Lottery Pick Player Performance Review
1. Memphis Grizzlies: C Dwight Howard
Ratings Prior to Training Camp: B- D+ D+ C+ B- A
Current Ratings: B D+ D+ B B+ A
Statline: Dwight Howard C 24 27.3 9.8 10.5 1.8 0.9 2.4 1.8 .379 .636 .000
The first overall pick looks the part right now with his ratings and raw stats. That's the thing, though - he's super raw offensively right now. On the defensive end, he's ready to anchor defenses already, showing an impressive 3.3 stocks per game, despite only 1.8 turnovers a game. He can rebound at a solid rate, but again, his offense needs a lot of work. A field goal percentage of 38% leaves a lot to be desired, especially for a big man. He's already camped out, so whatever improvements he makes will have to be done through training camp. That should not be a problem considering his potential is probably 100 or near 100.
2. Cleveland Cavaliers (from Hawks): SG Andre Igoudala
Ratings Prior to Training Camp: B- C C+ B C A
Current Ratings: B B- C+ A- C A
Statline: Andre Iguodala SG 36 29.4 10.3 4.4 3.4 1.2 0.5 1.7 .407 .573 .318
Another guy is extremely raw on the offensive end. Iggy does not appear to have severe turnover issues, but the man struggles to put the ball in the hoop at an efficient rate right now. The Cleveland Cavaliers certainly sold high on "Iggy" after the draft, trading him and a future pick to the Toronto Raptors for Tony Parker (who was soon flipped for Dirk Nowitziki. Nice ROI!). Anyways, there is some stuff to like about Iggy, like his defense and rebounding on the wing. The good news? He has +10 left in ACs that can be used to pump into his scoring. The bad news? Game doesn't write articles.
3. Denver Nuggets (From Bulls): C Al Jefferson
Ratings Prior to Training Camp: B- C- D+ C+ C+ A
Current Ratings: B C- D+ C+ B- A
Statline: Al Jefferson C 34 26.4 12.1 8.8 1.1 0.7 1.4 1.1 .421 .699 .000
This pick was a shocker to some at the draft with the Denver Nuggets trading Carmelo Anthony to the Chicago Bulls in exchange for this pick. Oh yah, Josh Smith was still on the board as well. Al Jefferson actually is performing pretty well and looks like a solid pick here by Royal and the Nuggets. He can rebound and score, but needs improvement on the boards. Luckily, he's completely uncamped. I'm wiling to bet that the Nuggets are waiting to camp him until later in the season. Nothing stops the tank!
4. Detroit Pistons: PF Josh Smith
Ratings Prior to Training Camp: B- C+ C B- C+ A
Current Ratings: B C+ C B C+ A
Statline: Josh Smith PF 19 6'10'' 228 B C+ C B C+ A
Josh Smith was just the main piece in the Tim Duncan trade with the Indiana Pacers. Not much has changed rating wise for Josh Smith since training camp and he has been +21'd. His offense is extremely raw, which is certainly a trend thus far in the draft. However, Josh expects to be a defensive force on the wing with elite stocks. His offense will have to improve mostly though training camps. (FINGERS CROSSED)
5. Golden State Warriors: SG Kevin Martin
Ratings Prior to Training Camp: C+ B D+ D+ D+ B
Current Ratings: C+ A- C- C- C- B
Statline: Kevin Martin SG 27 31.7 18.9 3.7 2.1 1.2 0.1 1.1 .483 .889 .470
Ok, I was wrong about Martin. During the draft, I thought he'd suck. He can score with the best of them and currently has +21 left in the tank for camps to improve the rest of his game. He does not turn the ball over and shoots the ball at an impressive clip of .483 .889 .470. Wow! This turned out to be a great pick by the Golden State Warriors.
6. Utah Jazz: C Emeka Okafor
Ratings Prior to Training Camp: C+ D+ D+ C+ B- A
Current Ratings: C+ D+ D B- B- A
Statline: Emeka Okafor PF 32 26.9 8.9 8.3 1.4 0.3 2.1 1.2 .480 .711 .000
Okafor has not changed much since training camp, but I think that was expected. No one really expected Okafor to have elite potential and he was thought to be more of a finished product. Under the hood, Okafor possess great shot blocking ability. He can rebound decently and doesn't turn it over. His FG % is juicy at 48% as well. This was the first of many great picks by JR and the Utah Jazz.
