Thank you to DeeperThanSims nybombers3 Galo for getting this done rather quickly!
1. What was your plan going into this off season, and are you happy with where you stand before the first sim?
DBW: My plan was to finally blow it up after 12 or so seasons of being competitive. I'm very happy with how things turned out. I have an elite prospect in Scottie Pippen, a long time starter type in Rodman and a project that I hope can turn into something good in Ken Norman. I also have a few extra 1sts to play with, no bad contracts... great start to my rebuild.
NYB: Can't say I had a legit plan aside from get under the HC. I really didn't want to rebuild I know that. As is, I'm fine where we are. Pretty much the same roster as last year so we should still be good thie year. Not saying finals but yeah. Should at the least reset.
Galo: My plan was to try to bring back what we had and find a stop gap at PG. Not entirely happy where we are but we'll see what adjustments we can make via trade possibly.
2. What was the best trade of the off season? Could be for one individual team, or a trade where both parties benefited.
DBW: My trade with Kobe was the best and mutually beneficial. Moses, Mychal Thompson, Pippen and Rodman in the same deal is a major blockbuster. I really liked the Wolves getting Ehlo and the Heat getting Purvis as well.
NYB: Best trade would be Ralph Sampson to the Jazz. I'm not a huge Sabonis fan and not confident he'll be great. Feel like the Jazz made out big time there. They need to add Sikma and that will hurt but having that frontcourt is going to be worth it overall
Galo: Hawks easily landing Scottie Pippen and Dennis Rodman in the same deal plus a future for Moses and Thompson. DBW ate off the fact kobe was in CY but most people could foresee that move for a while now.
3. What was the worst trade or biggest head scratcher in your opinion?
DBW: I didn't understand why the Wolves traded for Cheeks to play SG but they just remedied that by getting Cliff Robinson, so all good. Hate that the Lakers had to trade Ralph Sampson. I just think they didn't need to be in that salary situation at all. I would have flipped Joe Bryant to the Nuggets/Braz as soon as I saw the post about his offer.
NYB: The Spurs whole offseason honestly. That Johnson deal has been spoken about everywhere so whatever. Taking on Cheeks now. They are still likely going to need more moves to reset, which I assume is the plan. As is, idk. They have a very rough situation and it's very much self-inflicted
Galo: The Marques Johnson and Doc Rivers contracts for sure. Not sure if Matt knows how 2nd maxes work - maybe that's an oversight. Also, would give Rex a pass since he just joined back and maybe didn't realize Doc is an average PG at best? MRR got paid as well but at least he's been elite for a long time and a cheat code at PG.
4. Best under the radar FA signing?
DBW: Loved Kobe's signing of Edgar Jones. Day 1 is always the best time to steal a player like that because most GMs with cap are so focused on the big names.
Edgar is an 11 reb/3 block big and that's becoming increasingly hard to secure. I also really liked the Kings signing Kevin McHale. I think McHale has been underused/misused his whole career. He has elite strength, inside, jumpshot and averaged 2 blocks in 24 minutes. He's a great starter.
NYB: Lawrence Boston to Indy. I don't think he's great but an A rebounder is always a good thing to have. He looks like he can be a solid 3rd/4th big and for that price, I think it's a pretty damn good pick up.
Galo: Knicks landing both both in Truck Robinson and Jamaal Wilkes on 1 year maxes
5. Give me your top 3 teams in each conference that you feel have championship chances.
DBW: In the East I have the Heat, Pacers and Magic. All 3 have deep lineups. Tough to count out the Bucks as they made the finals last year but I think they are 4th. In the West, past the Grizzlies and Mavericks, I have no clue. Probably the Warriors or Jazz.
NYB: East: Pacers, Magic, Heat
West: Grizz, Jazz, Mavs
Galo: East
Bucks
Knicks
Pacers
West
Mavs
Jazz
Grizz
6. What about a team in each conference that you think might surprise some people this year?
DBW: Greeme posted a comment about how he'll end up making the finals over the juggernaut East teams and we've seen it happen before. I'll go with the Nets out East. In the West, I guess the Wolves? IT and Ehlo in the backcourt with Jones and Robinson up front is pretty solid.
NYB: East: Wizards. If Lums can make some moves, they can easily be a top team in the East.
West: Nuggets. Braz doesn't like losing and he has assets plus talent already on roster. I think they'll start off well and make moves to reset.
Galo: Blazers in the West and Cavs in the East
7. Best pick in the previous draft outside the top 10?
DBW: I hope it's Ken Norman, I had him around 8 on my draft list. Could be Armen Gilliam or Sergei Bazarevich.
NYB: Armen Gilliam seems the obvious guy here, no? Looks like he had a really nice TC. To lazy to look up his preseason but it's clear he came in with solid potential. I wish I had said Anthony Mason but he's where he likely won't be camped at all. Sad times.
Galo: Probably Kenny Smith. Apparently, no one watches Inside the NBA smdh. I also like Anthony Mason in Portland
8. Any player you're shooting for in the near future? Could be a guy you're tanking for, or an upcoming FA you plan on targeting.
DBW: I really really want Gary Payton but we might still be 3 seasons out from him. I hope Micheal Jordan tests FA and I steal him. I will try to recreate the Bulls if I do.
NYB: John Starks. One of my favorite Knicks ever. I need John Starks on my roster. I'll tear this whole shit down as long as I can have Starks here. Then again, that didn't go well when I wanted Ewing so whatever.
Galo: GP - Gary Payton
9. Any move in the past you regret doing?
DBW: My most recent regret is the deal I did with the Pistons where I traded Bingo and Elmore Smith for little value. I was in a bind salary and time wise and couldn't get anything else done, but I was going to take David Thompson and flip him. The exact deal escapes me now, I'd have to go through PMs, but the GM basically got cold feet after people shit on Thompson in the trade thread lol... My all time BBS regret is trading Mack Drexel. I probably would have won a title much sooner if I just kept that Victor-Cade-Drexel team together.
NYB: So many. One I recall was trading Slick Lenoard for whatever that SF/SG I traded him for was. That dude never really played up to what he was doing while Slick was going off. Yes, I had a star PG already and I didn't really have another 3rd star available at the time but that one was annoying.
Galo: There's a couple - let's not bring up the past!
10. Do you think Diddy is guilty? (If you've been following the Cassie allegations lol)
DBW: That lawsuit was just too wild. I have to think some things were exaggerated, but he probably did do a good amount of that shit. Smh.
NYB: I'll answer that with a gif.
Galo: Ya Diddy is a freak. I think he's bi - heard the rumors of crazy orgy/sex parties and shit. Same shit with Will Smith. The only reason Cassie is coming out now is because the statue of limitations is ending soon in NY.
