Thought it would be fun to rank the top ten players of the first three draft classes. I didn't think it would be fun tbh. I thought it'd get me an AC. Here we go!
1. Gilbert Arenas PG 22 6'4'' 199 B+ A C C- D+ B
While Tony Parker is a superstar, Gil leads the way as BBS’ sole B+/A scoring point guard. (The closest anyone else gets: Jamal Crawford at B-/A.) Gil’s been around the world, to the top of the mountain, and back in his four seasons. He dropped to second due to uncertainty about his handling ability, but it’s proven to be no issue.
When people say "The Gilbert Man," they are talking about this man (presumably).
2. Tony Parker PG 22 6'3'' 194 B B C+ B+ D+ B
Parker surprised with a +2 outside shooting jump in his first TC, and while his ratings have stagnated, he’s been over 85 in inside scoring and midrange from day 1, and his production has skyrocketed. Wouldn't be surprised by another +2 outsideTC given his splits last season.
3. Zach Randolph C 23 6'10'' 261 B C+ C- B B+ B
Had an ugly TC, but he’s the most efficient big man in the league, better than expected on defense, and a very good rebounder. Works at either forward position.
4. Tyson Chandler C 22 7'1'' 254 B+ D+ C- A- B- C
Climbs the rankings with an excellent TC that apparently included a big jump in shotblocking. Rebounds are fine despite the B- rating, doesn’t turn it over much, and looks destined for 4+ stocks and elite defense.
5. Joe Johnson SG 23 6'7'' 240 B A- B- C+ C- C
Joe doesn’t give you much on defense and on the glass, but he’s one of the best scoring wings. Career 25 PPG on 47/82/42 and he has very good handles.
6. Eddie Griffin PF 23 6'11'' 234 C+ C C- A- B C
The class’s best shotblocker, Eddie’s a high equity big who doesn’t turn it over. Solid rebounder, too, and he had a season where he played 39 MPG—incredibly valuable in a league full of bigs stuck in the 28 MPG range. I probably should've put him ahead of Tyson!
7. Richard Jefferson SF 24 6'7'' 238 B A- D B C+ C
Not a viable option scorer, but RJ is an otherwise good wing. Good steals and rebounds, efficient shooting, and elite handles. Just a complementary piece, though.
8. Mehmet Okur C 25 6'11'' 260 B B C- B- B+ C
Not many good scoring bigs out there, but Memo’s a fine one. Did 20 PPG on 49/82/45 and 1.4 TPG last year. That’s special, though it’s also not what he’s doing this year. Memo’s a good rebounder but probably shouldn’t start in the frontcourt.
9. Eddy Curry C 22 7'0'' 296 B+ C- D+ B C+ B
I thought Eddy would bust and told Dan not to trade up for him—I was wrong. He came in with sky-high inside scoring and has become a viable defender increasingly capable of playing starter’s minutes. The C+ rebounding remains a major question mark.
10. Gerald Wallace PF 22 6'9'' 229 A- C C+ A- B+ B
He depresses me. I thought he’d be a superstar when he entered the league and tried hard to draft him. Sure enough, his ratings have exploded. The only problem is that he sims like shit. He’ll be good for elite rebounds and stocks, but I’m not sure you can effectively minimize his offense, and boy would you need to. 43/68/25 shooting splits with 2.6 turnovers per game. He’s here on projection and fondness. Loved The Gerry Man
.
1. Dimitris Diamantidis SG 24 6'5'' 204 B+ A C+ C C C
DD was underrated for a minute after a quiet sophomore season, but he’s in that Kobe/H20/Luol Deng tier of scorers. The ’02 class was weak; this man is not.
2. Yao Ming C 24 7'6'' 313 B C D+ B+ B+ A
Full disclosure: I’m offering for this guy. I am behaving disgustingly in Stevie B’s PMs, and now I’m gonna piss him off. Yao is a dud! His offense is somewhere between good and very good, but he’s capped at 20 PPG. His rebounding and defense are good but not elite. Do the Sixers need to go balanced and make Yao, Dejan, and Francis their options? Absolutely. Should they deal Webber and Jamison for picks and retool on the fly? Immediately! Maybe that unleashes Yao. Who knows?
3. Udonis Haslem C 24 6'8'' 242 B+ C C- A- B+ C
He’s better than Yao right now. Started super developed and has continued to improve. So much to like here: 17/11 on 49/86 with 1 turnover per game. Why!
4. Arvydas Macijauskas SG 24 6'4'' 221 B- A C C+ D+ C
He averages 27 on 51/85/51. You can absolutely ignore his three turnovers given his production. But D+ rebounding sinks my dong in the sand where no one will ever find it (I bought a Tile but forgot to put it on). Honestly, I was tempted to rank him lower, but nobody below him is anywhere near as good at anything as he is at scoring.
