2005 BBS DRAFT - The Lottery Review
The draft has come and GONE. In the blink of an eye. Some GMs slept through the entire draft. Anyways, let's take a look at how things went down in the lottery...
1- Seattle Super Sonics- Chris Paul PG 19 6'1'' 175 B C B B C A
The Sonics rebuild starts off with an absolute BANG *Mike Breen voice*. The Sonics are the lucky team to out tank the entire league and win the BBS lottery, getting the chance to bring home a potential franchise changing point guard in Chris Paul. Has does it all, he can score, handle the rock, play defense and can rebound nicely for a guard. The outside shot may need some work, but should get there no problem. The Sonics really gutted their entire roster throughout last season and now have a guy to rebuild around. I'm not so sure that the tank stops here for Mark and the Sonics though. We shall see.
Grade - A
The Grizzlies won the lottery last season and picked Dwight Howard. This season, they find themselves receiving a nice consolation prize to the #1 pick. Deron Williams is clearly the 2nd best player in this draft and will form a hell of a 1-2 punch with Dwight. The Grizz will likely wait until training camp to pump all of the camps in Deron, which I think is smart. They need to see how his handles will look. The Grizzlies also went out and brought back Zydrunas Ilgauskas so they have the makings of a team on the up. I don't anticipate them rebuilding/tanking anymore and expect them to add pieces around their 3 key players. Contention is around the corner for the Grizzlies and I'm excited to see it!
Grade - A
3- Boston Celtics- Andrew Bogut C 7'0'' 260 21 C+ D C+ B B- A
I see no reason why Andrew Bogut can't be as good as, if not better than the guy we talked about above, Dwight Howard. Bogut will be a defensive/rebounding monster in this league. The Celtics also tore it all down this past season and now will have Bogut, a defensive anchor to build around. They'll certainly need Bogut there to protect the paint with the poor wing and guard defense they have on their roster. It would have been easy for someone to fall in love with 18 year old Andrew Bynum or Danny Granger, but really like this pick.
Grade - A
4- Atlanta Hawks- Andrew Bynum C 7'0'' 285 18 B- C- D+ C B- A
To me, it was OBVIOUS. Good pick here by the sleeping footy . Bynum has a solid base according to his notes. Given his ripe age of 18, he should retain most of his potential through his first training camp. It's probably important that the Atlanta Hawks pump camps into this guy sooner, rather than later. They have a bare roster, so really need Bynum to develop into a stud for this franchise to avoid a potential CY down the line.
Grade - A-
5- Golden State Warriors- Danny Granger SF 6'9'' 222 22 B- B- C- B- C B
I give up! The Warriors are in their CY so they probably should have dealt this pick for a win now piece (helllloooo Kevin Garnett). The time to pony up for a player like KG was now. It can still be done, but it's unlikely. Don't get me wrong, Danny Granger was the obvious pick here at #5, I just don't believe the CY Warriors should have picked at all. This pick should have been dealt for a win now piece as the roster is already littered with wings. It's not too late for the Warriors to get up and deal Danny Granger for an elite PG or BIG MAN. Let's do it man!
Grade - C
6- Chicago Bulls - Lou Williams SG 6'1'' 175 19 C+ B+ C C D+ A
Lou can score with the bets of them. He joins a team littered with wings as well as the team already features Carmelo Anthony, Matt Barnes, Larry Hughes, and newly acquired Arvydas Macijauskas. That is a lot of wings! While Lou was one of the best players on the board, I would have liked to see them pick a guy like David Lee or trade the pick (like they did last season for the aforementioned Carmelo). Regardless, Lou should be a nice player in this league for Play and the Bulls, or another team should they deal him.
Grade - B
7- Orlando Magic (from Nuggets)- DAVID LEE
8- Orlando Magic (from Nets)- MONTA ELLIS
9- Orlando Magic- AMIR JOHNSON
GOOD TRIO. I decided to bunch up all of the picks together here. David Lee reminds me a lot of Zach Randolph and can be that type of player for the Magic. If he can block a little, his role will be at PF If not, he'll be a juicy SF with that B rebound rating. Monta Ellis is a former Golden State Warrior so I'm sure he will be good here. His scoring is borderline C+ C which is scary, but he'll need camps as soon as possible. Amir Johnson - ah, fuck. I wanted him badly with the next pick. He's a defensive big who is only 18 and is borderline B- rebounds. With camps, he could be an interesting player going forward. Fuck @prat and the Orlando Magic. This guy hit a home run in this draft adding three very good players to his roster that features....just Al Jefferson. A young core of Jefferson, Lee, Ellis, and Amir Johnson should be very exciting. The thing is, Amar doesn't write article. Will these guys bust? He may have to sit down and hammer out 3 articles a season if we wants these guys to develop properly, otherwise, he may be better off just dealing them for win now pieces.
Grade - A+
10- Indiana Pacers- Fran Vazquez PF 6'10'' 240 22 C+ C D C+ C+ A
Yah, uh the draft fell off a bit after 9. Vasquez is a boom or bust type guy and you'll see that was clearly the Indiana Pacers draft motto this year. There are a lot of unknowns with Vasquez, but he could be something interesting. His C outside for a big is a plus as long as that 3 point shot is extremely low. Can he block? No idea. Can he rebound? Not sure? Can he score? Eh, we'll see. But the motto I have here is when in doubt, take a euro prospect!
Grade - C
11- Orlando Magic (from Bucks)- Marvin Williams SF 6'8'' 237 19 B- C+ D+ C+ C B
Ok, the Magic received an A+ for their earlier picks, but this one sucks. I don't like Marvin at all. Maybe he has the chance to develop into something, maybe not, but he looks rather BLAH. He does nothing real well here and seems like a JAG (just another guy!). At this point in the draft, go for the home run! I would have liked to see them go with Nate Robinson who was selected with the very next pick.
Grade C-
12- Utah Jazz- Nate Robinson PG 5'9'' 180 21 B- C+ C C+ C B
One could argue that JR has the best draft track record here. Obviously LeBron James, but he took Tayshaun Prince over Jay Williams and crew in 2002, then hit all home runs last year with Andris Biendrins, Emeka Okafor, JR Smith. Nate, a former Knick in real life looks like he could be something special. A lot will depend on what his handles will look like. We all know the scoring will be there, but if those handles are good, phew - the league better watch out for the Jazz. Adding Nate to the high powered squad that Utah already has in dangerous. At worst, he may be a microwave scorer off the bench for the Jazz, which isn't the worst thing.
Grade - B+
13- Indiana Pacers (from Rockets)- Charlie Villanueva PF 6'11'' 232 21 C+ C+ D+ C C+ A
Rough draft for the Pacers. They seemed to get sniped with every single pick and just missed out on much better players. Villanueva is a borderline B- B- scorer who will probably find himself as a small forward in the league. His rebounds are nice for the wing and if he has a bit of potential, he could become something special for the Indiana Pacers. He'll need to be camped as soon as possible and will need some luck to be a special player in this league. The former UCONN product finds a home with UCONN fan the original michael . Ah, shit draft for the Pacers. Meh.
