you root for and who were players you really liked growing up.
chipper : Oh, I'm a diehard Hawks fan. But I've always been a big NBA history guy, so I know a ton about the old-school and obscure players. That's just from reading a lot as a kid about any sports history books I could get my hands on. My all-time favorite Hawk is 'Nique- but the all-time favorite player that I remember a lot of his playing was Dikembe Mutombo. That was my dude. And he's the nicest dude ever- ran into him at Kroger once. Shareef Abdur-Rahim was also a favorite and I ran into him as well when working at the Embassy Suites a few years ago.
9. What players would you be looking forward to drafting in the future?
chipper : I mean- assuming we're coming back around again- this current crop of players in the real league is fun. Would like to see how Trae/Luka look now that we're a few years further in the future from where we were when they first came in.
10. Spencer has been trying to lower certain ratings (like rebounding) via the draft. Do you agree with this method and if not, how would you do it?
chipper : Honestly? It makes sense because- if you look at the time period the league is currently in compared to real life- that's when rebounding and the bigs slowly started to deemphasize a bit. Obviously you had guys like Shaq and what not come in the league in the 90s- but it at least makes sense in my brain since rebounding is OP in FBB.
11. Give us your absolutely early BBS finals matchup for this season.
chipper : Well shit now I have to actually REALLY go look. Let's see- well the Grizzlies have one of my favourites in Roy Tarpley (RIP), but the Mavericks have 'Nique and Spud- two of my all-time favourites. So let's go- Mavericks-Magic because 'Nique-Magic would be fun.
12. Who are your top 5 players in BBS history?
chipper : Apologies for being out of the loop the last few seasons so I'll just say some of my favorites that I remember- Deveraux St. Cloud, Magic (4 MVPs is crazy), Oscar, Russell, Wilt. I've left out a host of players but that's what you get.