5. Tayshaun Prince SF 24 6'9'' 220 C+ A- C A- C C
Ratings are average, but career 45/85/42 with excellent handles and 2+ stocks in tanking DCs. Nice fourth starter.
6. Amar'e Stoudemire C 22 6'11'' 248 A- C- C- B B B
He’s capable of high volume and his ratings keep improving. Also good for 1.5 BPG, 1 SPG. But he’s inefficient and only an average rebounder. Camped out, too. He could become really nice if the blocks and rebounds continue to improve, but I’m not a fan of his offense at all.
7. Nenad Krstic C 21 7'1'' 246 B- C- D+ B+ B- A
He had great notes and seems to be exploding after a few dormant seasons. B-/B+/B- with A potential, 2:1 on stocks, and nice midrange. Two ACs left, both of which could go to rebounding and get him to starter quality before potential does the rest. Sorta prefer him to Amar’e since he won’t shoot.
8. Caron Butler SG 24 6'7'' 234 B B+ B B C B
Volume scoring wing with so-so shooting splits. Offsets his turnovers with high steals. Fine rebounder and defender. Way too many good wings to value one who isn’t elite at anything, though.
9. Kareem Rush SF 24 6'6'' 215 C+ A D+ B+ C- C
Rush is a beautiful three-point shooter with good handles and defense. C- rebounding probably means he's a backup, but he had high potential and may not be done improving. Nothing special, but neither is anyone below him.
10. Milos Vujanic PG 24 6'3'' 191 C+ A C C+ D+ C
Milos is a great shooter with moderately bad handling, defense, and rebounding. He's passable as a starter.
1. Dwyane Wade PG 22 6'4'' 213 B+ C+ C+ A- C+ A
Here we have the best player in the 2003 draft, and his coach, a messy bitch who lives for drama. Over 85 in inside scoring and midrange, shutdown defender, and will average 25+ pts on 48/85/? With 7+ rebounds with sub-3 turnovers at PG. Still has an AC left, too.
2. LeBron James SF 20 6'10'' 233 A- B+ B- C+ B- A
Not gonna go over well but so be it! LeBron won the dunk contest as a rookie, so that A- inside rating has plenty of jumping to it. He turns it over too much to play PG and is averaging just 22 PPG as a top option. His only edge on Wade seems to be his three point shooting, which is a big edge, but he’s only taking four per game, and FBB isn’t gonna take him much higher than that. Wade’s an A- defender to Bron’s C+, too. Could LeBron end up better than Wade? Easily.
3. Chris Bosh PF 20 7'1'' 241 A- C C- B+ B A
Incredible prospect. 11 RPG, 3+ stocks, just 1.3 turnovers per game on high volume. 46/70 shooting as a 20 year old is very promising, too. Had a massive TC and kept A potential. Two ACs to go. Could have a reign as the most valuable player in the league.
4. David West C 24 6'9'' 253 B- C C A B+ B
Huh. West exploded to A defense in TC and is the best rebounder in the class (though Wade's the best if you factor in position). 2.8 stocks and 1 turnover per game. Two ACs to go to turn him into a Camby type. So good.
5. Chris Kaman C 22 7'0'' 268 B C- D+ B- B C
3.3 stocks to 1 turnover and 10.5 RPG at 22. Still has an RC. These kinds of guys carry the day in BBS right now—it’s why DRob and Big Ben have two rings apiece. Kaman’s not them, but good luck finding elite blocks and rebounds from a 22 year-old. Add in great handles and competent scoring and you’re most of the way to a franchise player.
6. Carmelo Anthony SF 20 6'8'' 235 B B+ C+ C- C+ A
I love Melo. Great rebounder, huge volume, probably a top five jump shot, still has A scouted. No way to rank him over the bigs given the depth at their respective positions. Melo could be a special wing scorer, but he’s not there yet, and he’ll have a lot of company once he gets there. Kaman and West have skills almost no other young guys have.
7. Josh Howard SF 24 6'7'' 216 B A- C B C+ B
Nice two-way wing who can rebound and handle. ACs his jump shot and threes and he’s probably good enough to be your leading wing.
8. Jose Calderon PG 23 6'3'' 200 C+ A- C+ C D+ B
Weak rebounding and handling but three ACs (shooting and handling) could take him to Nash-level offense. No idea what Kobe’s doing starting Atkins over him.
9. Kirk Hinrich PG 23 6'4'' 195 C B+ B- B D+ B
Off in the wilderness as a backing PG on a tanking team, Kirk appears to be very good. More stocks than turnovers and B+ shooting with one RC and two ACs left. Solid starter; potentially more.
10. Paccelis Morlende PG 23 6'2'' 191 C C B- B C B
I thought he’d be amazing after his first preseason, but he’s just a collection of fun skills. Low turnovers, high stocks, above average rebounds, but he provides zero offense at an anchor position—talk about opportunity cost!
2001
1. Gilbert Arenas PG 22 6'4'' 199 B+ A C C- D+ B
