Red’s PEF 03 season Review
Well the 4th season has pasted, and the Kings avenged the loss in the finals from the season before. Somehow the Knicks made it back after losing two key players to retirement. 3 GMs were terminated for not having a winning season or landing in the playoffs.
This review has more than the normal amount of players in it than previously, but here we go.
At Center for season # 4 Wallace was the King… and ironically enough was a King and still is. Rounding out the top 5 was Zo, Yao, Shaq and surprisingly to this writer JO. What was really surprising for me, is even as atrocious a FT shooter Shaq is, he was only one of the two Centers to avg > 1 on both PpS and BihP
PF had the best 2 players in the league and once again it was Duncan by leaps and bounds over everyone and then Garnet with the second highest score in the league. Rounding out the top five PF was Randolph, Camby and Webber.
Onto the Wings, and again, the SF are on average the second lowest RPEF group on avg to only the PG, as PG’s average more TO’s and aren’t rewarded for assists. Dirk takes top honors, and Glen, TMac, Manu, and Walker from the Celtics rounded out the top 5.
Onward we go to the Shooting guard, and AI’s rule of the roost after playing second fiddle to MJ for 2 years was short lived as Kobe finally started playing like the Kobe everyone expected when he was selected first overall in the creation draft. AI again moved to the bridesmaid suite being the number tow for three of the four years the league has been around.
Last we come to the generals that run the show, where Arenas and his shoot and score ability punched his ticket as the best PG in the game. Rounding out the top 5 was Billups, Nash, Kidd and Crawford. Honorable mention goes to Bibby for having the best PpS avg of all PG and 3rd in BihP.
Sorry for how late this article is, but life is way busier than it was even a month ago. Work has been kicking my buttocks, and with only having the daughter on weekends during the summer, it’s all about her.
In closing, I bring you another beautiful picture of my brown eyed girl.
Peace!
Points per shot is just that, total points from FGs and 3pointers divided by FGA. Ball in players hand is the same but it also looks at FT’s too, basically it comes down to, every time a person tries to score, this is their average per attempt. The guys that have the highest BihP are the guys you want to have the ball in one position game with time running out. I looked at the PER formula by John Hollinger, and realized while I would not mind programming it, doing it in excel would blow chunks. So I looked at combining a basic version of his idea with the outdated ( (ppg+R+A+B+S-TO) to come up with a rating that not only rewarded a good EFT, but also penalized people from missing fee points. I’m sure Shaq hates this formula that I developed. While it really hurt his points portion of the formula, his nonstop rebounding and the best assist per game rate of any of the Centers has him as one of the best Centers in the game. Now to validate the formula I looked at historical data of some of the best players to ever play the game and then further tweaked the formula to reward steals a tad more than blocks as a block doesn’t automatically cause a turnover. At no point was the PEF copied or tweaked, just a few ideas about what he has done. That said assists are going even more down in value that they have now.