7. Dallas Mavericks: SF Luol Deng
Ratings Prior to Training Camp: B- C+ C- C+ C A
Current Ratings: B- B C C+ C B
Statline: Luol Deng SF 32 33.6 18.6 6.2 1.8 1.3 0.5 1.1 .453 .819 .479
Deng is interesting. He's probably the best best scorer thus far in the draft behind only Kevin Martin. Defensively, he's raw. He rarely turns it over, which is a big plus, but the real question will be how much potential does he have left. His scouted potential dropped from A to B (disclaimer: not sure it means anything). He has +5 left which should get him to B B scoring as a rookie. Impressive.
8. New York Knicks (from Wolves): PG Shaun Livingston
Ratings Prior to Training Camp: C+ C C+ B C- B
Current Ratings: C+ C B- A- C A
Statline: Shaun Livingston PG 27 35.8 11.7 5.8 5.8 1.7 0.4 2.8 .447 .852 .167
Livingston is another interesting prospect. And yes, he's a former Warrior in real life. But wait! He's a Warrior here now as well after the New York Knicks dealt him to the Warriors. Livingston and Kevin Martin is an interesting back court combination that should work well together. I'm not a fan of guards who can't shoot, but I'm hopeful that Livingston can at least be servicible from mid range. The rest of his game is NICE.
9.Detroit Pistons (from Sonics): PG Devin Harris
Ratings Prior to Training Camp: C B- B- B- D+ B
Current Ratings: C+ B B- B+ C- B
Statline: Devin Harris PG 26 34.3 16.8 4.5 6.8 1.5 0.2 2.9 .444 .863 .351
Harris is very very good. His turnovers may need a little work, but they aren't miserable and that may be fixed with another training camp. All he really needs to do is pass the rock to Tim Duncan in the post and hit an open jumper, which he's doing decently. His potential is not likely through the roof, but he'll be a very decent player in this league.
10. Dallas Mavericks (from Bucks): SF Trevor Ariza
Ratings Prior to Training Camp: C B D+ B C B
Current Ratings: C A- D+ B+ C+ B
21.4 4.6 4.4 0.7 0.8 0.2 0.6 .417 .806 .270
Trevor Ariza was recently traded from the Mavericks to the Pacers for Ron Artest. Ariza looks hot right now with those ratings. The volume isn't there, but it'll come shortly. He still has +15 left, all of which will likely go to his scoring. Ariza and Josh Smith should form to be a terror on the wing for opposing teams with their length, rebounding, and versatility. His offense is raw and he is currently in a tanking DC so I wouldn't put too much into his stats. The sky is the limit for this guy going forward!
11. Utah Jazz (from Magic): SG JR Smith
Ratings Prior to Training Camp: C+ B+ C- C C- A
Current Ratings: B- A- C- C C- B
Statline: J.R. Smith SG 32 20.6 12.2 3.5 1.8 0.5 0.1 1.0 .473 .857 .450
JR hit a hit a homerun with this pick of JR. HUE. JR Smith still has +10 left which should get him close to B- A scoring as a rookie. Sure, he'll never be a defender, but with LeBron on the wing next to him, you can afford his lack of defense. He's going to be a very good scorer in this league for years to come. He won't do much else, but he'll shoot efficiently.
12. Washington Wizards: SG Ben Gordon
Ratings Prior to Training Camp: C B+ C C D+ A
Current Ratings: C A- C C+ D+ B
Statline: Ben Gordon SG 26 34.3 17.1 4.6 2.5 1.6 0.1 2.1 .424 .806 .438
The Wiz would deal Gordon to the tanking Seattle Supersonics shortly after and Gordon has looked the part so far this season. He's shooting the ball very efficiently from 3. He, like JR Smith, will be great scorers, but shit defenders. Not much else you can expect from Ben Gordon.
13. Phoenix Suns (from Celtics): PG Jameer Nelson
Ratings Prior to Training Camp: C C+ B- B- D+ B
Current Ratings: C B- B- B- D+ B
Statline: Jameer Nelson PG 34 10.0 4.4 0.9 1.9 0.4 0.0 0.6 .478 .667 .452
Outstanding value here for the Suns with the Jameer Nelson pick. He looks like he won't have turnover issues and can score. Oh, he has +21 left as well. He's going to be a very very good player once the Suns camp this man out. I would not be shocked to see Nelson starting at PG next year for the Suns with Jason Williams being shipped elsewhere.
