BBS20 Top 40 Retro Players (Part 1)
We’re now 20 years into the retro era from fake players with the first retro draft being in 2029. This list attempts to capture the best of the best we’ve seen in the last 40 seasons. We’ll start from the honorable mentions then from #40-21 then from #20 to #1. Let’s start with Part 1…
Rank Tier Player Name
#21 2 SF Oscar Schmidt – Active
Analysis – The Brazilian stud scorer checks in here at No. 21 and why not? He averaged over 36 points a game last season for the Raptors and still coming into his prime years at only 29 years old. With a career average just short of 30 a game, Schmidt should finish up as an all time great if he can get a couple titles under his belt.
#22 2 PG Bo Lamar – Active
Analysis – One of Styro’s most prolific players is Bo Lamar. He spent over 8 seasons in Indiana before spending his later years in Tornoto and now in Phoenix. Lamar won his first MVP in 2061 followed by a number of great seasons where he was one of the top scorer and assist guards in the league. Not bad for the former #19 pick in the 2055 draft by Indy.
#23 2 PF Dan Roundfield – Active
Analysis – Roundfield was the #2 pick in the 2057 draft by the Rockets. It took him a few seasons but quickly became one of the top defensive bigs in the league with back to back defensive player of the league award in 2066 and 2067. Highly regarded at his peak – he’s not won any championships to date similar to Lamar and Schmidt but Royal’s Raptors is hoping to break that streak soon.
#24 2 PG Bobby Wanzer – Retired
Analysis - This one hurts to type since I passed on Wanzer for some dude named Odie Spears. Wanzer ended up becoming a cornerstone of Von ’s great teams during his retro run with New Orleans. And, although he hated the pick at the time, he loved it later when Wanzer was the league MVP.
#25 2 PG Guy Rodgers – Retired
Analysis – During the 2040 draft, play ended up hating the No. 3 pick which ended up being Rodgerse which formed a powerful tandem along with Hal Greer for those mid-retro Bulls team. Rodgers became a dominant scorer with scorching percentages and low turnovers to boot.
#26 2 SG Sam Jones – Retired
Analysis – I always fondly remember Sam Jones from those Sam I Am DCs that Ahsan used to run. A great stock monster at the wing spot – Jones was a very popular player during his tenure in BBS. One of the more unique guards to come out for sure.
#27 2 C Rudy LaRusso – Retired
Analysis – “Roughhouse Rudy” comes to mind when talking about the great defensive bigs that BBS has seen. Nanz and several others were able to reap the benefits of the big man anchoring some great frontcourt defense.
#28 2 C Harry Gallatin – Retired
Analysis – Harry ‘The Horse’ Gallatin had a stellar career where he also enjoyed a high level of value due to his ability to block shots and rebound down low. Andy called him an underrated big back in March 2022. He certainly became a key big on anyone’s lineup during those early AARP days.
#29 2 C Maurice Stokes – Retired
Analysis – Another elite big which make a string of three in a row. Stokes dominated the paint as one of the best rebounders of all time while also averaging nearly 6 stocks a game at his peak. He was truly a force for many of those elite teams in Chicago and Orlando.
#30 2 C Truck Robinson – Active
Analysis – Truck has slowed down a bit since his peak days but still kicking at 36 years old currently with the Knicks and with 3 championships to his name. He’s also made 2 All-League teams and 2 All-Defensive teams. Most impressive? A career 3.2 bpg to go with almost 14.4 points and 12.0 rebound career averages.
